Quite hard to win back your rule when you're deposed by your own military forces. And when we come in contact with litterary sources, such as Machado de Assis, the people were not really in the mood to fight for him, or for the new-born republic for that matter, no one really cared as the transition went smoothly as the real power was kept in place with the rural elites, just a change of the figure head of the state in fact.

@@marceloalmeida3850 in fact the Brazilian navy offered to help Dom Pedro II to retake the throne, besides the population supported him, he would have a lot of help, but he insisted that he did not want to see the Brazilian blood spilled in his name. In addition, three years after the 1889 coup, a Brazilian admiral threatened to bomb Rio de Janeiro if the current president did not leave the throne, as the first years of the republic were very violent, with many civil protests.

@@luccamonteiro6774 A instabilidade dos primeiros anos da República é muito mais choque entre as oligarquias regionais, notadamente em seu exemplo, um choque interno entre os militares, do que pressão popular de um apego monárquico e, novamente, isso torna-se evidente pela ausência de uma mobilização ou sequer comoção popular por um restauração, principalmente na cidade que abrigava a Corte, o que denuncia o estado geral da monarquia brasileira em seu fim. Poderia haver um apego pela figura propagandeada de um imperador intelectual e gentil, mas não havia mais apreço à monarquia do que a república. A negação dessa realidade histórica é catarse das falhas republicanas pela projeção de um glorioso passado monárquico que nunca existiu, assim escusa-se a responsabilidade de projetar soluções reais.

@@marceloalmeida3850 it was just a small part of the Army that rebelled. They exiled him within a day so they wouldn't have much time to organize. The Navy, the people and the majority of the Army where still loyal. I wonder if he knew what this shithole would look like in a hundred years if he'd still not fight.

and the republicans, not the party, the guys who overthrew the monarchy, in 2 years made the inflation that never went above 2% in the empire jump to 50%, in 5 years to over 100%, they reduced the right to vote and tried at all costs to ''whiten'' Brazil, established a dictatorship that would kill anyone who went against them, all this to a few years later several of the republican leaders speek in favor of the monarchy, such as Ruy Barbosa saying that he cried when he saw the emperor leave and that he should apologize to God for what he did.

@@cseijifja Getúlio Vargas did some good things, like turning oficial the womans right to vote, the "work passaport", and some other things. But he just react against the germans U-boat attacks almost in the end of the war and by the pressure of the people; Before the US pressure to Brasil join the war, he was trying to be an allie to Germany; And the fact that he loved fascist governments. But he was much like in the middle, being a "secret" facist, but still caring about your people.

@@cseijifja yeah he was a great leader, some may even consider him better than Pedro, but he is also very controversial due to a multitude of factors(his fascist tendencies, the fact that he has betrayed several political allies, some corruption scandals, etc.). Anyway, the fact that Brazil works a little today is because Vargas managed to fix a good part of the sh*t done by the republic.

I know that is kinda bizarre, however there's a explanation, the new constitutional government of Portugal didn't liked the elevation of Brazil from colony to Kingdom, all Spanish colonies were becoming Republics, so Pedro I might have done it to preserve the unity and dynastic rule of Brazil

Fun fact: Even though the republic marked the downfall of Brazil as a country, and was mostly led by slave owners and corrupt politicians, we learn that the proclamation of the republic was a beautiful and revolutionary event that set Brazil "free" from the "evil authority" of the monarchy... yeah

Adding some interesting facts: In one of his trips, that Pedro II visited US, the journal New York Herald appointed him as an ideal presidential candidate for the USA, furthermore he was the most popular foreign leader back then, the people were always fascinated by his majestic character. The American Geographical Society held a special meeting with Pedro II. While giving his speech, the poet Bayard Taylor said Pedro were a friend of the American people and didn’t really appear to be a foreigner. Consequently, the Brazilian Monarch received 4000 votes in the 1876 US election, ONLY IN PHILADELPHIA, even though he wasn’t an actual candidate. According to Teresa Cribelli, assistant professor of history at the University of Alabama, Dom Pedro II's visit quickly fell into oblivion in the United States. Nevertheless, the Emperor's passage through North America would have resulted in some benefits for Brazil. The first telephone line in the country was installed at his initiative in 1877. Appreciating new technology, Dom Pedro met the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, at the Philadelphia Exhibition. According to the teacher, the emperor was also inspired by the public education system in the United States to implement free education to all children in Brazil, regardless of income.

