while i agree that human rights should never be violated (duh), i think people need to realise that this isn't new. the same thing happened at the last world cup in russia but people and the media were not nearly as critical of it. i completely agree that fifa needs to heavily regulate these countries but its been happening qatar isn't anything new and yet its getting way more criticism which is giving islamophobic. not to jack ofc but just a comment on the general public, because it is hypocritical when russia 2018 where many central asian and korean migrants died because of working conditions yet the media outrage wasn't anything close to this. same thing with brazil. we need to be critical but i think the spotlight on qatar in western media is because its a middle eastern country not because of human rights when you consider that no country is morally superior (englands kits are made off of underpaid bangladeshi workers) and fifa has a history of this. the criticism towards qatar have propelled them to reforms which is absolutely necessary however i just wish everyone would put this energy on all the previous and future world cups because right now western media are falling back on islamophobia to criticise the nation. no hate to jack but i just wanted to provide this perspective

i agree with what you said about qatar however i have this feeling that whenever something happens in a middle eastern country everyone is so concerned about human rights but no one bats an eye at anything wrong that happens in the western countries. for example, you also visited france, which is a country where muslim people (especially hijabi/niqabi women) cannot exist in peace because of the views of the government on muslim people and islam. of course this doesn't mean i support qatar's views but i think there is a double standard going on...

Thank you so much for mentioning this. Like, as a part of the community plus being an expat and a woman living in UAE (practically same as Qatar), I truly appreciate Jack for taking a stand against Qatar. But also as a Muslim born woman, it's sad how he doesn't even acknowledge how there have been cases of verbal harassment and literal physical aggression towards hijabis in France. Again, being both Muslim and from the community, neither East nor West is safe lol. I constantly joke that I will move to either Arctic Circle or Antarctica with my girlfriend because the polar bears don't give a shit about our sexuality or the fact that she wears hijab.

plus the day he uploads this, a muslim woman was called a slur and then slashed across the face in New York, where he lives, no mention of the USA's, UK's and France's blatant islamophobia (and mistreatment of Muslim women). Plus these countries are not innocent when it comes to migrant labor or migrants period. It would have been useful to not have an orientalist notion of "those" backward people versus "us"

Very well said. For instance I see the western media constantly talk about these issues and even they themselves are supplying other countries with weapons which kills innocent children like we see in Yemen and Palestine, This kind of double-standard really irritates me because I can never understand whether they actually care about human rights in general or they only care when it directly has an impact on them🤷🏻‍♂️

As someone from Qatar who was watching Jack for years this is really sad. It is sad that people will find any issue with the World Cup and make a way to boycott. Qatar is aware of the human rights violations and instead of hiding it under a rug like the west we will say there names. And it is sad when people talk about the problem in the Middle East they talk about them not supporting the LGBTQ+ community rather then talking about the human rights violations that is happening to Middle Eastern in the Gaza Strip and in Yemen. I have seen it in booktalk so many time the sad truth is not everyone will except everyone , especially in a small country like Qatar which most of the population are strongly Muslims. The Qatari people have exited for this occasion for a really long time. it is the first country in the Middle East to host the World Cup.

totally agree. I was really disappointed - every youtuber suddenly has no issue proclaiming their critism of this world cup but it's dead silence and "I don't get political" when it comes to similar or worse issues with either the previous world cup hosts like Russia or current human rights abuses in SWANA, from palestine to Iraq. And every time women's issues are brought up as a woman i just have to laugh, because it is so clear that they see the entire middle east as completely interchangeable. They couldn't mention a single woman on the front lines of change in Qatar because they don't know care to know anything about women in Qatar, not because they aren't visible, and they don't know even the most basic differences between Iran, Syria and Dubai. "Brown" people are one interchangeable unnuanced social issue to them. And it really is no better in the countries vitue signaling right now. it's purely racist and orientalist rhetoric.

