The world feels distinctly dimmer today, doesn't it. He was such a huge part of a 60s & 70s childhood; such a reassuring and entertaining presence in our lives... a TV friend to all, and a TV Dad that many of us needed. It's more like losing a member of the family than I care to admit!

I now watch Bernard with my 3 and 4 year old kids in Old Jack's Boat on Cbeebies and they love it. Still as great as ever.

Bernard Cribbins reading Joan Atkin , brilliant storytelling, all the voices bring life off the page and into the here and now, My children grew up listening to the audio versions of these stories.

A brilliant show. But I have a great fear most of the Jackanory episodes from the 60s and 70s were destroyed by the BBC, to 'make space'. Just like they did with Dad's Army and Dr Who.

One of the reasons that English literacy in primary schools is poor these days is because kids these days don't watch other people telling stories any more. These old educational BBC kids shows like Jackanory, Words and Pictures etc. Should be used for literacy in the National Curriculum.

A good example of the talented "Mr.Cribbins", on a really popular show. Which he revisited many times, I think, proof that he also enjoyed it. If you do not mind, I will "Add To" my page. :)
