This was the best mushroom identification video I've yet to see. I've often been thrown off by the different features, as they tend to become less defined, or less distinctive, than the written description or photograph when you're looking in the field.

Not only do the gills glow, the mycelium does as well.. I grow them because of this, as I am fascinated by the bioluminescence. The brood bags can be used as a lightsource to read by, in my completely darkened shed. Currently waiting on the next flush. 2 patches in the backyard, one on beech, the other on oak chips. On two nights, The light was bright enough to clearly see them with a half moon. Going from having a fear of mushrooms to growing them in my shed... I saw the light, hehe.

Thank you. This video helped me identify some chanterelle mushrooms I found last week (got a video of them). I also ran them by a trusted source who further assured me. I ate them and they were great! I appreciate your knowledge, and the simplicity with which it is presented.

The forking gills on Chanterelle is a great tip. Adam on "Learn Your Land" channel says the Jack O'Lantern grows on dead wood, while Chanterelle grows in soil under and around trees (another good tip). Nice video and perfect music for it. Thanks.

Thanks. I found these Jack O'Lanterns growing on a trail, there could have been rotten tree roots under the soil perhaps, but location is often an unreliable factor. The gills are, I think, the best way to ID them.

Yes, but that doesn't always hold true because today when Jeepin' there was a cluster of Jack o'lanterns right in the middle of a totally dirt trail. It didn't appear to have any old wood there because it has been a jeep trail for about 20 years.

I just found so of these today & was hoping he would mention in the video - what intrigued me as much was the smell - I couldn't quite place it - thought sort of citrusy - but I LOVED the smell. Luckily - I do not eat mushrooms - so glad I was not tempted. Also read that while they are poisonous - they have some cancer killing qualities!

Very intriguing and it perked my interest especially since I love eating mushrooms. 🍄 I don't think I've ever seen them growing here but I found what you shared about the two different kinds of mushrooms interesting and very informative. It's kind of funny, the Jack O'Lantern which is inedible looks more vibrant and attractive as compared to the common one which can be eaten. 👍👍

Jack O'Lanterns are such an incredible orange color, too bad they are poisonous. Chanterelles are orange too but more of a yellow-orange. I did try to check if the gills glowed in the dark, but I didn't see anything.

Also chanterelles usually do not grow in huge clusters like the jackolantern mushrooms we see here. Chanterelles grow in group, but never seen them connected like these jackos

It depends on the mushroom. Different ones flush at different times of year. Here in the Rockies, Chanterelle is an early fall mushroom, especially after a rain. Good luck.

I never saw any glow either, it could be because I took a cut mushroom and didn't actually re-visit them after dark, but my theory is the after image from staring at a well lit orange mushrooms would look green after turning out the lights.

Just come across this site that refers a very precise - too much precise, if you ask me! - number of glowing mushrooms: 71. If this number is correct is probably the first time a number like that is correct (numbers are very very seldom correct) but it states clearly that there are indeed glowing mushrooms. Which I start to doubt. www.npr.org/2015/03/21/394089178/why-some-mushrooms-glow-in-the-dark en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bioluminescent_fungus_species#Species www.google.pt/search?q=list+of+all+glowing+mushrooms&gws_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=jH7jWcPoD8fwUqCTpaAJ

Yeah I thought the glow might be to attract "pollinators". I will have to read more, there is a lot to digest there, unless of course they are inedible ;)

been told by people that, you have to get very lucky to see most of the ones that can glow, actually glow and in some cases, its so faint you need a moonless overcast night to notice it with your eyes... i have only seen 1 type glow, and they where grown in a friends closet as a project and a pain to keep alive (had to be kept warm and moist but not to warm or to moist...but it was neat seeing them glow, after the class was over he gave them to the instructor who gave them to a "fungus guy" she knew who was super excited and sent him several grocery bags full of amazing mushrooms he either grew himself or collected himself... it was amazing..even a few of our friends who "hate mushrooms" found they liked some of them... one gal bought 4lb of chanterells at 12/lb before a weekend camping trip we took not all that far up river from here... she cant cook and...so the 2 of us who could ended up cooking a shitload of fried mushrooms in our 2 cast iron pans and a cast iron dutch oven, fried chanterelles and potatoes and some onions......amazing... chanterelle omelletes amazing...the fact she spent that much on them because she discovered she loves wild/uncommon mushrooms.....loved it .... anyway...its rare and sometimes also requires very specific conditions to occur. wouldnt surprise me if it is a way to attract night insects to have them spread spores, also wouldnt shock me if alot of those listed only glow under VERY specific condtions or dont...but....hey....never know some may glow because of the radiation they absorb from the ground...mushrooms are good at that... why the wild pigs around chernobyl are so radioactive. ;)
