Welcome to this weeks woodturning video:

That turned out beautiful! 👍👍👍 I do a lot of my staining with coffee and other organic/natural juicy berries and fresh grass... I figure if it won't come out of your clothes for several washes it will probably do fine on my carvings! 🤔😵‍💫🙄🎨💁👍👍👍 The nice thing about using coffee is that it is readily available everywhere for free. Coffee also cuts well with 97-99% alcohol and can create deeper penetration on some woods... definitely do a scrap test as 99% alcohol will remove some natural colors as those pigments are easily extracted... however I have never disliked my stains, it's just that some are more pronounced! 😳😵‍💫🙄🤨🤔 Also wrapping your item with a rag soaked in concentrated hot coffee and left to dry leaves a deeper and stain looks great too... again pre-check with a scrap for warping or twisting. Many of my totems are hand-size, so dropping them in a pot and left to soak overnight or for a few days gets the stain deeper into the grain. I also stain my carvings after doing the knife-shaping, but before the lettering, this way the lettering (down with a gouge) goes below the surface and reveals some lesser stained grain... this is okay as the lettering is always finished either with pyro or painted (you have to pyro or paint each letter again after you carve them out).... then oil the project like in the video! Coffee stains and oil protection works well together! 👍👍👍

Just wondering. Does the smell of coffee ever remain. I can't drink it but love the smell ! It would be nice to have an item that just gave off a nice level, rather than the god awful 'air fresheners' that burn my nostrils and eyeballs?!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge in the subject. It’s all fascinating and il definitely be trying some natural stains.
@RuneCarverLLC
@RuneCarverLLC Ай бұрын
@@vickiep4217 Hmmm... idk 😳🤔💁 I think because there is so little remaining on the product the aroma goes away quickly compared to when it's freshly put on.... plus the oils are put on as well and this cuts the aroma significantly (but not everything needs a sealing oil or wax). I can imagine that if you had a retail shop and many items are freshly stained with coffee there may be a faint aroma... maybe, "hopefully!". ❤️👍👍

@Ass_of_Amalek
@Ass_of_Amalek 24 күн бұрын
pomegranate red is not at all durable, it's not suitable as a stain. if you want natural stains, look into natural dyes with proven light-resistance in traditional textile use, and how to use dyes and mordants on wood, and how to even stain absorption over different grain orientation surfaces (such as previously applying a 2-5% hide glue or gelatin seize, or maybe applying a pore filler paste that's not repellant to the following dye's solvent (or also the mordant's). natural bright reds can be achieved either relatively complicated but likely more light-fast with madder root and a mordant, or as easily as by just applying an ethanol tincture with alkanna root.
