To people who are saying k-pop doesn’t have any variation, you didn’t explore it enough. And why do people in the comments compare Korean idol to Japanese rock bands, solo artists, etc. they are clearly talking about idol groups here. As a Korean, if u dig further into kpop, there are amazing ballads, indie songs, acoustic songs, etc. Some Korean movies and dramas have amazing soundtrack and ost too

True, I started listening to K-Pop back in 1995 and it was the most interesting I have ever heard. The first song I heard was 지금 이대로 by US. I do agree that Korean music has different variety. I have to say there rap music is great!

Interesting that such a young guy would still have Utada Hikaru as his favorite Japanese artist; she debuted 20 years ago. But, he's right. Her music is on a different level than most of what you'd call J-Pop or K-Pop, musically and lyrically. She's been writing her own stuff since she was a teenager (10 of the 12 songs on her debut album released when she was 15 were all written by her, if I remember correctly). If you haven't looked her up before, I strongly recommend it.

I just think it's pop and that's it. They're not really specific subgenres or separate genres to me, the only difference is that they're by Japanese people or Korean people in Korean or Japanese yet they're still pop songs. They're not any special nor different than pop itself or KPOP against JPOP.

In my opinion K-Pop is more focused in professionalism nearly to perfection and reaching many countries while J-Pop focuses mostly in Japanese fans and they try to catch more fans and make them happy rather than knowing how to sing or dance. Nevertheless, I like both genres and I really hope they transmit positive vibes and faith to their fans worldwide :D

It's just the word "professionalism" are perform quite differently in the two country

I started casually listening to jpop about 4 years ago. I much prefer it to western pop music. Recently, I was introduced to Kpop when I heard Twice-Candy Pop (a Japanese lyrics song). I then looked up their other songs and fell in love with the whole story of them. I don't listen to much kpop, but I Stan Twice! Because I found them through their Japanese lyric songs, I feel more like a j-Once than a Jelly.

I can't speak English, so I get help from a translator. In my opinion, the biggest difference between Kpop and Jpop is the universality of emotions. For Koreans, Kpop is very intuitive, closely connected with experience, and based on emotions shared by everyone. Jpop is more abstract and personal, telling more of a more complex and detailed psychology. From the view I see Kpop, there is no problem explaining that Kpop is rapidly gaining popularity. However, the emotions that are universal and shared by everyone must be shallow. It can be said that 'I like this song' often, but it's hard to hear words like 'It's a song that puts my soul intact' , 'It's the best song in my life' , 'I'll never forget it'. It may be a good song for everyone, but it cannot be the best song of my life. I thought so until a few years ago. Watching Kpop's big success makes me feel weird. Not a few people sincerely say that Kpop is the best song in life. Kpop almost seems to go beyond Jpop. Even if it is distortion by the nationalist media, the success of Kpop is still surprising for me. It's not that important, but which part did I get wrong?

In general I think you can find groups that are really unique with both but when looking at them as a whole there tends to be more variety in Jpop. With Kpop there tends to be a trend in music, video, or dance style and many groups will go with the concept (ex. Tropical House was very popular two summers ago) whereas Jpop artists seem to be very unique from eachother. I'm not an expert on either but I think they both have some really great artists regardless, it just depends what you're looking for in an "idol"!

If I had been asked that question 8 or 9 years ago I would have answered "what is Kpop or Jpop?". Now I know what it stands for but I only know and like Kpop and Korean music. I have heard a few Japanese songs on dramas that I have liked, but it is hard to find English titles of songs I hear on Japanese dramas. Heck even getting speedy subtitles to Japanese dramas is an impossibility. Korean music and dramas are just so accessible and easy. It may be because they definitely are aiming for International markets and I don't know if that is the goal for the Japanese entertainment industry.

lets just say both win. they both win our attention and for them most importantly their money. we lose because we are fighting against each other because of corporations lol. i'm just gonna celebrate the artist and composers and producers that actually write these sings - surprise, most songs are written by people all over the world for both kpop and jpop. even some writers wrote the songs for bands you like in japan and korea. the only difference is style (trends) and language. but if we want to be real, japanese music has a very specific sound that you can tell is japanese and sometimes song writers who write japanese music dont follow the standard melodies, and timing a pop song or a song that the masses can consume.

