Well guys, i think this is not a truth to this date. Today, the Tatra 815 is more common as a vehicle of volunteer fire brigades (Usually 6x6 CAS 32 classic configuration with short cab), 148 is going to be a history soon... There were much more of them some years back... And they will only get rid of, because of their age... I know, that they are the best in terrain (In Hřensko, year ago, on one of the worst terrain road down there) the fire chief said, half of the road will be used by all other engines, on that really bad and damaged second half i can use only a Tatra 148.... Plus Classic THT body of Tatra 148 has 6000 litres of water, and 600 litres of foam.

When I was in military service on Airfield Mošnov then Czecho-Slovakia one guy took Tatra 815 8x8 for illegal trip around airport and in process panicked when tried to be stopped by patrol and went right through forrest putting down trees with 15 - 20 cm trunks with ease. He was stopped after some 20 - 30 meters only by tree roots overturned by falling tree which lifted truck front axle. Only damage was tyre damaged from dislocated cabin. Even guys from manufacturer located cca 15 km away were surprised with that performance.

@*UncleJoe* Personally, I am of the opinion that as far as such vehicles in the Czech Republic are concerned, the Tatra is slowly at the top in terms of terrain permeability. However, probably the most permeable car that the Czechs produced was the Praga V3S. Yes, that truck had a nice name back in the day, Praga, when our capital is Praha (Prague)😉 In the Czech Republic we make a truck with the name ExcaliburArmy, which is perhaps the most famous chassis in the world. 7:41 The legendary old Hungarian bus brand, the Ikarus (no, not Russian!). Used worldwide and because it was strong and easy to maintain, and there were places where normally only this bus could go e.g.: Greece serpentines etc. In Hungary and the surrounding countries, there are still later versions that work and are perhaps better known, but most of them are in museums or have been scrapped. By the way, there is a world-renowned restoration workshop here, where they repair them, no matter where they come from. They are usually brought back to Hungary by rich Germans, because the German mechanics do a bad job and lie on the job! They also built their own version based on the American Steiger Cougar II tractor, which was improved several times and fitted with engines tuned by the legendary Rába Hungarian Wagon and Machine Works. This was the Rába-Steiger, which was and is also used in other countries! The sound of the engine was extraordinary, wherever it went in the world, people remembered and loved it!

The Tatra engine does not meet the Euro 6 standard, therefore it does not use original engines for the civilian market. Air-cooled Tatra engines and cabs are used in army, firefighting and other special vehicles because they are very reliable.

The small green car was a Trabant. They smoke blue out of the exhaustion, 5 km after they left the factory. And they smelled horribly, when you passed them on the road. Officially, the Trabant has never overtaken another vehicle on the road. They were that slow! (Well I might have made up the last part, but it's probably true).

There was another truck made in Czechia: LIAZ. Perhaps not so cool as Tatra but also interesting. Here is a short video from the LIAZ owners gathering: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6qlg89kudnUYJ8.html

Tatra firetrucks become more and more popular in Germany, especially in the federal states with large forest areas. In the following video there is an out of German standard (two-tone) sirene, maybe because the fire department is very clse to the Czech border. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sM2BeK2Vz7ewf5s.html

Fun fact. The czech two-tone signal for firecars should remind to czechs the sound of word HOŘÍ (hoo-říí)...which in english means "its burning".😉

Love for Tatra is very understandable, I liked them the second I first saw one. Heavy trucks with all wheel drive are wonderful in general, but unfortunately also very obscure and you'd normally not know about them without deliberately looking them up. Soviet Union built a bunch of cool ones that I know about. Don't know much about US built ones, I know of the M939 and CCKW but not much else.

Hello, small correction - the Czech Republic (part of the former Czechoslovakia) was never part of the Soviet Union. Although it was part of the communist bloc (Eastern bloc), it was always a sovereign country, unfortunately occupied by the Soviet army since 1968.

CZECH MADE DEFENCE VEHICLES OF YEAR 2022: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMiYlLh61q-oXZc.html COMPANIES: .-TATRA DEFENCE VECLES, - EXCALIBUR ARMY (EA) - based on TATRA CHASSIS AND ENGINS, - ZETOR - huge surprise for me as ZETOR is mainly known as traditional long term tractor producer from Brno - but Brno city is known as traditional military equipment producer - amazing revival - cooperation of french NEXTER and TATRA (chasiss) - model TITUS

My daughter has a American hubby, works with American company. They moved back to Australia. 3 years ago.. hubby is in the big truck industry.. And he went. Wtf? How come America doesn't get these trucks? Answer. Simple. You're companies block anything better than American made.. The Pontiac GTO. Was available in all wheel drive. But GM America banned it.. Because it was better than the crap they were making..