Thanks for your disclaimer at the beginning. Just here to remind people that Qatar isn't the only host with dirty hands and this is something we had 12 years to protest against. The next world cup will be held in Canada, Mexico and the US. I don't see the crimes and human rights violations of these countries (past or even very recent ones, which they have plenty of) pitted against them for being hosts. I'm not defending Qatar just wanted to shed light into this double moral, orientalism and low key Islamophobia from some people. Something to think about. Not accusing anyone. Just dropping it here.. Let's just enjoy reading.

I think is a really valid to critique the World Cup and where is being held. However, I do feel that europeans and Americans in general tend to have a double standard in which they only judge some countries. For example, I agree that Qatar is horrible, but so is the country you are now living in, the US. If I had to list all the things the United States did, this commentary would be huge, but even if you only take Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Korea, it's already ten times worse than Qatar. Not to mention the conditions immigrants have to live when trying to cross us borders, to say something contemporary. I think it's really important to criticise Qatar and especially FIFA, although I can't help but notice that that criticism starts and ends in the arabic world.

Hey Jack! I just wanted to say I genuinely adore ur videos and they make my day. I just wanted to comment on what you said about the World Cup and Qatar, this isn’t hate to u at all but I would like to clear something up. Qatar’s separation of men and women’s doors is not at all anything against women! (As an Arab Muslim women, who is also a feminist) take into account that Qatar is a Muslim country, for us Muslim women, we feel much more comfortable with separations, etc. So I find very ignorant when foreigners who don’t know much about Qatar or Islam comment on that. That’s the reasoning behind it and it’s not in anyway against women.

I just wanted to say few things for you Jack amd for everyone else about Qatar (bty my English is so bad ) 1-the western media claimed that there is 600,000 worker died while building the stadiums for the world cup ; however , this number is actually the nuber of the people who died in Qater since they anounsed the the world cup will be Qater . And honey don’t forget the fact that there was a pandemic and people dies. Yet , yes there is some workers who died during the construction process but the number of them is 60 in 10 years and not 600 000 . And i am not here saying that there lives do not mater ;however, Qatar should pay more atention for the safty of the workers Media just want to present Qatar in a way that make it look a bad country because they are not white with blue eyes 2 - the lgbtq community is not banned from attending the games , their are only not allowed to wear the lgbtq flag .And they are not allowed to kiss or have any “physcial interaction “ in public , and this is not for gays but also for straight people. This is agents the islamic religion and in Qatar they are not hating the lqbtq community but just have different culture . And the world should respect them if they want them to respect the rest of the world culture. Western world should stop asking the whole word to follow them , because they are white does not mean their ideas about how to live the world are right . Leave the rest of the world alone . 3- about women rights ? Give me one country that give them their rights ….at least Qatar gives their women rights more than many countries . I don’t know wear did you bring your information but I am sure they are from a wight racist guy or from wikipedia . I really respect you Jack and love watching your videos but you should know the true before judge people and say that they don’t care about humans right.

OMG the whole time I was rooting for araidne cause it was one of the only books I had read and i loved it, but I was sure you were going to kick it out at some point. I'm so happy it won, it's actually one of the few books on my tbr that I read before you recommended it.

such a fun video! i was inspired by this and did it with my top 32 books of the year and came out at the end with swimming in the dark, open water, the mountains sing and lessons in chemistry - an incredibly hard choice but i went for the mountains sing as my top book! :)

SO much fun. Coincidentally I just finished Circe yesterday which I LOVED and had pulled out Ariadne to read next so now I'm really excited to crack on with it! Talking to a friend yesterday about how odd it is that I love Greek mythology so much but am really not fond of fantasy, even the top rated. Why is that? I think you're the same Jack.

There’s an 86% chance you won’t give a hoot, but this inspired me to make my own World Cup of Books video! And I used books from the countries that actually made it through to the knockout stages. Thanks so much for the inspiration 🙌

If your comments about Qatar don't remain the same for the next World Cup with US being 1/3 host for all their human rights violations, it's just plain hypocrisy.

look i am never gonna defend the US for their policies but if we’re talking about football and football players and other people working in fifa do not feel safe in Qatar i think it deserves consideration. I don’t think extremist religious ideology should be forced onto sports. like be fr i don’t think queer players feel the same level of fear in the US as they do in Qatar even after all the shit that’s been going on
