These videos will likely be even more helpful in the long run in comparison to Art of Smash 4, due to being released in the beginning of Ultimate's lifespan. Whenever someone needs help learning the game, this is the go-to video series, and I'm glad it's here as early as possible.

I could not believe how difficult it has been to find a clear and concise video explaining all of these advanced techniques that isn’t just 30 minutes of live rambling from someone’s twitch stream. Actual production value here with the light up button map. Question for you, in the controller settings, what sensitivity do you set your movement stick to? What do you suggest for newer players?
@HighLanderPonyYT
@HighLanderPonyYT 5 жыл бұрын
ZeRo said most pros set it to High and it has felt better than the other options so far.
@GeflGabe
@GeflGabe 5 жыл бұрын
Newer players should just start at high sensitivity, since there's objectively no reason to start at a lower sensitivity, given they won't be used to any previous games. Even then, it's a better choice to set it to high from the get-go.
@gbird.
@gbird. 5 жыл бұрын
High sensitivity, more precision
@totallycarbon2106
@totallycarbon2106 5 жыл бұрын
I was under the impression that high sensitivity made inputting smash attacks easier, and other strong attacks. But visa versa makes weak ones and tilts harder. Mostly not a problem if you have tilts on C stick, but if you play Palutena (or potentially others with moves similar to her side b) then it might be worth experimenting

Also, if you roll in any situation, you have a few frames of vulnerability before you're actually safe. So trying to roll out of blockstrings or rapid hits like Fox's drill, Ness' PK Fire, or Charizard/Bowser's fire breaths will cause you to take damage. Ultimate seems to focus more on shield pressure, sort of like Melee, but more emphasis on shields in general.

Thanks for this! I changed my controls. C-Stick to Tilt Attacks, Turned off Tap Jump, now I’m debating to change y from jump to tilts since x is jump. So I can use y for smash attacks. Just wish you could change a+b smash attacks to just be set to Y. Like damn that kind of sucks but might be close and good enough! Thanks! Can now beat much higher difficulty cpu! Hey Izaw, awesome guide. I just want to point a small technicality: in part 3 and part 5, you say to instant dash attack by pressing control stick and c-stick together left or right. From this I'd interpret that you can input them on the same frame and get an instant dash attack, which is simply not true. It's easy to test that if you do this input on exactly the same frame, you get a tilt. I guess you can get away with saying this because a movement input on the control usually register before a c-stick input; a slight tilt on the control stick inputs movement, but slight tilt on the c-stick doesn't input a tilt. However, if you very very quickly smash both control and c-stick, you will get tilts consistently. So if people are misled by this video thinking you can control stick and c-stick at the SAME TIME to instant dash attach, as they improve and their inputs get quicker, they'll start messing up instant-dash attacks more. So it's important to point out you need to hold left or right at least one frame before your c-stick input.
@WildTonyAppears
@WildTonyAppears 4 жыл бұрын
I'm only one minute into this video and already excited enough that I had to comment. Moving tilts to the c-stick is absolutely genius! I rarely utilise tilts just because I find it hard to have that kind of mastery of the control stick in pressure situations. Being able to access them more easily adds a crucial tool to my arsenal that I had neglected for too long, thank you so much!!

All this tech is cool but I REALLY don't understand the context in which to implement these options. Excited for the next video
@NISHIAKI
@NISHIAKI 5 жыл бұрын
The context generally applies to each character differently. For example, the Reverse Aerial Rush is almost essential tech for a Captain Falcon player, who can use that attack as an approach. Whereas a Lucas player may only use that as an edgeguard, since his back air is a spike and isn't as useful on the stage in a neutral position. Some techs, like most of the Shield techs, apply generally the same to all characters (though they may be more or less useful depending on the matchup). I would say picking a tech and spending a some time in matches trying to execute it successfully will give you a good idea of when it is and isn't appropriate/useful implement.

Speaking as a beginner watching this video, you should definitely move the part about controls to the FIRST video. I've been playing for a few weeks now and I've been racking my brain the whole time trying to figure out how expert players achieve the precise control needed to differentiate between tilt attacks and smash attacks using the standard controls. Now I get it. Of course they can do it because no one USES the standard controls!

I completely missed the part on Instant Dash Attack, and ended up discovering it myself while testing Dash Cancel. I found that the initial dash animation has a relatively wide window where the character is forced to finish his/her first step, unless you cancel with an Instant Dash Attack, or jump (other moves will wait for the end of the animation). I couldn't find a popular name for this, so for now I'll just call it a Step. For Young Link, there are 5 frames at the start of the Dash where you can Dash in the opposite direction (e.g. for Dash Dancing), 10 frames of Step where you can only Instant Dash Attack or jump (Link will have both legs above the ground), then after that the period sprint animation starts, where you can finally Turn Around, cancel with other moves or simply brake and stop (Fox Trot is about braking after the Step and starting a new Dash in the same direction). If you try a Dash Attack with the Attack button (A) during the Step, it will buffer until the sprint, so you have to wait 15 frames. If you press A too early (first 5 frames), it will trigger a Forward Smash (but this is useful when done on purpose to slightly reduce the distance to your opponent before a Smash; any Smash, by the way), which does not happen with the C-stick. Although it's called "Instant" you can wait as many frames as you want before pushing the C-stick forward (first 5 frames, 10 frame Step, or during the sprint animation as a substitute for A), giving you full control on the distance you want to cover before hitting. The Dash page on SSB Wiki doesn't have a lot of information on Ultimate yet. They started filling a table with the total number of frames of the initial dash animation, but if we find that characters have also different pre-Step windows (not only 5 frames like Young Link), it may be worth filling that too. Hm, what started as a KZfaq comment became a bit lengthy. I'll try to rewrite all of that in some place easier to find.

Another thing about crossups for people, If someone rolls or spotdodges you can run through them and punish, so dont rule that out as an option for someones panic option. Also since now you cant cross up just running into your opponents body for a split second can create real pressure much like in traditional fighters so use that as well!

Quick tip on C-Stick tilts that are multi-inputs cause you can't spam c stick (Snake's forward tilt has 2 hits on forward tilt that requires two tilt inputs to complete) If you use the c stick to run and immediately tilt attack, use the A button for the second or third hit like metaknight's f-tilt (maybe more if any characters have that)

11:59 it can and most likely will lead to nairs WITH momentum, as the window is inconsistent, as well as being prone to just getting a dash attack or the very tilt you input in the first place.

Interested in 2 things: 1. The tilt cancel 0 momentum nairs for run up retreating/spaced nairs as Ike. 2. Figuring out the best buffer for doing downthrow > pivot bair true combos.. This input is really strict normally and I feel like somewhere in the last 3min a shortcut is described but it's currently whooshing over me

Speaking of controls, I switched to a Pro layout recently, put attack on rb, spec on lb, grab on zl, and left shield on zr, and put jump on b. Omg. with both digital inputs and the extra button, the control I have now is amazing. everything is easier, and the ability to do situational complex tech is actually within my reach.

Knowing the range, active time and special rules of every opponents moves is critical. There is no point spending months learning this complex tech if you don't know that, for example, Byleth's Down B will break your shield in one hit, can change direction and has super armour. Play at least two hours ss every character in the game against the CPU to learn their moves and how to think like a player of that character - especially the DLC, who have some powerful moves that can destroy the unaware.

As someone who only ever owned Brawl and played for fun (like any normal 10 year old), this has been quite a lot to process. I'll definitely have to review, but all the info is here and I greatly appreciate your effort making this.
