Note that she trained for physical performance rather than chasing sone crazy aesthetic ideal. If you work to maximize strength, endurance, and mobility, your body will reflect it naturally. Anyway, good luck on your strength training.

I did gym for a year now , cut down over 30 kg. Training now mostly aesthetics, strength for myself.Endurance not so much , I did some CrossFit but now tapering that off as at my older age , cardio should be limited.

I would say weight/powerlifting and not bodybuilding. Her goals look to have been more strength than hypertrophy focused. If you look at tested powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting you can see a lot of these role models.

@@Shvabicu I'm not sure how true this is, but I've heard it's pretty simple and common to "cheat" drug tests for natural bodybuilding, so looking to modern natural bodybuilders is not always reliable. I like having an example of someone who was most assuredly not on anything. 99% of the old-timey lifters and bodybuilders I've seen examples of are men, so I don't have a solid idea of what's achievable naturally like men have. And yeah, she's not technically a "bodybuilder," so I shouldn't have used the term, but I was more referring to how refreshing it is as a woman to see another woman lifting and trying to be as strong - and maybe as built - as she could get and overcoming the obstacles she did. Her motivations aren't as important to me as her accomplishments in this case.

As a man I look at women bodybuilders for inspiration (both on drugs and off). I find their leg to lats to be more appealing than the monster chests and popcorn arms lol I know I’ll never look anything like them but if they train heavy, in a progressive overload fashion, and have been doing so longer than 5 years, I can learn something from them.

Weightlifters always did bicep curls to help prevention against torn biceps during heavy lifts like the deadlift. The biceps are as you know, the weakest link due to their size so strengthening the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the front of the arms are hugely important. Great video, thank you

I agree that his channel is good in comparison to the mainstream bodybuilding channels when it comes to information and video content. However, the claims that his channel is the best one or that he will get 1M subs in a year are very bold of you to make. My point is that spreading positivity although is good, it can sometimes be misleading for others. There are plenty of bodybuilding channels out there that you and many others haven't discovered yet that give great advice, so you shouldn't idolize anyone's work, or at least not immediately. His channel got a strong shot at gaining popularity amongst the masses due to his interesting perspective and a way of simplifying things, but if you are planning to really look deep into it, nuance and programming oriented channels is what you need. Plus believing that someone's content is the best is like saying that you shouldn't try to find other sources of info anymore since you already have the best of them all, which is very dangerous for your self-growth.

4:10 While bicep curls are not necessary in weightlifting, a lot of us still do them because having well developed arms is necessary for a strong lockout, basically makes the arms more solid overall. I'd imagine its even more important for a female lifter, although by the looks of her she definitely had at least some interest in bodybuilding

The bicep is not involved in a properly executed deadlift. Torn biceps from deadlifting invariably occur due to poor lifting form using the inverted grip. Of several weak links in the deadlift, the bicep isn't really one of them (hand/forearm grip certainly is)

Thank you so much for this video especially, and your others. It is very respectful to acknowledge the courage and determination of men and women who were pioneers in health and strength. Women like Ivy and Abbye Stockton are true feminists in my view. They are level headed and not asking for special concessions or parading around like victims. They just did what they knew intuitively was the healthier thing to do. My utmost respect to such women.

Great video, thanks! Ivy Russell was certainly a pioneer in the field of women’s physical activity, from her mid-teens being an instructor at a women’s gymnastics club then later specialising in weightlifting/wrestling, having dabbled with boxing & fencing along the way. That car-crash was a great tragedy, resulting in the death of the wife of the older married couple with whom she lived, and who to some extent she must have looked upon as a mother figure. The husband was Ivy’s instructor/coach and the death of his wife would been devastating for him too. In 1932 Ivy became famous for winning what was probably the first women's weight-lifting contest when she beat a contender from the North of England. A similar contest in 1937 gained much greater publicity, causing something of a sensation. Featured on BBC radio, Ivy found a wide field of opportunities opening up for her and decided to concentrate on forging a sporting career. But with the rise of the Nazis during this time, world events were not in her favour. The car accident happened in August 1939 and by the time the case came to court (the other driver was found guilty of Dangerous Driving) Britain had declared war on Germany and there would be six years of grinding hardship ahead. This had a huge effect on the country, which had very soon changed to a war-based economy with practically everything, particularly food, in short supply and strictly rationed. This, combined with the continued food rationing and slow economic recovery that went on for years after the war had ended, would have been very detrimental to any sporting career…

@@user-ly3li3ex8c funny you should ask, some of the guys were competing for state level championships, they had posters of themselves on the walls, powerlifting equipment, the works. The womans side, which I mentioned was on the 2nd floor, had very light barbells, a few mats, stationary bikes and about 5 or 6 of those machines that had a belt tied to it that shook when turned on, and the women would stand there and wrap the belts around their waistline and thighs. Also, the big guys downstairs would joke that if you were having trouble lifting up a certain weight that maybe you "belong upstairs with the wimmen".