He's the only historical figure I know that fits into that whole "benevolent and righteous leader" in fantasy stories for real. He envisioned a future where Brazil would be prosperous, with huge potential for scientific progress and with an educated and content population, but TO THIS DAY, after he was gone, the country is still ruled by corruption, poverty and ignorance no matter the ideology at power.

Brasil and Argentina are one of the most tragic cases of missed potential. Both countries were, at one point, bastions of prosperity in Latin America and both were among the richest countries in the world (Argentina was the richest in 1895) and it all eventually came crashing down due to mismanagement and the inability to bounce back from the Great Depression

Maybe come here one day. If you're careful to avoid tourist traps and places with high crime that the politicians and the endless cycle of perpetuated violence, you can have a really good time while feeling like you're in paradise. Paradise, that's how I describe where I live. It's so peaceful that it's boring 90% of the year.

It's kind like watch Star Wars backwards and reversed. There was the Return of Jedi, when Darth João VI and Pedro Skywalker fight for the independence of Brazil. If you take in account that the Templar order (wich are basically the equivalent of a real life jedi order) fleed to Portugal when Clement V (wich is basically emperor Palpatine) disband the order (order 66, anyone?), and this lead Portugal to be the main power in the times of the discovery, because the survivors of the purge change the name for order of Christ, which are the direct responsibles for such small nation like Portugal, become a super power at that time. @Manuel Leão Isso que vc apresentou é uma interpretação possível, Manuel. Dado o histórico dele de zelo pelo povo não me parece muito romantizado que ele de fato não quis uma guerra civil aqui. Ele viu de perto o açougue que virou os EUA com a guerra civil deles. E outra, ele "se aposentou" na pobreza. Me parece um pouco estranho ele abrir mão do luxo daqui pra isso. Enfim, duas interpretações possíveis. A que apresentei pra mim faz um pouco mais de sentido

@Manuel Leão Eu já tinha pensado nisso e concordo em partes. Ele estava no fim da vida, e ele próprio achava que a monarquia estava com os dias contados. Nem de longe tinha a disposição para lutar pelo trono de sua filha. Todos os intelectuais e jornalistas que ele liberou o criticavam, e criticavam a monarquia enquanto enalteciam a república. Talvez essa apatia dele era pensando que o melhor para o Brasil era deixar os brasileiros se governarem sozinhos que derramar sangue por um trono. Ele colocou o seu orgulho acima da necessidade do país, e não seria o ultimo bragança a fazê-lo: Anos depois o Dom Pedro Henrique, seu bisneto recebeu a oportunidade da junta de por um fim ao regime militar de 64 e coordenar uma redemocratização do país. Ele declarou que só retomaria o trono se houvesse aclamação popular e o povo por conta propria se mobilizasse para esse sentido.

Some people say Pedro II was just tired by the time the republic was proclaimed, and honestly, I totally buy that idea. Imagining how much pressure he must have been put on since early childhood and how much it must have affected his development as a person is very hard for people with a normal upbringing.

Not true that Pedro II didn't care about preparing his daughter, Isabel, to become empress. They did discuss lots of politics, he gave her a lot of intelectual autonomy and she was invested in many political moves, most importantly the abolition of slavery.

Bonifácio was actually the founding father of Brazil and the one who raised Pedro II as his tutor, and he had reason when slandering Pedro I who was a bon vivant and hedonist that didn't want to rule at first, later in his life he repented and asked Bonifácio to take care of his only son before going to Portugal to free his people from his totalitarian brother.

