Jackals kill gazelle fawn

Five black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) attack and kill a hidden gazelle fawn. Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya.
Gazelle infants spend most of their first weeks of life hidden in vegetation as a protection against predators. In this case, a nearby group of jackals noticed the fawn and captured and ate it. Jackals are the primary predators of young fawns at this site, and jackal hunts like this one were a common sight during my dissertation research. Often though, jackals will walk right by a fawn without even knowing it's there. In this case, the fawn was not so lucky.

@@Defender78 Fawns are hidden by their mothers to EVADE PREDATORS; That Fawn was UNLUCKY, most Fawns are LUCKY to escape Predators' search!!!!!

@@maxvoss9070 How any creature can be a useless one?? Every existing life matters in nature and there is not any one more precious that other, all are equal in eyes of mother nature. From an ant to elephant or whale I mean it.. just put a good pressure on your empty skull to process it through. You may make something outta it

Thanks! I've got several other videos with black-backed jackals on my channel. My dissertation was about maternal and antipredator behavior of Thomson's gazelles - basically the behavioral strategies that moms use to try to prevent what happens in this video!

Poor jackals. They are predators themselves but living in fear. Just small noise will scare them, making them alerts of bigger predators (lions, hyenas, etc.)

With as intelligent as predators can be, i just wondered if the "tourists on safari" tip off the predators to where the prey is. All for that perfect shot and experience. Just a thought.

I would guess this is not a huge issue as usually tourists are clustered around predators, not prey.

Usually these safari trips enlist the help of a helicopter which reports the sightings back to base. Also herd animals have multiple trails which are use for migration and these trails usually don’t change suddenly so trackers and scouts familiar with the land are able to locate the herd pretty easily.
