Procreate actually has a feature for gray scale called “gradient map” where you can put in colors for certain tones of gray so you don’t need to use layers modes and the colors turn out very vibrant. I don’t know how to explain it just writing it down but its very cool to mess with. Im currently studying Bo Chen’s artwork and splash art for league of legends in general and I am using gray scale and this procreate method.

the gradient map is good for checking values, but painting in colors and then turning it into grays and still painting over it doesn't really help you understand values, it's just a way to avoid really learning the fundamentals

I would LOVE to see you critique the Hazbin Hotel character designs - I love the show, but I've seen a lot of discussion online about the various failings or successes of the characters, and the characters all have a lot they're representing in their designs. There are a bunch of scenes, especially where more than one main character is on screen in a closeup, where the characters feel like they're so busy the entire frame is just a jumble of sharp lines. A bunch of the characters feel more like OCs than characters in a multimillion dollar project. I'm just super super curious what your opinions are!

I’m almost exclusively do my digital paintings in greyscale, it by FAR helps me sort the ideas and values of an image way faster. But I usually do backgrounds/landscapes when I paint, not often people

The Greyscale method is my favorite method for painting! I love how I can create incredibly fine color variations that I normally wouldn’t be able to pull off with more traditional methods. It also forces me to focus on values and shading, which I sometimes struggled with in bigger paintings.

I just did a piece in greyscale (forcing myself to work on values and hard vs soft edges) and when I finally got to color it with different layer modes and gradient maps I was ready to be done. I think it can be a great process but I’m still trying to find ways to make it work for me.

Another great video. I’ve tried this method before and have also found it frustrating for a couple of reasons. 1. The color drift you get with the multiply layers as you found is an issue and trying to dial it in is off putting. 2. I struggle with the tedium of having all those layers and having to do a full b&w value painting. In my opinion I think this method works best for comic artists who pencil and color their own work or a colorist working over the pencils/inks of another artist who has already laid down the values. I’m going to experiment with a shorthand version that is just a sketch with loose block in of values a multiply layer that again is loose just to get some basic color on to those values and a third layer for the final paint to dial in the overall painting and colors as well as the brush work. Shouldn’t need more than 3 layers maybe 4 at the most.

Girl you chose such a complicated process 😅but I'm glad it worked for you! I'd have given up and merged everything halfway through lmao. I've been eagerly following your portrait progress because I'm kind of doing a similar thing right now, and I can really see your improvement! The forms are much more defined and 3-dimensional than when you started out. I don't know if you've tried this, but I find that paint + blend combo brushes help me a lot with portraits because it kind of keeps the process dynamic🤔. Keep it up Jackie! Looking forward to seeing more 😊

I dont think you should be critiquing other ppls art if youre just gonna trace the image. You say "its not a drawing test its a painting test", well drawing is the ground work for painting. If you keep tracing youre never going to get better. Just my opinion.
