Today being the anniversary of Jack Benny's birth, I figured I'd re-post this wonderful tribute presented by CBS News upon Jack's unexpected death from pancreatic cancer the day after Christmas, 1974. Hosted by Charles Kuralt, this is a respectful and well done tribute/obituary to a masterful performer and universally beloved human being. Includes a good deal of clips from the Jack Benny radio show and television show, as well as interviews with cast members Frank Nelson, Don Wilson and Mel Blanc.
Also included, and not available anywhere else that I'm aware of, is film footage of Benny's funeral (32:47). Among the mourners interviewed briefly are Danny Thomas, Ronald & Nancy Reagan, and Milton Berle. There's even a priceless record of Bob Hope's deeply moving eulogy (35:28)-- George Burns was so overcome with grief he was unable to utter more than a few words before needing to be escorted from podium.
A show both funny and emotionally moving-- just the kind of tribute a giant like Jack Benny deserved.
NOTE: This used to be posted to my long defunct Vintage Comedy Vault channel, which was unceremoniously deleted by KZfaq last year due to ridiculous copyright problems over other videos. While this isn't strictly speaking a WML video, Jack was a three time mystery guest, along with mystery guest appearances by Dennis Day and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson. I hope folks don't mind my adding this video to the WML channel, but I want to make it as easily findable as possible, and I know there's LOTS of overlap between fans of WML and fans of Jack Benny!

Today being the anniversary of Jack Benny's birth, I figured it was about time I reposted this very special tribute done by CBS just after his passing in 1974, which used to be on my Vintage Comedy Vault channel (the whole channel was deleted by KZfaq last year due to insane copyright problems with videos other than this one). This isn't *really* a WML-related video, except the loose connection that Jack was a three time mystery guest, along with mystery guest appearances by Dennis Day and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson. I hope folks don't mind my adding this video to the WML channel, but I want to make it as easily findable as possible, and besides, I know there's LOTS of overlap between fans of WML and fans of Jack Benny! --------------------------- Please click here to subscribe to the WML channel if you haven't already-- you'll find the complete CBS series already posted, and you'll be able to follow along the discussions on the weekday "rerun" videos: kzfaq.info/love/hPE75Fvvl1HmdAsO7Nzb8w Join our Facebook group for WML-- great discussions, photos, etc, and great people! facebook.com/groups/728471287199862/

What's My Line? .. In the early 60s my brother and I bicycling over to CBS on Melrose Blvd expecting to see Bozo the clown TV show, we ended up reluctantly with tickets for Jack Benny since the clown was off the air for the season. . Although he had some famous guest star we didn't think it was a very entertaining show since we're very young.. my parents came along with us the second time they really enjoyed it...

My job each day at age ten was to go out and pick up the morning and the evening newspaper. When I went out on 12/26/74, and read the headline, I cried all of the way back up to our house (1/4 mile driveway). My Canadian grandmother was down for the holidays. We sat over hot cocoa and consoled each other with our favourite Benny jokes and stories. I was ten, she was sixty-four.

I lived off Coldwater canyon in the 90210 zip code in the 1970's, I regularly saw Milton Berle walking at the Coldwater canyon park, he was found there every day, I saw Paul Newman a few times at Nate & Al's deli, I saw Kareem Abdul Jabbar in Westwood one time and stood next to him at Tower books, I met Johnny Crawford of The Rifleman show, I saw Phil Silvers regularly shopping at the Von's at Ventura blvd and Coldwater canyon in Studio city. My Uncle was The Tijuana smalls man and Doggo in The Octagon. I used to see Lucille Ball at the private club owned by Hugh Hefner called Pips, she played backgammon there all the time, I met her and talked to her a few times. George Burns said the only two times he ever cried in public was doing the funeral eulogies of his Wife Gracie Allen who died on August 27, 1964 and his lifetime Best Friend Jack Benny who died on December 26, 1974. Many who personally knew George Burns stated there was something very different from him especially after Jack Benny's death who was the only close confident that kept that spirit up in him in the 10 years after his Wife Gracie Allen died.

Jack Benny was a gentle giant. I was only 19 when he died, but I have so many wonderful memories of seeing and enjoying him on TV, mostly on talk shows, reruns of his program, and specials. In my later years, I discovered his films and classic radio shows. This is the only the second time since its original air date that I've seen this tribute. It warms my heart to see all the accolades given to Jack Benny by his former associates and peers in the sad wake of his untimely death. Jack was a beloved entertainment treasure whose immense talent rested not just in that most unique comedic persona of his, never equaled before or since, but also in his indelible way of spontaneously provoking rapturous glee in the audience through the most simple actions and mannerisms. I regret not having been born early enough to have heard Jack live on the radio or seen his voluminous television work at first-airing, but I do take respite in knowing his work lives on thanks to the archiving efforts of channels like this!

