J. Krishnamurti - Ojai 1980 - Public Talk 4 - Desire and fear
Summary:
How does desire come into being and why does it play such an extraordinary part in one's life?
Greed is a form of desire. Greed is encouraged by industrialists and advertisements.
Thought creates the image of a person and is attached to that image. Can attachment, with all its consequences, end?
What is fear? Isn't one afraid of letting go of attachment?
Why haven't we, with all our knowledge and experience, resolved this problem of fear completely?
Is fear time? Is fear a movement of thought?

This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

Its stays so strange for me that these videos have a few thousand views while every sort of entertainment will gain those easily within a few hours. I cannot believe that this wouldn’t interest everyone deeply. And it’s not difficult either. We are so caught in entertainment and selfish activity it seems

To get to the essence of JK's expositions, which is, "how to reach a state of thoughtlessness effortlessly, thereby ending anxiety, fear, greed etc.. which is meditation".. read along. There are 3 steps in the process of how the mind works. 1. Perception 2. Sensation 3. Abstraction Let's take an example. Assume you are sitting in front of the computer and are reading a line. The first step is perception. Physically, the light falling on the letters on the monitor is now passing as reflected light into the eyes and into the optic system. This is the first step, perception, that there is something. Step 2 is the optic nerves now convert light into electric impulses and transmit it to the brain. This is sensation, i.e., physical light is transformed into electrical impulses and sensed by the brain as impulses. Step 3 is abstraction. What has just been seen, is now immediately projected as an image, while step 2 continues without your attention. The sensation just got converted to an abstraction. This third step is the problem with everyone, because all the while step 2 is occurring, but step 3 is always creating an image/ a projection of what "is"and we're caught in this step thinking that's reality. If we are simply able to see this shift from step 2 to step 3, that is, how every moment reality is being translated to an abstraction, this is meditation because now you are seeing how the mind works, and it won't take you for a ride. Step 2 can be equated to "choiceless awareness". There's a silence with no effort. If one can see this process like a watchman watching the house, and continue to notice how the mind keeps doing the abstraction of the "now", the brain automatically becomes quiet and as a result fear, anxiety etc which are a result of not noticing the step 3, i.e., abstraction, begin to dissolve automatically. I believe this is true meditation and the beginning of permanent psychological freedom.

Desire is a form of pleasure-seeking (or seeking relief from pain or suffering) which is a product of belief which is a product of one's experiences and conditioning as well as perhaps comparison and competition.
