Unfortunately, the modern piano has long supplanted the harpsichord as the go-to medium for keyboard works long ago for obvious reasons. As elegant as the harpsichord is, it is treated more as an historical curiosity, albeit an important one at that.

Without going into details - there are a huge number of arrangements from the harpsichord for piano, but there is not a single reverse arrangement. The expressive possibilities of the harpsichord are very limited compared to the piano. Although the harpsichord is one of my favorite instruments.

I completed a degree in Music (vocal performance) at University of Houston in the late 70's. Analyzing JS Bach's music in advanced theory classes was a revelation to me -- the "engineering" aspect of EVERY SINGLE PIECE HE WROTE was an absolute marvel, each time we studied one. What an enormous body of MASTERWORKS -- absolutely stunning to our teeny little minds today! :-) JS Bach had a beautifully clear, concise, musically brilliant (and prolific!) mind -- hundreds and hundreds of marvelous gems to discover, lost in awe of God's gifts to him...

Harpsichords made a brief comeback in the mid-1960s when several bands began using them, it was called “Baroque pop” for anyone who wants to hear more modern usages of the harpsichord. Me personally, I adore this instrument and can’t get enough of it, regardless of the era or style. It’s elegance always shines through.
@777rogerf
@777rogerf 10 ай бұрын
The comeback of the harpsichord continues and grows. And now--if I am not mistaken---a comeback of the fortepiano is in the works, and why not, because with tasteful electronic amplification, it can replace any grand piano in the largest hall.
@cactusjackNV
@cactusjackNV 10 ай бұрын
@@777rogerf In truth it never went away. But the resurgence of the 60s was quite the pop phenomenon and was larger in percentage and scale compared to the "fortepiano" thing you are talking about. Have you ever heard of synthesizers and electronic keyboards?? Basically the same thing different incarnation.

Ah, the harpsichord. It's sad to see people who look down upon this magnificent instrument and taking it for granted without even hearing the beauty that comes from within it's cords and ivory tips and the sounds that bellow from it's wooden cavity. Those who are new to this type of music, I implore you to listen to as much as you can. The harpsichord is such a beauty among most other ivory tipped instrument. A hidden beauty, If you will. To know how to play and be able to have it in my own home would be a dream come true. I hope you all enjoy the harpsichord as much as I do.

This movement is a fugue, which is to a certain extent a mathematical exercise - but what you say has a great deal of importance: Bach was fascinated by numerology and the balance of numbers can be seen everywhere in his music. J. S. Bach is my favorite of all time. This music, the Brandenburg Concertos and some of the Well Tempered Clavier send me to heaven. I have played his music on my piano & synthesizer for 55 years and the harpsichord on the Synth sounds great. He was truly a gift from God. It is sad that his music went out of style for awhile until Couperin and others brought it back. Schumann wrote that the WTC is the daily bread for pianists and Beethoven established himself as a pianist playing them for awhile. Rock stars can make hundreds of millions now while Bach had to push just to make a living. Thank goodness that one of his sons kept all of the music.

so that's the deal for being the world's greatest composers (Mozart, Bach, Beethoven...). live in poverty , great distress, despair and misery but your name will shine until the end of humanity. There is no exception: It's not widely known but Bach had to watch 7 of his children dying.
@albertperrin694
@albertperrin694 2 жыл бұрын
@@ludwigvanbeethoven61 In spite of Bach losing 7 children during or right after their birth and 3 others not making it into adulthood, he still had a sense of humor. Some of his music shows it. You are right that he and his wives must have suffered terribly. I cannot imagine losing a child. The extremely detailed Pulitzer prize finalist book on Bach by Christoff Wolff also showed that he had some critics and one really nasty one who attacked him about the first WTC book and others. It bothered him but then he wrote the 2nd volume, book II of the WTC. He also had some fun with his sons where upon hearing music he would talk about the many other ways to write and arrange it. When he was older he got his recognition from a more important critic but believed that his music had fallen out of style before he died. If only he could have known that he would become one of the greatest composers and teachers of all time. I guess this happens all of the time like e.g. giving a Nobel prize to dead winners. You probably read the book but it is called Johann Sebastian Bach; The Learned Musician. The detail is amazing. Best to you.

I find the great composers beyond incredible and am forever indebted to their immense and defining contribution to the evolution of music. And while I will not compare them to these same composers, I am also extremely grateful for and appreciate a number of lyrical artists, many of whom refer to themselves as "rappers." Not all rap music is on the same level, nor do they communicate the same messages. Thankfully, there are extremely talented artists who communicate the insightful, inner world of so many people worldwide, speaking on crucial social issues as well as matters of our inner psyche. Unfortunately, I expect you to lump all rappers together, so please forgive me if I am out of line in assuming this. If not, perhaps you might consider these artists, if given the opportunity. Wishing you well.

I love all music, but I must say I think there is a really strong argument to be made that Bach was the single greatest musician in the Western European tradition of music. He composed more music, of more different types, and with as many or more great masterpieces, as any other musician in history, as well as being arguably the greatest instrumental performer of his day. Much as I love Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Shostakovich and Stravinsky, it's hard to see how even their genius approaches that of Bach. He really was the GOAT, IMHO.
