I'd say some of the ones from _The Art of Fugue_ are better fugues; but this is certainly the best explicitly choral work written.

J.S. Bach really was an unparalleled genius in contrapunto. I've heard from some people that his music is too difficult to follow, perhaps some might consider it too austere, but I simply love the "mathematical" structure of its nature. When I was learning the piano he was by far my favorite composer. This chamber music orchestra allong with the conductor and the choir have done a magnificent job with this piece. Bravo for a spectacular performance.

I'd say that Palestrina's mastery of counterpoint equals that of Bach, give it a go, it's truly spectacular

One of Bach's final compositions in it's complete form, it was started years before in application for a post as Kappellmeister in the court of Dresden. But the great irony is that he finished this monumental and sublime work knowing he would never hear it performed. Why? I like to think that, being Lutheran, he was not permitted to write the standard Catholic Mass which has a musical tradition going back several hundred years and was a genre written by a long list of great composers. Bach wished to add to this body of works and the tradition with his own masterpiece, his contribution to the literature. And we hear his genius on full display. The Kyrie is a piece not written in any form that can readily be defined: it is above, beyond what had come before. It is fugue, concerto, sonata at once, and neither of each. In it's entirety it is the SUMMA of Western Musical thought up to that time and made greater by Bach's hand and craftsmanship. Through that loftiness one can truly hear the voice of God Himself.

The ratio of thumbs up to views is not as high as it should be. Should be thrice as much. Great as Bach is, Mozart's Kyrie from Davidde Penitente is at least as impressive. Haydn wrote to Leopold Mozart in 1785: "Before God, and as an honest man, I tell you that your son is the greatest composer known to me either in person or by name. He has taste, and, what is more, the most profound knowledge of composition." I would add, that the sentiments Mozart expresses are top notch. Glenn Gould dissented.

Mozarts took a little from all the major masses of the time including this one for his final masterpiece. Mozart took it to another level with classical style. Mozart also used parts of Michael haydna requiem

Amazing that mozart neared "greatest" status by being the best to study this man. Give mozart about 15 or 20 more years and mozart would've surpassed not only bach , but everyone. Mozart studied Bach to revolutionize the classical style. Beethoven studied Mozart to move to the new romantic style. Had Mozart lived longer , he would've been the main bridge.
