This is so meta. If I'm getting this straight: 1. Elizabeth compares the mass genocide of Jewish people to the cruel slaughtering of animals. 2. She critiques Paul West for portraying the perpetrators of killing in the Holocaust. She says some subject matter is dangerous to the writer and reader. 3. West himself says that empathy is needed even for perpetrators of crime. 4. The actual Paul West (outside of the text of this book) says that the character of Elizabeth Costello is a sacrificial lamb, being set up for failure. How wonderful that this literary discourse transcends the page in this way, and how apt that he's used another animal analogy, perhaps inherently showing again the problem of analogy.

He focuses 80% of the talk on Elizabeth Coastello.. and hardly any words on Disgrace
