I bought this album the day it came out - Sept 16th, 1997. This album is filled with talent, beauty, and tears. It was the first album where she really allowed her fans to see inside her heart.

Jack, this is one of the most personal songs Mariah has ever written. She told us that it is about being biracial from top to bottom. At the beginning of her career she took several punches from people saying "she is not admitting that she is black". She never did not recognize what she is, she always said "my father is black Venezuelan and my mother is Irish". People focused on the issue of being black and Venezuelan because they clearly couldn't understand the African American side and the Venezuelan and Irish side. But what do people want? Want a sticker on the cover of her album ?! She has never performed this one live and it is a fan favourite!

Yes! The public really tried to paint her as white and/or say that she didn't claim her black side. Which couldn't be further from the truth, she ALWAYS said she was biracial, always had black band members, black backup singers, black dancers.

@@nh2201 I dont think we're exaggerating, no one said it hindered her success lol. Just that in the beginning, they did try to make her seem white, she said this herself. And that it was asked multiple times what her race was. Once butterfly came out, a lot of people started to joke like oh now she wants to act like she's black because she was working with rappers and such but she always had black people around her, her band, backup singers and choirs, and dancers. At least that was my point, anyway 😊

@@got2bjosh Im having the bridge tatted on my arm. I remember reading the lyric sheet and crying at 14. The woman was giving my language to feelings and experiences that I didn't yet know how to express.