When the word "J-pop" was created about 30 years ago, it meant new type of popular music which is different from the traditional popular music at that time. So it did not include idol music. Today the word "J-pop" is used more widely and it usually means all the popular music in Japan. But if someone is asked in Japan, "What is the typical J-pop group/artist ?", most people will not answer the name of idols, but they will say, like Kenshi Yonezu, Gen Hoshino, Aimyon and Radwimps etc. AKB48 or King & Prince will not come first for "typical J-pop" in Japan ,although many Japanese think that AKB is very "Japanese", unique to Japanese culture. Idol is very popular in Japan, but still some people do not include idol music in J-pop. It is interesting that J-pop for foreign people might be mainly idol music in Japan. K-pop for Japanese people is mainly idol music like BTS, TWICE, EXO and BIGBANG etc.. I am not sure if this is the same in Korea.

I don't know when it comed to both of them, I think they're both catchy. But the more catchy, it just get boring faster. You know I ever get to both of them and when it goes to jpop or kpop idol, I always get bored a month after listen to it. Maybe 2 months is the longest time to get bored. Now I just listen to anime song/Ost and vocaloid. I don't know if it is still considered as jpop when you can see that they get very least noticeable at japanese mainstream media. But that type of song never gets boring to me. I am already liking it for 2 years. My favorite is Lisa. So I think its just preference of each person in music.

So I've been into Jpop (since 2005) and KPOP (since 2008). Honestly I don't think you can even compare the two genres cause the music is SO different but.....okay. Now while I'm way more into Kpop than Jpop recently (mainly because I just can't really get into all of the high pitch/anime/idol sounding songs cause they just all sound the same back in 1997-2011 Jpop was way more diverse and better sounding imo) but since *I LIVE IN JAPAN* I will say there are a LOT of talented singers/groups in Japan that are seriously underrated. For example: I even got to meet Cherrsee last year and they are SO cute and SO humble you just can't help but fall in love with those girls. I hope more people recognize their talents. Also Miura Daichi, FAKY, Riri, EXILE/J Soul Brothers, ONEOKROCK, Perfume and Nissy should be a worldwide superstars. Like everyone outside of Japan should stop sleeping on their talent. LOL

Well, both Jpop and Kpop have their thing. Kpop have a lot of colors, catchy sounds, and lyrics. It's not meaningless of course, some bands truly put emotion when they write their songs and that is really meaningful. Kpop is not trying to turn into american pop. It's just other style, and they experiment as much as in Jpop. And over all, *Kpop is not a music genre*, is a combination of all genres, along with the type of make up and production, where you can find different dances and a whole package of hip-hop, rap, pop, etc. All in different groups. Yes, it's korean music, but not exactly "pop". *Hate seeing people fighting for music. ITS JUST MUSIC, all genres have their own strengths and weaknesses, it's all meaningfull in their own ways, and if something is not meaningfull for you, maybe it is for others.... But why can't people see it?* Sorry for the horrible english btw, I'm peruvian.

Idk why ppl arguing K-pop copying American pop. Most pop genre is literally invented in America. Pop music is an American invention. This includes jpop. So saying they trying to sound American doesn't make sense since the genre itself is already American. You can think of it as mix martial arts of pop music. A combination of different styles

Personally my favorite Japanese groups are XG (not Kpop) and &Team who’ll debut in in December (they’ll be both kpop and jpop just like the 1st groups I mentioned plus they have a Japanese German, Korean, and Taiwanese member)

I think these Japanese people don't know what "J-pop" means...especially since it's not called that domestically. The interviewer should have said "pops", not "J-pop"(as that's what us foreigners call their popular music). Considering how big Yonezu Kenshi and Hoshino Gen is there, I doubt they really think J-pop doesn't have good rhythm.

