I just love old anime films from the 80's and 90's, they just seem to have a magical vibe to them that can't be recreated again (or at least it's very difficult to recapture it's magic).

I agree, anime from the 70s-90s really have that feeling of life in them, compared to now where it is kinda dull and muted. Especially meta for anime now is just proft and ecchi

Old style graphic type, unique single scene animation (Chinook landing in 4:02), landscapes shots (mostly urban areas and from hight altitude) and music (i can't recognize the type. Old synthwave? Ambient? Dunno) - recipe for '70.-'90. anime magic. ;)

It’s because of the hand drawing and painting. A lot of care and love use to go into drawing anime back then. Also the colour palate use to be more neutral and natural, not the glossy pastel palate of current gen. And also Japanese economy was doing extremely well back then so studios didn’t hold back on quality and expense. For me “Macross Do You Remember Love” takes the cake for quality!

I really love the scene of the Type 90 being wheeled off the truckbed and the POV shot of it's gun pointing right at the Diet building. Really great and subtle way to show Oshii's hatred of the military industrial complex.

They didn't seem afraid to go through the 'show, don't tell' route, which couldn't have been coupled better with scenes like this one where the worldbuilding is unveiled through a slow-burn of a montage. The contrast created from the juxtaposition of the military in the midst of a dense urban city, with all the mundane details of every day life, really gives it a captivating quality. It reminds me of the montage from Ghost in The Shell, which is also just a timeless piece.

Not even arguable. Here artist understood the intricacies of the world on a level I can’t even begin to comprehend, it really is a dying art form full of 3d models that “look just as good”. Stg if I hear that again I’m gonna have an aneurysm. There is just so much more life to films like this, Akira, and Jin Roh.

This single scene is a way scarier than most of the thrillers. A ghost of probable civil war, tanks on the streets, emergency announcements on tv. A complete misunderstanding of what is truly happening. It reminds me of the 1993 Russian constitutional crisis.

One of the reasons that I like this anime so much is that it's not so futuristic at all compared with other similar animes that center around robots or power armors. You can see in the clip that they still use traditional TV screens, which are huge and heavy, instead of the HD flat screens that are so commonly used everywhere nowadays. The combination of reality and imagination is one of the features of this series. The more you watch this anime movie, the more you realize that the setting of the story is not the far future, but a modern world in which all of these technologies have been used for quite a while. I am looking forward to this kind of work but haven't found similar ones so far. It's a condensed, dark, and inspiring movie that people who are interested in Japanese culture or political environment should never miss.

I agree.... Patlabor was very much a "10 minutes into the Future" type of experience. The Team that made it wanted you to feel that this could very well be done with existing tech or cutting edge tech at the least. Patlabor the first movie had the characters using minidisc CD Roms in Computers at a time when that was happening in real life Japan but the West was only just phasing out floppy discs for conventional PC CD Roms.

Not only that, is the details. Notmally animes are just plain things. A tank? a couple of flat sirfaces and done, here you can see the fact that plates aret just flat, they have volume, shadows and other componentes. You can see it on the image of the tanks moving through the city on the highway, the shadows that public lights create on the surfaces of those tanks and the faces of the commander. Animes nowadays wouldnt doubt about making thos tanks plain, 0 shadows, bright colours,etc.

The looks of awe on the faces of the tankers as they roll by the offices gets me every time. "Is this really happening? Are we really doing this in our lifetime?" Edit because while I appreciate the clip being up I feel the title of the video is very misleading. While the scene shows a mobilization and the following garrison duty, it's hardly a coup d'etat in the plot. Maybe it's mistranslation, but the title ought to read "(JSDF Mobilization)" instead.

Well, for one, this was very expensive. Also, I think it has a lot to do with animation studios as well as artists moving away from the old-school cell animation techniques and equipment which are needed to make this kind of thing. Most cell animation didn't look all that great, and isn't missed. I think over time there will probably be more animation which simulates an older style similar to this one. I think there were also very few artists to begin with who were able to make cell animation look so damn good in the first place, and I'm guessing they're mostly retired now.

It's the cost paradox I'm afraid to say. Despite computer animation making it cheaper to animate shows (you can get this sort of quality on a computer animation set for a mere FRACTION of the cost), animation is STILL expensive and isn't guaranteed to draw in the crowds to justify the quality... and that isn't even mentioning the fact that the animation industry is in a similar position as the gaming industry and graphics. Only Disney was able to reconcile this because, well, they're Disney and have the Disney Empire at their backs (and are known innovators of the animation industry since pretty much Day 1 and still do one way or another to this day). There is a major risk with going for high quality than 'good enough'. Many GOOD cell-animation shows that are still remembered are thanks more to writing or merch than the quality of their animation.

Huh, while out of context this does look like a coup d'état, it's actually the government calling in JSDF units that hadn't been part of the units who had protested against the government actions. I realized once I saw how in the show it talks about all "loyal" units, and when you realize that other units had been protesting, it would be pretty clear what's happening here. A really cool scene nonetheless though.

For people who are confused as to why its called a coup, as said in 4:59, all provisions for martial law were dropped after WW2. While the JSDF reacted according to the whims of the civilian government - it did so clearly against the constitution. The civilian government basically gave a duplicate key to the JSDF with that one especially as just before this - the PATLABOR units (basically the police) had been condemned for their inaction during the Bay Bridge Bombing and the blame was pinned on them. This is why the SVD Units were hauling shit - they have been ordered to stand down while the forces who condemned them rolled in to take over their job. Who knows what will happen. Now why did the civilian government called in the JSDF? Well the US threatened to intervene if the government doesnt get a grip on things. This was exactly what the antagonist wanted, to basically have the JGSDF (who the antagonist doesnt have much influence on) to parade around in one area which he basically threatened with nerve gas the very next scene. The plan was for the JGSDF themselves to orchestrate a full coup fearing another attack - which would be the real thing next time. The antagonist, who is with the JASDF is going to take care of the SVD Units which he basically sent a gunship after to destroy them while the gas attack was going on.

while the constitution does not have any overt or subtle provisions for a state of martial law, the JSDF law allows the government to call upon the JSDF to deal with internal disturbances and defence in accordance to rulings made by Japan's supreme court. (It's difficult to find information about the JSDF law of 1954, the best that i can find is the one the library of congress, it seems that everyone knows what the law contains but couldn't cite the actual transcript except 'Act No. 165 of 1954' which does not exist online and probably requires contact with the japanese government to see one)

Translation from Title: The clip is from "Mobile Police PATLABOR 2 the Movie", after the Nerima garrison incident, the Chief of Staff of the Army, Navy and Air Force resigned, and the confrontation between the Police Department and the Self Defense Force escalated to a white hot stage. That night, the army suddenly "security forces" into Tokyo, declared martial law in the metropolitan area. While Mamoru Oshii's animated films are characterized by large montages depicting scenery, this seven-minute sequence is the longest in the film, with its fine portrayal of military equipment and the state of the characters, and its soundtrack, "Asia" by Kenji Kawai, perfectly creating a sense of urgency on the night of the coup, and the confusion of the soldiers' methodical actions. The "Mobile Police 2" is thus the top military anime in terms of realism.

The cinematography in this short segment is *astounding!*. Such a rich kaleidoscope of perspectives, lighting, environments. Wow. I don't know of anything modern that can match it.