Yeah. Pedro I was not a very good king or Emperor. His only major achievement was declaring independence of Brazil from Portugal against his father who was another useless king who supported it. In Portugal, Pedro was simply a traitor who should have not interfered in a country he no longer had anything to do with, by causing a war against his own people and against his brother who by law should have been the rightful king. It caused a huge mess in the process that was felt until the end of the monarchy.

@@lunaticoni Misguided, though. The Prince is full of shit, riding on Pedro II good reputation as an argument for a system as if every monarch would be like him. Personaly, his whole argument of "My family is entitled to rule, its a right granted by god" gives me the creeps. Sadly, Brazil has never been a true democracy, we don't know how to be one yet. All we've done since is cycle between different forms of dictatorships and some periods of pretending to be a democracy.

I mean, I have no love for monarchies, and I much preffer a democacy system. But it does HURT my heart seeing such a great human being like Pedro II achieving greatness on his own and have it taken away. But again, if wasn't for the monarchic system, he would probably do what he needed to do and live happily after being a extremely prestigious teacher. So, while monarchy was great for Brazil, it was only because it was Pedro II on the throne, but at the same time, it was a curse for him. I can't even begin to imagine what's like being born with a duty so strong you need to sacrifice everything you want to the greater good of your people, while having close to no emotional support whatsoever, since he was mostly all by himself his entire life. It was cruel.

Fuck democracy, it weakened the country's infraestructure so much it gave way for a mafia state to be formed around its "untouchable image". Democracy can never work properly in underdeveloped countries like Brazil, its not like Europe and the US became the dominant powers as democracies. Most brazilians just want to live a quiet life without being dragged to misery by a mafia state driven by colonialist politics.

funnily enough, here on Brasil, plenty of ppl think that the monarchy was utterly horrible and that the forecoming republic ( which still perdures, kinda) is a great thing. the monachy wasn't perfect, for sure, but god is the republic weird and flunked

As a Brazilian and an admirer of the Brazilian monarchy, I'm in love with your video. Great abstract of the best Brazilian in history. Around here, his history is forgotten, it's not teach on public schools, he's not remembered in parades or anything like that. If you admire him you are seen as a reactionary who wants a dictator in rule or something along those lines. But for those who know the history, it's common sense to say that we didn't deserve him. Also, your portrayal of his daughter, I don't know, kinda inaccurate. Of course, she wasn't prepared for a political life, but she was loved among the people and respected. A devout catholic, there are some families in Brazil who said they were blessed with miracles because of her.

The 1889 coup was influenced by positivistic ideas that not only opened the doors to the caudilhos from the rest o Latin America in Brazil, but would also encourage the military to intervene in Brazilian politics to this day. It was also in 1889 that Ruy Barbosa created the hyperinflation that would plague the country for a whole bloody century. All of this, accompanied by the setback in the industrialization process, the loss of freedom of speech and freedom of the press makes 1889, easily, the worst year in Brazilian history.

It surely sucks bud, but we missed amazing opportunities lately , brasil is being screwed up really hard lately. I would pick as the biggest mistake was Lula reelection 2006, what was supposed to get worst in 2015 during the 'car wash operation' which was probably the biggest corruption scandal in the world.

@@PuroNonsense There is nothing regular in that process, in fact, it only happens in Latin America and Africa. We were on our way to become the exeption but alas. Also, not all contries are republics. And you can only consider the 2006 election a mistake if you think Alckimin would be a better president, i honestly doubt it would be much different especially if you consider that the congress was a shithole in 2006, even more than it is today.

Yea just a correction. Pedro wasn't the one to officially abolish slavery, his daughter was. She was actually a very proeminent figure in the empires sunset years, rulling over Brazil when Pedro became too sickly and tired to do it. Also the whole slavery thing was a bit more complicated, but overall pretty great video

Virar uma republica não vai mudar nada, o Líder é muito mais importante. Se fossemos por Dom João VI por exemplo estaríamos na mesma merda que atualmente: Sendo governados por um covarde. O que podemos ter certeza é que os mesmos inimigos de Dom Pedro II, o exercito e o acumuladores de terras ainda não os inimigos da atualidade e trabalham ativamente para se enriquecer e enfraquecer o brasileiro.
