JHope definitely didn't write JCole's verse. He's been rapping about socially conscious topics and his internal struggles for over 20 years. A lot of his albums are introspective like that. Also, he''s rapping about his own story (approaching his last album and retirement) but he's well known as a very prepared artist- I'm sure he intentionally wrote in a way that mirrored both of their stories. J Cole often researches his collaborating artists and makes his verses fit their tone and style. But in this case the song is very true to both of their styles, because J Cole was probably J Hope's main western inspiration as an artist. The name J Hope was an homage to J Cole, and Hope World (J Hope's first solo album) was an homage to Cole World (one of J Cole's early albums). Also, even J Cole's raps sometimes reference J Cole. For example, his verse in Born Singer (A BTS cover of a J Cole song, Born Sinner) included stylistic emulations of J Cole's pre-chorus in Power Trip. Overall a very very smart song that was very true to both of these artists here.

Thanks, Jim, for putting this on KZfaq. I always appreciate the time you take to comment and explain things, especially about musical things. I had not heard the slide guitar before, so I am taking the time to listen for that. I agree, Hobi gave us something sweeter to hang on to as he leaves us, for now. And speaking of Hobi, is that what J Cole means when he says maybe he should find a different hobby? 🙂 Word play is such an interesting thing.