People who say there are only idol groups in Kpop, have to shame on how short their thinking is. As in any country, there are various genres in Kpop. Recently, vocalists such as Kim Bum-soo and Sohyang are recognized worldwide through KZfaq. Idol is simply a world famous part of Kpop. I want to ask people who worshiping Jpop and saying there are only idol groups in Kpop. So Jpop aren't exist, because there is no famous part of japop in the worldwide? Why can't they have this simple back idea?
@alexdhamp
@alexdhamp 5 жыл бұрын
Kim Bum-soo and Sohyang? You should have said IU, at least many foreign fans know who she is. or Ailee... Also, you should blame Korea for only pushing idols onto the world-wide stage as part of their Hallyu Wave. Also, Babymetal says hello...as does Utada Hikaru(though on a smaller extent and thanks to Kingdom Hearts being huge all over the world).

@@alexdhamp Utada Hikaru and Baby Metal? They were the height of the Ottaku group and the japanese nationalist marketing, right? Kim Beom-soo sold out Carnegie Hall for the first time as an Asian singer and was also on the Billboard charts. Sohyang was invited to the U.S. and then sang The Star-Spangled Banner as a professional vocalist . Who is the first soprano in Asia to dominate and sell out the world's top five opera theaters? It's Sumi Jo. The Korean government has never pushed the Korean wave. BTW Japanese government has spent tens of trillions of dollars on 'Cool Jepen'. Even that used Korean culture as an advertisement at the Cool Jepen event and the contents were also Copy of British policy, right?

@@user-qh3hv3fv9w Like really I don't give a S*** about Kpop anyways if they famous or not. Besides idols in Japan there are much more in Japan who's sings and a songwriter. Kpop do but that only if they none idols. Most of the time You see like 90% are so are idols in Kpop. Kpop is way too teenager for me I'm 35 F Y I. In Japan I don't really listen to Idols. I listened to more Pop/R&B/Rock Like Aimer Little Glee Monster, Rampage from Exile Tribe, AAA, SKY HI and I Like many solo artist in Japan. I personally love both, though I tend to listen to more K-Pop only because I have a couple of favorites. When I first started listening to both genres, I generally thought it all sounded the same. With Japanese I thought it was just a lot "cutesy" stuff until I came across M-Flo, Basi, Da-iCE, Chanmina, BAND-MAID, etc. Same with K-Pop, as far as being one style only to find Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock, etc., etc. I think with all music, if you only listen to one style of the genre (and you don't explore its sub-genres) then it becomes boring and stagnant. I also think that outside of those countries, even genres that are necessarily idol music tend to get automatically lumped in with J-Pop/K-Pop simply because the song or album was written mostly in that language... So, sometimes what you think is "Pop" is really more reggae or classical, etc. Both are unique and yet similar in some ways. Now, as far as idols go, I think they do tend to differ. I almost think that J-Pop idols have stricter rules than K-Pop, but I'm pretty sure both have to go through some very strenuous and very stressful training periods. The fashion and styling is also different of course, but other than that I think both genres are great and I give them both props. (^_^) I'm also planning to listen to more C-Pop as well since I've come across a couple of artists that are fantastic! I say give both of them a shot. If you don't like it, cool. If you do--great! Feel free to share your bias list with me. ;D

J-pop and K-pop are both industries with a lot of different kinds of music, both good or bad, so I have no idea why people are getting so butthurt lol. The only thing I’ll say is in Korea hiphop is relatively bigger, whilst in Japan rock is. Also anyone who thinks the shitty repetitive Idol music of certain K-pop groups sounds American has no idea what American pop is like lol. On the other hand I will say shitty Japanese Idol music is very uniquely shitty, although they are even less competent singers.

wardah hidayatillah Korean pop doesn’t even sound like pop it has a mix of everything as well automatically making it not pop it sounds more like hip hop or rap not pop and also the fact that they have choreography changes by the genre heavily also for some reason Koreans think kpop is actually a genre which makes no sense we have j pop j rock j rap j metal while all Korean Groups fall into pop like lmao it’s not a genre they can’t even tell their genres and you have to agree with me on this all k pop fans think that pop is dancing rapping trap rock or rmb which is not pop so they should really learn their genres 🤷🏻‍♂️

The reason why J-Idols don't allow fans to take their pictures is because of the company/agency that they work under. The agency (Johnny's esp.) is completely against it because the fans might photocopy them and post it somewhere and everything gets weird. Or else, J-Idols are just like K-Idols.
