I loved this! I am a “Jack of all trades, master of none. That’s what got me traveling all over the world installing, troubleshooting and maintaining systems. There were 10 of us that could do anything, and not a college diploma between us. My philosophy has always been “be curious about the world”. It’s what drives me everyday!

I have been unsatisfied with myself for a long time because people always call me the jack of all trades, but whenever I meet someone who is really good at one specific thing which may seem impressive coming from me alone, they are always better than me and I feel disgraceful towards whatever it may be. I have been living by only half this saying for years now trying to specialize in specific things and this just blew my mind. Your life changes every day I guess.

Being a Jack of All Trades is in my nature. Impatient in my youth, I would have been content to excel as a One Trick Pony. But I am thankful now for a great depth and breadth of knowledge, however hard won it may be.

I am a "Jack Of All Trades", myself as in junior high school I took two years of woodworking, and two years of metal shop, BUT MY CLASS was one of the first classes that required boys to take home economics, so I know how to sew, cook and bake as well thanks to that experience, PLUS I took one year of print shop in junior high school, and during that time, I gained an interest in building and flying model rockets, which helped me learn advanced mathematics!! In high school, I took drafting, computer science, electronics, small engine repair, and two years of auto mechanics class!! BUT throughout both junior high school and high school, I took a lot of side jobs working for a contractor who not only did new construction but also remodeled homes, I worked in a professional auto body repair shop! And SINCE I was eight years old I worked in landscaping with my father and grandfather at their side business!! Also in my youth I was an avid Boy Scout until my troop was taken over by my school yard bully's father and I quit the boy scouts just a year (and a couple of awards) short of what would have made me an Eagle Scout! So I have had first aid training THREE TIMES in my life! After school I worked many jobs, though usually in electronics where my skills with metal fabrication and mechanical devices could be used!! BUT I was never really paid well and often found myself earning much less that my contemporaries!!!! Even though I am and was, wildly over qualified for most of the jobs I took!!!!

If you were "one of the first", then you must be older than I am - or your school system was a late comer.. I had home economics in grammar school in Chicago in the 1950s. It was one of several mandatory practical skills (shop) courses that everyone - boys and girls - were all required to take. We learned the basics of electrical wiring, cooking, sewing with a machine (made shop aprons), metal working and pottery. In high school I took 4 years of shop courses: woodworking, foundery, forge, machine, and electrical, two years of mechanical drawing, 4 years of math. It was a "college preparatory high school". My summer jobs high school jobs included working for an industrial roll feed manufacturer, and an appliance manufacturer. Combined with the little I learned in college, it helped me to be a more well-rounded engineer.

No, no sir. Leonardo da Vinci is a really bad example. He was the jack of all trades, master of all! The type you mentioned who go to work and go back and watch TV are not masters of anything btw, they are just okay at doing one thing.

The complete quotation is also misunderstood. A master is someone who has advanced knowledge of something AND a student or apprentice to pass that knowledge on to. A "master of none" is literally a person without a student, not necessarily a person without expertise. A jack of all trades can have a wide range of skills but may not be good at some or any of them, or may be an expert.

to be honest, Ill rather be a Master of One than to be Jack of all Trades.....to be a master at one craft...says something about your determination, work ethic, focus, and ambition.
