Jack Owens (vocal and guitar) and Benjamin "Blind Bud" Spires (harmonica) perform "Can't See Blues," a composite blues of Owens' devising. (Not to be confused with Peetie Wheatstraw's blues of the same name.) Shot by Alan Lomax, Worth Long, and John Bishop at Jack Owens' farm near Bentonia, Mississippi, August 1978. Notice how Spires smoothly gives a straight blues a serious groove for a couple measures then backs off. So good

Got to give it up for that Bentonia, Mississippi sound! That minor tuning, the droning open strings, the fingerpicking all produce that *haunting and hypnotic* quality.

Damn these guys are great. I heard about Jack Owens when I was down in Yazoo City, MS. Bentonia , MS is right near there, down in the delta. Texas is just a little too far away, but your effort to find him gave me a chuckle. Good effort, it would have been nice if you could have found him.

So, just to add a personal perspective: People simply don't understand or believe it, but this does actually happen... During the very early days and years of blues becoming more popular, I'm talking about the 60's, during the incredible resurgence of interest in the delta sound, and rediscovering oc ghe old bluesmen from the 1930's... Guys who recorded those old records, were sometimes still alive, and done still living in the exact same areas they were many years before. Several attempts were made at locating the original students and practitioners of the delta blues, and other forms of blues and hill country music. Some were actually found: Skip James, R.L. Burnside, Sonny Boy Williamson II, among many others. When people found out that these guys were often still around. and you could actually just travel down there and meet up with them, they did. Well, if you look at some of the stories about that, it seems that someone who owned the original recording contracts and music rights didn't want folks to be talking to them. That may sound like BS, but i believe if you look up the story of Lomax himself during his trip to meet with Sonny Boy Williamson II, he was sitting in a bar in the black neighborhood where Sonny Boy was meeting him, and the police showed up, harrassed these guys and made no secret about not wanting them around. "...you better be on your way young man, before something bad happens to you, and you find yourself in a lot of trouble!!" That's the way I heard and read the story. Sonny Boy Williamson II, was not healthy by then, the documentary maker/ recording producer said that when he met him, he repeatedly coughed up blood into a handkerchief. Sonny Boy passed away not long after that. I really believe people who controlled the copyrights to the original records, really screwed these guys out of legitimate business opportunities. Skip James for instance, made $40 for his recordings during the original recording of an album in the 1930's, obviously that record was played by many black music radio stations, and very many copies were sold in the next 30ish years, until around early 1960's, when the folk music tours began spreading in Europe, these guys became superstars over there! That's no exaggeration either, they started touring Europe and Scandinavia, and many found new recording contracts. But, keep in mind, they still returned to their hometown here in the States. Often they had debts, or perhaps people who were not happy about the money they lost when these great musicians started becoming popular once again. Hope that helps to clarify some misconceptions about the history. 😎🇺🇸
