জাম ফল দেখতে ১ থেকে ২.৫ সেন্টিমিটার লম্বা,প্রায় আয়তাকার। গাছ ১৪ থেকে ৬০ ফুট বা এর বেশিও লম্বা হতে পারে। পাতা সরল, বড়, চামড়া পুরু এবং চকচকে। গাছ চিরসবুজ। চকচকে পাতা এবং চিরসবুজ হবার কারণে এর আলংকরিক মান বেশ ভালো।
জাম গাছে মার্চ-এপ্রিলে ফুল আসে। জামের ফুল ছোট এবং ঘ্রাণওয়ালা। মে জুন মাসে ফল বড় হয়। ফলটি লম্বাটে ডিম্বাকার। শুরুতে এটি সবুজ থাকে যা পরে গোলাপী হয় এবং পাকলে কালো বা কালচে বেগুনি হয়ে যায়। এটি খেলে জিহ্বা বেগুনি হয়ে যায়।
