Pom Harrington presents this rare, first edition, first impression Hobbit, boasting the first issue jacket with the hand-correction to “Dodgeson” on the rear inside flap.
The first edition was published on 21 September 1937 and the first impression of 1,500 copies was sold out by December. A beautiful copy in the unusually bright jacket.

Darn I thought maybe I had one. Mine is published by Houghton Mifflin Company, New York, 1938. I think it might be a 1st U.S. edition though, but no dust jacket. Cool to have, but no early retirement. *sigh

Here's an easier way to tell if you have a first edition: simply read the chapter titled "Riddles in the Dark". It's completely different in the second edition onwards than it was in the first edition.

Fortunately, there is a facsimile version of this copy, that is exactly like this copy. They even kept the old schilling prices and the corrected spelling mistake in the back.

I swear, I found this exact same novel with the dust cover at my primary school 6 years ago, in fact, I read the whole thing! Can someone tell me if this is likely to have happened or if it's just a case of jamais vu?

Me, too. But I am guessing the dust jacket isn't original, especially at a school library. They're likely updating the dust jacket all of the time to better protect their books.

You probably found the 75 anniversary edition which uses the same jacket design and it's the same size but a lot newer

That does seem more likely, but like I said, we will never know... And hey, every now and then someone finds a first edition hiding at the back or a used book store or in a flea market. Isn't that a lovely thought?

The dust jacket for the 75th anniversary edition is similar, but not the same. The mountains are coloured grey instead of blue and the Sun on the front of the jacket, as well as the dragon (Smaug) on the back are red. In the first edition, the Sun and the dragon are white, because the publisher saved money on using fourth colour on the dust jacket. The first edition jacket is printed in only in green, blue and black.

Tolkien altered chapter 5 to fit more with LOR. I don't mind the first version personally because the hobbit is almost in another dimension from LOR because of its writing style and it's not true that Gollum happily gives Bilbo the ring in that version because Gollum does not know that Bilbo has the ring.
