Wat fantastisch is de persoonlijke interpretatie van de Leeuw van de al zolang bestaande Mattheus die resulteerde in zijn adembenemende "bewerking" waar u nu naar kijkt. Een bijzonder mens dat zo gemist wordt.

Not sure why but I really love the appoggiature the flutes have (e.g. at the end)

the first motiv is in D-major and the second one is G-Major but it beginning on an a and h and c it has a very very suggestive minor-pull, that leaves you thinking of a-minor until you reach the f-sharp, where the major is completed, and I like it very much because entangled are plight and grief with calm joy and felicity as both are integrals of a humans life... Zo moet het ooit geklonken hebben, Wat een componist, Wat een dirigent, Wat een orkest, Wat een solisten. Ontroerend mooi.

@@emilbakker In Bach's tijd in ieder geval géén gemengd koor, vrouwen mochten toen niet zingen in de kerk, sopraan- en altpartijen werden door jongens gezongen.

Prachtig, een extra langzame versie. Reinbert de Leeuw wordt echt gemist.

I would not call it "extra slow" . This is the tempo it is meant to be .

Heb de films van Cherry Duyns drie keer bekeken. Heb de Mattheus nog nooit van zo 'dichtbij' en met de tekst zo helder mogen ervaren. Hoop ook dat de films op DVD verschijnen.

Heh, at the start of listening to this I thought it was a bit slow, but by the end I'd decided that it was the slowest recording I've heard where I'm happy with the tempo. I think because it is quite mellow in terms of the timbre of the chorus and in terms of dynamic range, that's why it worked for me. Also being at A=415Hz probably helps

@@andrewphillips-hird3761 I personally prefer with this type of slow tempo, Otto Klemperer may have made the one I like the most.

@@nisbiyyah I first heard the Klemperer version and it has always been my favourite interpretaton, especially for this piece. Majestic sadness should never be hurried. I love wallowing in its spiritual beauty and emotional power.

I enjoy this tempo and I've listened to many faster ones which of course I've also enjoyed . . . but the slowness adds something the others don't. Just a matter of taste I suppose.

@@haxstir The fast tempi are not in line with the title: "Wir setzen uns mit tränen nieder". Therefore I think it is not only taste.
