We feature Jack Brabhams BT31 at the Phillip Island Classic.
Multiple Formula One world champion Jack Brabham's BT31 Repco V8 has an interesting history and is one of the very few if not the only such car still being raced in anger. It only raced twice, Jack Brabham finishing third in the Sandown Park Tasman race in March 1969. Brabham placed the car fifth on the grid, behind Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt in the works Lotus 49Bs, Chris Amon's Ferrari Dino, and Piers Courage in Frank Williams' 1967 ex-F1 Brabham BT24. He got ahead of Courage at the start and finished third behind Amon and Rindt, then continued on winning a Gold Star race at Bathurst, breaking the lap record on his way to an easy victory before returning to Europe for the F1 season. That would be the last time the car was raced in that period.
Jack Brabham along with engineer and race car designer Ron Tauranac founded the Brabham constructor and racing team in 1962.
The BT31 was one of series of designs and the BT31 was built for the 1969 Tasman series, fitted with a Repco 830 V8 engine, as used on the previous year's Brabham BT23E, backed by a Hewland FT200 transmission. The engine used the 30-series crossflow head with single cam per bank, on the short 800 series block.

So good that Peter takes that car out and uses it. Well done.

Interesting to see this particular car. It is new to me, and I'm no expert of Brabham and the specifics of the cars. In 2019, we were lucky enough to see the Brabham BT30X which was running at the Chateau Impney Hillclimb, in England. The two cars look quite similar. (Probably there are lots of differences in reality.) I believe I am correct in saying that the 30x was the test mule for the Brabham team when they first started with aerodynamics. It was fascinating to see that the 30 x has been maintained in its original form with an American aluminium Buick V8 engine. The chassis still has, several now redundant , "Mounting Tags" for the aerodynamic devices to be fitted to the car. We were lucky to be friends with Mr Alan England (Who has sadly passed away now.) He was possibly, the original aerodynamics designer / (Or one of them.) for Brabham having joined them from the aircraft industry in the very late 1960s. All interesting stuff!

Fantastic - the owner receives a lot of flak on Social Media but we should be glad he is willing to drive it as hard as he does, partly for our pleasure

Agreed, for me it's all about the car, its awesome history, and the fact that we get to see and hear it. :-)

Nice one Glenn. It is a bit of a controversial car with some of the purists. I saw it on the Saturday with JB at the wheel...very impressive.

Thanks mate, I'm a huge fan of all Jack's (& Co) achievements. I've noticed there is a bit of media and controversy about surrounding the original intentions and purpose for the cars original build.

He started to give it more of a squirt toward the end, there's nothing too sluggish about this car.

I got confused . This was the Tasman Series Car that ran in one race . Brabham used the Ford DFV in Formula 1 in 1969 after a disappointing year with the 4 cam Repco V8 in 1968. I think I have this right.

Lucky to drive it, but it's absolutely painful watching the driver feeding the wheel through his hands like he's on his driving test and ramming it into lower gears before the car is ready making the engine scream.

I got to 45 seconds and Peter Strauss started with his BS claims about this being built to be an F1 car so I gave up. This car was built to be a Tasman car.

Regardless of the original build intentions, and any controversy surrounding that, this car is still an epic machine in its own right, created and raced in anger here on our soil in 1969 by an Australian legend of Formula One in Jack Brabham.
