Chapeau bas!

This is my favorite Bach piece. I have a CD from Elly Ameling with the Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, which I find the best recording of this piece. However, Ms. Sampson does an incredible version in her own right. Absolutely lovely!

Serious props to the cellist! I heard the soprano as too emotional and warm, perhaps needing to take it down a notch with the flutter vibrato, IMO. Maybe IMO a more theatrical voice suited to Handel?
@jasonhurd4379
@jasonhurd4379 2 жыл бұрын
@@DonVueltaMorales Interesting. To my ear, the vibrato is ideal, not obtrusive; and if anything, Miss Sampson could have been even more theatrical, a quality which is eminently suited to both the sacred and the secular cantatas of J.S. Bach. I should be sorry to think that his music should be to any extent cold and emotionless, as your comment seems to imply that it should. This is, after all, a cantata celebrating a wedding, and a warmer and more emotional event would be difficult to imagine. Forgive me if I have misunderstood your comment.

@@jasonhurd4379 A "wedding" as in the spiritual union of the soul and Jesus ("as Christ loved the Church"). Bach's audience in Leipzig would probably not have been exposed to too many Italianate operatic singers and probably been a bit behind the stylistic curve of Vienna, Dresden, or Hamburg. The Germans themselves were the _Singspiel_ people who didn't have a desire to hear full-blown opera in their own language. I guess those are my bases for wanting to hear this a bit plainer. I think the vibrato, especially at the ends of some phrases, sounds almost like an improvised ornament. And the recitatives might also have been more direct. But, I'm being picky, and in reality, I mean, what's not to like about the Bachstiftung?

I would predict that the future audiences will be about the same size, same age, and same hair color (or lack thereof). I heard Elly Ameling sing this piece 50 years ago, and the audience was primarily "mature" folks. Old people are a renewable resource!

It's a real party atmosphere! So I imagine a wedding celebration in the Geriatrie: sounds like directly from the Casa Verdi Milano. This doesn't mean the older audience, but the soloist (not her appearance): The text «Sich üben im Lieben, im Scherzen sich herzen ...» etc. sounds like a persiflage. Perhaps there really is still a fulfilled love life in the vocal age. But this has nothing to do with Bach!!
