Not very far-sighted though when you think about it. How much money would McGregor have made with that attitude? Maybe one tenth of what he actually made?

@@EmpiricalPragmatist They would still pay to watch him fight because they hate him and want to see him lose. The same reason people called Floyd Mayweather boring and then paid for his PPV. As much as people today hated Floyd. Jack Johnson was FAR more hated in his time.

8:44 It's fascinating how even on the grainy, silent, hundred-year-old film it's still plain as day that Johnson is making some smartass remark as he turns to walk to his corner. "Seeya next round, Tommy. Take care of yourself now."

It would be extraordinary to have a breakdown of using his technique in mma (especially bicep tie clinch + uppercut)

Great video. didn't try to sound too technical, nice and simple. Jack dempsey was a master of the clinch, often landing his huge left hook and uppercuts with one over or underhook.

Johnson clinch game was very crafty certainly had some wrestling knowledge. He was such an interesting character. Love the unforgivable Blackness documentary which you can find on KZfaq.

I am in love with knee and elbow strikes (inspired by Jon Jones's collapsing elbow strikes against wrist control, Buakaw's clinch knees and Muangthai PK Saenchai, 2014's Fighter of the Year's rolling elbows and elbow uppercuts) and have practiced some judo and wrestling and I just wish some MMA fighters would combine Jack Johnson's guard/hand trapping and clinch games along with the muay thai clinch and a healthy dose of judo and folk style wrestling.

fascinating-elbow control stifles punches as well, but concedes the inside line-I can't think of a wing chun block which entails grabbing the bicep-nice discussion
@rippedup45463 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you use the web of your hand, between the thumb and index finger. Place in the crook of the elbow and that stifles many punches. I learned that from Rodney King, founder of the Crazy Monkey Defense Program. His boxing trainer was old school, Willy Towheel.

Kinda of funny how many of the greatest fighters, acknowledged by boxing purists, use the clinch, but fans try to discredit it. I love the sweet science.
@Luigi-tv3fs14 күн бұрын
boxing fans discredit it, not mma fans. simply because it's frowned upon in boxing but glorified in mma.

@Jack Slack , I just finished reading Jack Johnson's autobiography "In the Ring and Out". I was very surprised to learn how often he trained with wrestlers and even competed in legit wrestling tournaments sometimes! Think it's related? Was planning to cancel my fightpass sub. Now I'm going to have to join your Patreon. Thanks!
@1thelastmystic7 жыл бұрын
Adam Kahane definitely related. Look how good Cormier is at uppercuts in the clinch. The clinch is a wrestling thing for sure
@joshuasasfire27597 жыл бұрын
Adam Kahane they used to let the clinches go back in the day kind of like they do in Muay Thai today. Those old school boxers had to know how to wrestle.
@ClubbChimera6 жыл бұрын
Yes and it is worth remembering that Johnson fought in an era that had just transitioned from bare-knuckle fighting. Pre-gloves boxing not only allowed the clinch it allowed above-the-waist throws (as they do in Greco-Roman Wrestling). I find it very interesting that Jack Slack also points out Johnson's circling jab. It is comparable to Roberto Duran's same technique several years later, which was used to bridge a clinch and fight inside.