Bob Hope on Jack Benny's death: "It is the beginning of an end of an era". Seeing the people still alive at his funeral, all of them since then have also left us, Bob Hope couldn't have been more truthful. An era that is sadly forgotten of multi-talented people who could be funny in a smart simple way, without being rude or abrasive. Simpler times, fun times... I was born after Jack Benny's program left the air, yet I love that era, the golden age of television. I am drawn to the class act of these old timers. Thank you for preserving this tribute to a great man.

Richard Cook Growing up in Central Jersey I remember my first reaction to hearing Mary was from Plainfield. I really thought she was. The first recording of a Benny radio show I heard was the one from NYC in May 1947. Al Jolson was the guest. It took me many years to understand his jokes. I had no idea what a Hooper was (the old radio rating system like TVs Nielsen’s). Another part of the same show, Mary’s sister was supposedly dating an undertaker who had a convertible hearse. I have yet to find that funeral home in Plainfield. :-)

I discovered jack Benny on one of those cartoon shows growing up.He in in a cartoon form of mouse he was being chased by a cat.He and his wife (also in a cartoon form) were being lured into what they thought was an entrance of a restaurant turned out to be the open mouth of a cat and everything went dark.next thing you know there was this guy sitting in a chair having a nightmare (turn out to be Jack Benny) it was that particular Warner Bros. cartoon that would intoduce me to this guy.from that them on, I started to do my research about him and I have to admit, I didn't find him funny at first but when I started to do some more research, I realize, that was his act.his mannerisms, his hand on his jaw,his reaction, his response.his interaction with his colleagues especially his friend and housekeeper, Rochester with the gravel voice.I was fourteen years old in the early nineteen eighties when I discovered him.today, I'm 51 and I'm one of the few people of color who get a chance of watching the old Jack Benny show as well as other old classic t.v shows of the past.I'm not ashamed to say that I'm addicted!

I remember Jack Benny got one of the longest laughs on radio when he did a skit where his Benny was being held up at gunpoint, and referenced his character being a notorious skinflint. To me its an interesting contrast how Jack's death was treated in contrast to that of Bob Hope nearly thirty years later. When Jack died he was still actively performing and also had not acquired a reputation for being "old hat" in his material that unfortunately later stigmatized Hope as the years went by. In addition, Bob then lived another decade totally out of the public eye so that when he finally did die you didn't have hour long tributes by the network or even the Tonight Show being pre-empted as NBC did the night of Jack's death for a discussion.
@ACcountryFan
@ACcountryFan 8 жыл бұрын
Another point of view is the culture had changed dramatically from 1974 to 2003, the year Bob Hope died at 100. The age group networks strive for probably had no clue who Bob Hope happened to be, sad to say, and the people that decide what gets put on the air weren't about to remove a slate of programs to pay tribute to somebody that people under 30 probably never heard of before or perhaps heard of but really didn't appreciate the impact he had on entertainment. Then there was the fact that Bob's famed military television specials, by the late '60s, had unforeseen consequences. USO programs are something he had took part in since the 1930s but he was now entertaining the troops during a time in history when the hippies and the like spoke out loudly against Vietnam...something he didn't face during other times of conflict in America's history and he more or less became offensive to the hippie culture simply due to differences in world view. That, rather than his overall comedic formula, is the thing that stigmatized him with that generation. The anti-war crowd gave him so much flack for entertaining the troops. But, getting back to the lack of massive coverage of his death in 2003, I'm probably being cynical and exaggerating just a bit but I'd bet demographics/ratings is the main reason the death of Bob Hope or even Milton Berle ("Mr. Television"), for example, didn't receive the kind of coverage Jack Benny received. But also, in 1974, you didn't have the massive cable TV system or satellite TV as we've come to know it or the Internet. The broadcast networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX) more or less shun this type of programming and they leave it to cable channels or Internet sites that cater to specific audiences to air tribute programs. Also not to be forgotten is that Jack Benny had a continuous presence in entertainment for 33 years (1932-1965) combining both his weekly radio and TV programs. Then he returned every so often with hour long Jack Benny specials to close out the decade and then a couple of Farewell Specials aired in the early 1970s.

