I am 54 now and up until a couple years ago I was still playing with the old Wilson Staff blades from the 80's, I had a 14 handicap and had the irons altered to today's loft and still have my 1-iron in the bag along with a Ping driver and 3-wood. I love having single digit golfers try to hit my clubs, most can't. Oh, I have been in Germany for the past couple years and haven't had time to play. If you really want to see how good you are, take a set of old blades and play a round! :)

absolutely, right. Nicklaus said he had incredible 'timing' that week and, indeed, felt himself 'shut' at the top and he made the adjustment in the downswing. If you look at that shot, he hit a 'slinging' hook in there that short hopped the flag stick. I think Nicklaus' upright action facilitated his downswing adjustments in that he was able to keep his path moving along the target line while he made those minute adjustments to the face angle through impact. Pure genius of the Golden Bear.

@Goynes42 Nobody who didn't see him play can really understand just how great he was. Playing with unpredictable equipment, especially the ball by today's standards, he did everything exceedingly well except his wedge game. I am old enough to have played with persimmon, and the difference from titanium is astronomical. He is the best ever.

@Reginald-Montgomery-Astird-III Жыл бұрын
Lol people acting like the equipment we used to use was somehow rudimentary is funny, it wasn’t the dark ages, balls and clubs by the 60’s and 70’s were not unpredictable at all, they just weren’t made to make the game as easy as possible yet. Some of my favorite clubs I ever used were actual wood drivers with steel shafts, they were also beautiful compared to the monstrosities jutting out of our bags today.
@pb12661
@pb12661 11 ай бұрын
@@Reginald-Montgomery-Astird-III I played them too and they were 10 times harder to hit. You couldn't even get a driver up in the air unless you had 100+ clubhead speed. That's why a lot of players didn't even hit driver. they used 3 woods. Good players!....it WAS the stone ages compared to the equipment of today.

@BoHoVsGolf Jack is known for a fade but he could shape the ball in both directions whenever he liked. He's gone entire tournaments hitting nothing but draws. In 1966 for example, he won the Masters playing nothing but a draw. Also remember that even though he's known for a fade, his ball flight was damn near straight. A fade for Jack only moved about 3 to 5 yards right. A friend of mine played in the 1983 US Open and he watched Jack warm up. Said it was unreal how well Jack could hit it.

He mentions two factors explaining why Woods hit 5 iron to Nicklaus' 1 iron: Different golf balls, different clubs. He leaves out two other factors: Today's 5 iron has the loft of a 1972 4-iron; but even more important is this: IT'S PEBBLE BEACH! THE WIND IS WILDLY DIFFERENT EVERY DAY! Nicklaus needed a 1 iron that day; Woods needed 5 iron a different day. Same clubs, same ball, same wind, Nicklaus was probably longer.

I appreciate the good advice as to using technology to your advantage when it counts, but as a stubborn blade user, I would have loved to seen a crack with a one-iron of the period-if just to illustrate the difficulty and even drive home the case of hybrid-use.

I love the low irons. I use a 2-9 iron set and I am thinking of getting rid of my pitching wedge (which I don't use thanks to my gap wedge) and breaking out my old tommy armour 1 iron that I used to love. Hybrids just feel wrong and I find them extremely hard to back of if you do not need a full shot.

This a great video for many reasons. Well produced, educational, very helpful. My only disappointment was that they did not actually use a 1 iron to recreate the shot. I would like to see a 1 iron shot, not a hybrid club shot. I also think it's too bad people are no longer using 1 irons. I keep using it because it's a cool challenge to see if I can hit it well and I feel like it gives me more control and finesse than a club that does the hitting for me.

First things first, Jack was hitting into a 20+ headwind. Second, Jack said he was shut at the top, and had to hold off the release. Third, his 1 iron had the loft of a modern 2 or even 3 iron, & was probably the length of a modern 2 or 3 iron. Fourth, if you try to hit the old wound balata hard into the wind, it would go straight up into the sky, so he most likely over-clubbed to keep the ball down, Jack say in hid GMW video that he usually over clubs and swings easier into the wind. Sheeeesh.

Hasn't Jack said for nearly forty years that he felt he took the club back a little shut and was then forced to hold on through the shot? The answer is yes and "holding on" wouldn't produce a pull as Mr. Small suggests. This is a neat series concept but it needs to address issues of fact.

His job should be to teach you properly, and he is intead saying it is a bad way as to give you the easy way out. I am more then twice your age and I personally started with a 3 iron and later moved to hybrids. Eventually I moved back to my 3 and 4 irons. I still have one hybrid, but the hybrid is too often used as a crutch for people. If you can hit your long irons confidently then you can hit anything. If you still can't hit your long irons then it means you need work.

I think we've pretty much beat this issue into the ground; why don't you take the last word and then we'll drop it.
