In this week's episode I chat with Sarah Bax Horton, author of a recently published book called "One-Armed Jack: Uncovering the Real Jack the Ripper". Her prime suspect is Hyam Hyams, whose distinctive physical characteristics (including a stiff arm) match period eye-witness descriptions of the killer. She also has a personal connection to the story - her great-great grandfather was a police sergeant in Whitechapel during the Ripper murders.
The U.S. Amazon link to the author's book: www.amazon.com/One-Armed-Jack...

What do you think of Patricia Cornwell’s claims that Walter Sickert was the White Chapel ripper? My Dad’s convinced it was an American guy who’s name he can’t remember but he probably means HH Holmes’s.

I was born in Whitechapel one hundred years after the murders and it was still a pretty grim district when I was born. It must have been a complete nightmare back in 1888. I’ve seen a colourised photo of Hyam Hyams and the man looks pure evil. I’ve also seen a colourised photo of a young Charles Letchmere, another Ripper suspect, and he also looks extremely evil and menacing.

A witness mentioned here identified a man near the Chapman murder site about 30 minutes after it happened. One would think that her killer would have been long gone by then. In any case, being close to the murder site that long after the murder means little.

Maybe her police ancestor was Jack the Ripper. (Kidding!!! However, I have often considered the possibility that JTR was in law enforcement. )

There is a short thriller story using that theory. ("The Hands of Mr. Ottermole" or something. )

Eddowes murder with the men who saw a person always stuck out even in the old books even, and the witnesses keeping back info, the suspect being a relative / same religion theory. She basically said ‘although we know swanson and anderson said it was kosminski, I need to sell a couple of books if I want to continue living in Chelsea.’

Swanson and Anderson didn't have a clue. They were as clueless as Oldfield and Co were a hundred years later in Yorkshire.

Hindsight is great. Swanson and Co investigating the ripper could only go on what little evidence they could collect back then. Crime investigation was in its infancy and they had no clue how to carry out a murder investigation. Believe it or not but there were very few murders in whotechapel

Problem is, we're not sure who Kosminski was.

Swanson said it was Kosminski, Anderson did not, but presumably, Swanson was reflecting Anderson's view. As ohmy said, we don't know who Kosminski was. Neither Swanson nor Macnaghton (who also mentioned Kosminski) supplied a first name.

I wouldn't believe anything Anderson said. He's going by a supposed eyewitness of a supposed suspect that can't be proven to be the killer. We have no idea what Kosminski looked like. I seriously doubt that he had wide shoulders. He was described as emaciated and very thin in asylum records.

dear boss, the mental background translating in these killings, is compelling.. have you / will you please try to get bruce robinson? They all love jack is a way to discern some of the total crap experienced throughout this investigation. With the coroner court and the witness statements, wading through that stuff remains such a fog in all of ripperology. I do love all the theories out there though, whenever i hear a new one, i am so compelled, cant remember which writer says that in their writing about the ripper... always convinced of each of the possible rippers. it's a heck of a ride. From hell, signed,

When looking at the ripper case it’s important to separate FACT from OPINION… There is only one FACT we know for sure….. IT WAS MAYBRICK

@@walkawaycat431 we have physical evidence that he committed the crimes… A diary with information only the killer would have known…. He is the ONLY suspect who could genuinely be charged with the murders….. FACT