Even near the end of his life, Jack Benny's timing and delivery were as sharp as ever. Recalling Bob Hope, he may have simply tried to hang on too long; his performances in some of his later specials were almost embarrassing, and I am speaking as a longtime fan. And unlike Benny, Hope's wolfish wiseguy personality couldn't age gracefully.

A wonderful tribute to a wonderful performer and human being. Jack Benny was the first of the classic comedians that I enjoyed so much at that time (and still do) to pass away and even though I was very young then I was very saddened by his passing. As a matter of fact his was the first passing of someone that I "knew" and "loved" before any of my family members that I was close with. Jack remains a special person in my life to this day and always will. Jack will never be forgotten by those of us who appreciate classic comedians and his legend and legacy will live on forever.

My mother loved Jack Benny tremendously - at first from radio in her young years, and later, of course on TV. When his show came on television in the 50s and 60s, the set was automatically turned to his "program." My sister and I would watch along with my mother, who would always break up in tearful laughter. Eventually, I understood the jokes and started laughing myself. He's one entertainer I wished I had met in real life. RIP, Mr. Benny.

I remember when he died. I put his obit from the Chicago Tribune in my comedian’s book by William Chan. I only had a dim conception of him but the first time I saw him on TV was on The Lucy Show where they went into his vault. I never laughed so hard in my life. Years later they used to play his radio shows on “Those Were The Days” and then I discovered his genius. He was truly an American original who will stand with the greats of comedy forever! His timing was indeed perfection, as was his kindness to many performers. I wished I had been able to meet him and work with him.

Thanks for sharing this with us. He was such a great comedian in his own way. And it's true there are few people (I can't think of no one right now) that give awy all the laughs to ones collegues. I remember one episode on Screen Guild Players with Barbara Stanwyck (she was the reason I heard that episode) named: "why Jack is not going to appear on show" It shows quite a lot of this special art. All the fun out of laughing about him. He seems to be a very special person. Seeing all this people mourn over him it's a bit sad, but the extracts of his work make me laugh most of the time. Thanks again Gary

I grew up in Waukegan, Il, Jack's hometown and I did attend Jack Benny Junior High and the school "mascot" is the 39ers, so even 46 years after his passing his memory lives on. I have just finished reading his autobiography written by Jack and his daughter Mary and it gave a good picture of a very active life in a relatively short time.

Jack's "I'm thinking it over" answer to "your money or your life" is said to be the funniest moment in radio comedy. The audience laughter lasted some 3 minutes and was edited out of the transcript recording later (radio tapes were sent to our soldiers overseas) because it "was too long and disrupted the program." -A History of Old Radio

Thanks for re-posting this; I had seen it when you posted it originally. I loved Jack Benny watching him on TV from the late 50's thru the mid 60's. The thing that bothers me so is that I was 23 going on 24 when he died and I admired him greatly, yet I can't remember the day he died and somehow I feel that I should. I've purchased every book, tape and dvd about Jack that I could; it bothers me that, in retrospect, I didn't appreciate this man enough when he was alive.

Thank you for posting this tribute to one of the greatest comics the world has ever seen. Great though George Burns was in The Sunshine Boys (and he really was), it would have been wonderful to have seen Jack in the role - or any role. The interview he did with Phil Silvers was particularly moving, too. There's no one like these people these days, no matter where you happen to live.

Glad you appreciated the video-- and thanks for the comment, Robert! There's some silent costume test footage of Jack as Al Lewis available on the bonus features of "The Sunshine Boys" DVD, but that's all we're ever gonna get. Al Lewis was actually a pretty unusual part for George Burns, in that it required him to act feeble minded much of the time (not that Jack Benny would be expected to play a feeble minded character, either!)

Late 1974 marked the deaths of one of the most important two men in 20th century entertainment. Ed Sullivan on October 13, 1974 and Jack Benny on December 26, 1974. In 1973 no one could have been prepared in the next 24 months that Jack Benny, Ed Sullivan, Cass Elliott, The Three Stooges Larry Fine & Moe Howard and Others would all be gone.

I have to say, I was touched by Mr. Anderson's sentiments. It was obvious that the man admired and cared about Jack Benny a great deal. It's not at all surprising to me that those two men would have such a wonderful friendship in those days because often it's the people who have a good sense of humor who are the easiest going, 'coolest' and are less likely to be prejudicial.
