Jacinda Ardern's full Christchurch speech: 'Let us be the nation we believe ourselves to be'

'What words adequately express the pain and suffering of 50 men, women and children lost, and so many injured?' asked New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern during her address at a memorial service for the Christchurch victims. 'I thought there were none. And then I came here and was met with this simple greeting. As-salaam Alaikum. Peace be upon you.' She says those words 'have left us humbled, and they have left us united. Adern was speaking at the National Remembrance Service in North Hagley Park in Christchurch, New Zealand to remember the 50 people killed in the Christchurch mosque shootings on 15 March

Empathy won’t fix anything 😂 you think giving kiss to a lion is going to keep you alive, no. Punishment has to better. People usually commit these crimes when their lives are meaningless and politics is more important for some reason. @@luchiboy Yea that's true now I think about it - I never noticed that before. However, here in Australia we mostly do have a sign language translate, especially with Labor governments I feel like, but that part might not be accurate. I also think it's amazing that in NZ they have Maori as another main language, and that their leaders are learning it. Australia might've done something similar of course if not for the fact that no one Aboriginal language is spoken across the country.

She was speaking in an opening introduction in Te Reo Māori, the original language of tangata whenua (indigenous people of New Zealand). In her speech, she made a recognition of how important Maori people are in New Zealand as well as their ways of "Act of giving" (Manaakitanga)..

They have killed off quite a lot of them and now starting on another group of immigrants who went there and we're accepted freely. A year later. I remember the tears I shed. Crying like a baby at 27 years old. Crying when I saw how the NZ People and Jacinda acted and answered on this tragedy. I felt so comforted even tho I have no connection to NZ at all. Living in Europe i have never felt more welcomed than by the amazing response of the NZ people! I have never felt accepted like by the NZ people! New Zealand I love you. Thank you. Jacinda Adern I love you. Thank you. I cried again watching this. At 28 years old. A man who faced all kinds of hardships. Crying like a baby now.

Hi Saim 🖐🏽 As New Zealanders it's written in our anthem that all are welcome here and it's the undertone of what it is to be Kiwis 🇳🇿 Here is a paragraph from it which Jacinda said in her speech "Men of every creed and race, Gather here before Thy face, Asking Thee to bless this place, God defend our free land". We as Kiwis don't seen the Muslim faith as terrorists despite in comparison to the rest of the West paint it to be which is lead by popularist leaders. As a Kiwi I wish you well and hope you pass on this compassion to others in your local community.

This Prime Minister is example of what a leader should look like and act like. A role model and for me, other leaders should emulate from her. I am not from New Zealand, but I have heard that , the country is very peaceful and loving people. For anyone who doesn't quite understand it, this is us here in NZ FINALLY getting in to the "thoughts & prayers" stage of recovery from a terrorist attack like that. See we ACT & THEN we grieve. Hopefully certain other countries who experience these sort of events more frequently can copy our example moving forward.

Ii really Admire and respect this women and All of New Zealand for their true humanity and for their solidarity and Love. They are an inspiration to the whole world so much more united in love and understanding that we are all one and we must stick together. Jacinda Adern is a great human being she has a good heart♥️❤️♥️ ❤️ ♥️ ❤️ ♥️ I never knew how GREAT THE PEOPLE OF NEW ZEALAND ARE. the Haka is so beautiful and powerful, moving it brings me to tears even though I do not understand the words I can feel the passion, love and real deep respect. Jacinda Adern speeches also bring me to tears and happy tears of hope and unity over hate and division.

What a personality! Concise and to the point. Look at the the difference between this Prime minister and the jester they have in the USA, one of the most powerful countries in the world. If only he had a grain of Jacinda's wisdom, he wouldn't push the world from bad to worse. Mr. President, take note and convince yourself that there are people greater than you. You have a lot to learn Mrs. Arden, you sure know how to manage crises. New Zealanders should be proud of you. In fact, the whole world. I wish we had a minister like you in my country.

In the WEEK following the Christchurch terror attacks, 3 people were killed by an Islamic terrorist in Utrecht, a Muslim immigrant tried to burn 51 children alive in Italy, German police arrested 10 Islamists who “wanted to kill as many non-believers as possible”, and Brunei passed a law declaring that members of the LGBT community will now be stoned to death In addition, Islamist/Muslim countries remain rooted to the bottom of the WEF Gender Equality index But here’s our PM saying that we need to welcome people from cultures with such views into our country - and any dissent is now “hate speech” Nothing justifies the mass slaughter of innocent people, but this reaction from Ardern frankly been absurd and completely disproportionate compared to the reaction to Islamist terror attacks Were Muslims wearing crucifixes when an Islamist mowed down 85 men, women and children in Nice? Or blew up 202 tourists in Bali? Or shot 130 people in Paris? Or Brussels? Or Barcelona? Or London? No? So why is the PM wearing a hijab?

It is wonderful that Jacinda’s words and actions have impacted so many people positively globally, we are very proud of her and it is a great and important message but it breaks my heart that it seems to be so unusual for so many people worldwide to experience such an attitude. I live in NZ, we are not perfect, but respect for others and togetherness in a crisis do seem to come to the fore in our society as shown in events of our recent past. We are not exceptional here, we’re just human and perhaps at this point we can still see that in others too. I hope that can be reclaimed in places that are experiencing divisions. Peace to all!

@@accessdenied3350 it was my little joke. I was pulling your leg. Speaking Te Reo Maori is not unusual in NZ. It's an official language. Look, most of the political party leaders in NZ are Maori and so is a big part of the population. For example the leader and deputy leader of the biggest party ( National ) are part Maori. Jacinda is head of a coalition of smaller parties. I don't think outsiders quite understand NZ. It's not a white country with a few ''natives''. There is no comparison to the USA and Comanche. Totally different
