JACK JOHNSON: UNFORGIVABLE BLACKNESS - 9pm, Saturday 21 & Sunday 22 December on PBS America (Virgin Media 243 & Sky 534) ** As part of Ken Burns' Season **
Broadcast over two evenings, Ken Burns's film tells the story of one of the greatest boxers of all time and his refusal to accept the rules of a society that considered him a second-class citizen.
Jack Johnson was born in 1878 in Galveston, Texas. He began boxing as a young teenager in the segregated South and soon made a considerable name for himself by defeating a succession of opponents with ease. Reigning champion James J Jeffries spurned his persistent challenges, choosing to retire undefeated rather than fight a black person. Johnson was not to be denied his ambition, however, and in 1908 he defeated the new champion Tommy Burns to become the first African-American to be crowned heavyweight champion of the world. His success triggered a worldwide search for 'The Great White Hope' to re-establish the superiority of the white race, but it was Johnson's bold personal life that attracted the most hostility. In 1913 he was convicted in what was widely perceived as a sham trial under a law which prevented the transportation of women for immoral purposes. His real crime was to have married a white woman. Johnson fled the country to avoid prison, but returned six years later to serve his time. This is the story of a man who refused to recognise racial differences and who forced America to reconsider its very definition of freedom.

I’ve read the book and seen the video twice . Jack Johnson was made of steel. For an African American boxer achieving what he did is those times was a magnificent accomplishment. For me the bravest African American boxer of all time because of the the he did it. The video and narration were fantastic. Excellent post.

As a Mexican American I can totally empathize with my Black brothers as well as my Native American brothers that we as a people can and will overcome the racism that exists in the United States. We have all served our country to preserve our Constitution. It is waaaay past time that we are treated as equals.

I too am Mexican American, and many in my family served in WW2 (my uncle was killed in the Navy), Korean War and Vietnam. I owe all I have to this country. Racism? It's an ugly two way street. Minorities can be just has hateful as any other race. It exists, and each person needs to look into himself and into his own heart, regardless of his race and choose to love all as brother or not. Holding grudges for wrongs perpetrated decades ago and generation sdoes nothing to curb racism. It begins with forgiveness.

To this day JJ was overrated. While it looked like he had a real gift. Most of his fights were against middle weights, and light heavies of his time. Of course, he looked good, what good hwt wouldn't? He also never fought any blk fighters after he became champ. Why? Maybe there wouldn't have been enough interest, no money, who knows. It just didn't happen. And look what did happen when he fought a mediocre hwt his own size in Jess W. He got his ass kicked. When Jess took him out the myth was destroyed. JJ could not handle a big strong man. As long as the smaller fighters were handed to him, no issue. What would have been the outcome if the top blk fighters would have been able to fight him? His reign would not have lasted, maybe. In any case a lot rode on the fact he was the first blk hwt and a pioneer for those to come.

Presidential pardon, alright. Righteous pardon from a Holy God? This documentary brags about the man's sinful nature. The most important statement would have been wether or not this man received Jesus Christ as his savior. No matter his color, no matter his financial situation, no matter position in society. Were his sins washed away by the blood of the Lamb? Are yours?
