But Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee are both from Hong Kong and the official language (dialect) there is Cantonese. So yeah Bruce Lee understood Jackie Chan as their mother tongue was for both Cantonese. I guess Jackie had to learn mandarin if he wanted to work in China and everywhere in Asia. Actually nowadays, almost all Hong Kong big stars do speak both Cantonese and Mandarin.
