When Joel Siegel first did a review for The Karate Kid (1984), he pronounced his name "MA-Key-O" instead of "Ma-chee-o". The latter pronunciation was the way Macchio himself pronounced his name, but the former is the proper Italian pronunciation. Siegel was called in at 4:00 am the day of his review's airing to correct the pronunciation. He later expressed annoyance at being called in at 4:00 am in the morning because Macchio "didn't know how to pronounce his own name."

Macchio admitted in an interview in the last 2 years that the other way is the proper way but he has always pronounced it the Ma-chee-o way.

As a martial arts fan (nerd?), I always found it odd to call the Chinese/Jackie Chan movie Karate Kid. Karate is literally a Japanese (Okinawan) martial art. 8:06 EXACTLY!!!

Karate has it's roots in Kung Fu. The pioneers of karate originated from Ryukyu kingdom (later renamed Okinawa) due to Japanese occupation. Their island was in close proximity to China - the founders of karate traveled to mainland China to learn calligraphy culture & martial arts. Long story short: Kung Fu & Karate are just different sides of the same coin. 👊🥋

@@jaustmike9001 Ah yes! I can see you didn't read all of my last comment! You just cherry picked bits & pieces of it just to start a pointless argument with a stranger lol.Yes there's some minor differences, but their techniques are the same when you look closely, the distinction is that Kung Fu is fluid, whilst Karate is rigid. They are different sides of the same coin meaning: Karate has it's origins & roots in Chinese martial arts/Kung Fu, Karate is the descendant art. Just because one is a Kung Fu practitioner, that doesn't mean they are a black belt in Karate by default - that statement is just ignorant, you want a black belt? You must join a specific martial arts school & train rigorously & work hard for it! All that being said: at the end of the day: a punch is a punch, a kick is a kick.

You should also checkout a film with Ralph Macchio from the 80’s called Crossroads. He plays a classical guitar playing protege whose true passion is blues guitar and is determined to find a long lost blues song left by an old blues musician and enlists the help of a former blues musician to help find the song and mentor him along the way. There is also a surprising supernatural element in this film. This film also has one of the best showdowns in film history at the end of the film. A definite must watch.

The problem with Haan is that Chan doesn’t pull off the Yoda effect like Miyagi did. You don’t look at Chan and say that old dude can’t kick anyone’s ass.

I don't know about this... As much as I love both Karate Kid and Cobra Kai and Jackie, a mashup of the 2 universes doesn't feel very promising. You can also tell in the video that Jackie is way more enthusiastic about the project than Ralph, who might feel that Jackie is just piggy backing on the success of Cobra Kai, and this sequel of sorts could very well undo the greatness of Cobra Kai as a whole (failed sequels or finale can undo an entire series, as we've seen in Game of Thrones), so I'm a bit dubious about this announcement.

I’m sorry but Cobra Kai is far from “greatness” lol. Jackie will backpack this film for sure due to his dedication and love for the arts, and the fight scenes will definitely be gas. It’s already in good hands even if Ralph tries to phone it in.

@@343GuiltySparker you don't have to be sorry if you didn't like the show. I did, and a lot of people do as well, for various other reasons than it having good fight choreographies. It's an actual story, well written, with great characters. Does it feel goofy and a bit cartoony at times ? Sure. But hey, the source material is Karate Kid, one of the cheesiest most 80'est material of the 80's. And being able to translate it to modern audience while keeping its identity is quite a rare miracle that not a lot have done right.

Cobra kai is excellent for what it is. But S4 showed cracks and later seasons were cracked and committe written. The 2010 one unfairly hated, it was excellent. If ralph feels he is sole decider of everything in the universe, then jackie is better off not getting into it.

Also, The Outsiders is amazing. Stars C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, and Diane Lane. Have the Kleenexes with you though when you watch it; just fair warning.

Loved the OG Karate Kid, but I also think the new Karate Kid gets flak that is un deserved, definitely worth a watch guys Also the movie could be the product of the fusion of the two stories, Cobra Kai and The New Karate Kid, hopeful here :)

Looking forward to a " Kung Fu Kid" movie that it'll make sense (other than a paycheck) for Jackie to be in😏. They should make it a real multiverse thing and have Chan also play Daniel LaRusso🤔. 5:19 - Always room for an Achara Miyagi - the very attractive, very much younger niece or something of Pat Morita👍.

I wonder how they could play this I mean Daniel is Daniel, but Mr. Miyagi is Mr. Han? I mean how can they tie these 2 universes together neither of them need a mentor unless Daniel gets a new Hong Kong Bully and must learn Kung Fu to beat him because Karate doesn't work west of japan... Also randomly: Does this mean they officially made the 2010 movie canon?

"Shimpo Miyagi was a fisherman from Okinawa, who one day drank strong sake and fell asleep on his boat after failing to catch fish on a day with both strong wind and strong sun. He arrived and woke up off the coast of China, where he married a woman and had a two kids. Shimpo also learned karate and 10 years later brought that knowledge back with him as he returned to Okinawa"

They can't be connected as established by their own rules. Jackie Chan is an actor within their universe, and so is his Karate Kid movie.

they can because both Cobra Kai and this movie can be a sequel to the original Karate Kid, but in different timelines which means this movie wouldn't be connected to Cobra Kai, only to the original movies

I thought I'd be happy about this announcement but I strangely am not. I am a fan of the OG Karate kid (and the show) but not of Jackie Chan's "Kung-fu kid" (it was meh). I wish they could go back to being Japanese instead of Chinese and embrace Japanese martial arts culture instead.
