Yeah yikes. Quite ironic that the news broke right after I uploaded this video. Harvard wasn't among the schools listed and a very small number of students do get in through family connections and having their parents make large donations, etc, but I've never heard of coaches or admissions officers accepting bribes. That's on a whole other level, and as far as I know that hasn't happened here at Harvard but I'm sure it could happen. It's just heartbreaking because it's taking away spots from truly deserving, hardworking students :( I know if someone who bribed their way in had been accepted over me I would have been furious because I worked so, so hard in high school to get to where I am now.

According to The New York Times, the average family income of a student from Harvard is $168,800, and 67% of students come from the highest-earning 20% of American households. About 15% come from families in the top 1% of American wealth distribution. So yeah it is still very much an advantage if you’re rich

Smart people generally earn a good income because companies hire, pay and reward smart people - smart people generally have smart kids [about half of your intelligence is inherited] - so why would anyone be surprised that the smart kids of smart wealthy parents are over-represented at Harvard? Someone that wants to go to Harvard might be able to figure out that bit of sentential logic.

@@JamesJoyce12 I know a surgeon who is very rich and he failed high school he got where was according to him through connections so it has nothing to do with intelligence, schools can be bought, richer kids have parents that can give them every resource needed, but overall it’s money that matters.

It was very refreshing to hear that most Ivy League students don't look down on students at state schools and such. In Canada people can be really judgey about the university you go to. I have had friends that will only swipe right on guys or girls that go to the top 5 schools in Canada and no others lol

Don't apply if it's just about going to an IVY, look at the program and what the school offers. My son was told he would NEVER get into Cornell but he really connected with the ILR school, he applied, and is accepted

I think in most families ivy leagues are status requirement, and those families happen to be wealthy and hence the need to go to ivy leagues. It is also easier for those kids to go to prestigious schools because they are rich enough to not let the opportunity go. Most middle class kids get into ivy leagues but opt out because getting a student loan can be really burdensome. The rich kids have a better chance because their profiles are better - they can spend more on their hobbies, better schools, better chances of getting referred!

And to all these people simping for Ivy leagues, it’s undeniable that the average person who goes is pretty well off. Maybe not millionaire-level, but definitely upper-middle class. My brother's GI bill helped him pay for Cornell (he was a Marine). My family isn't rich. He told me about the Canadian Goose jacket thing and told me a lot of people wear Vineyard Vines too. My brother did poorly in high school, but he did a lot of leadership activities during and after the military. And he got good grades in the first college he went to after the Marines (he went to a significantly less competitive local college before he transferred to Cornell). His perseverance, discipline, and leadership activities helped him a lot.

I know it’s sort of personal I guess but what was your gpa. My highschool is unweighted so the highest you can get is a 4.0. I have a 3.9 so I would consider that good. And what a good sat score ?

I think the wealthy and rich assumption was meant as the students are Rich or someone wealth I mean like tuition and yes there’s financial aid but not every single person received crazy financial aid tuition and cost of Harvard is not affordable for everyone

HI SIENNA!!! I’ve been completely obsessed with your videos recently, as I really would love to go to Harvard and I adore your channel and you. I live in England, and it has always been a dream of mine to move to the US and go to university there, especially Harvard. I am so nervous about putting in an application though, as I heard the acceptance rates for students from the UK are low, and Harvard definitely isn’t easy to get into anyway!! If you could give me any advice or tips that would be great, i’d appreciate it so much.

I went to a top 50 state school for undergrad and now pursuing my grad at an ivy. I have to say there is a difference in terms of many rich people go to ivies. At least in my 5 years at my undergrad, I have never seen things I would constantly see now: someone(non-Asian) wearing 3-4 Cartier love bracelets on their arm(each about 5000 dollars) or wearing their alexander wang booties or other luxury goods to school. The way she portrays this is because she comes from the higher income bracket who lives in this bubble and has not experienced a different lifestyle. And I am not trying to diss anyone here, I very much agree with many messages commented below we need to beware of the privilege and state the truth.

Umay Tokatlıoğlu well I’m from Germany and all I found out about Ivy-League Colleges is that they are special Colleges, I think they are all in New England. It‘s a while but I think I read that they are better or more popular. Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

they actually do get robbed sometimes :/ it's mostly on the first floor, as people will leave laptops and wallets out and someone can climb in through any unlocked windows. our security is really good though and you need an ID to get into any dorm.

All the students in my family have only gone to ivies so I have this pressure where I can only go to one or else I’m gonna be the “that kid” who goes to a state colleges (nothing wrong with that but in my family that’s looked down on😔)

Go to a state school, an Ivy is just an overhyped college. You could get the same or an even better education at a state school
