I just stumbled onto this posting. I grew up on Jackson Browne. I was at Merriweather Post Pavilion that night. It was The Pretender Tour. He played and recorded "Running on Empty" (after a break, Jackson came on stage alone, at the piano, said: "Id like to play I've never played in public before .. ". The crowd was quiet and listening. When he sang "when the lights go down and we hear that sound and we remember why we came ... " the stage exploded in light, the band kicked in (Russel on the drums, Rosemary in backing vocals), the entire crowd in the amphitheater immediately jumped up. They closed with The Load-Out / Stay. Both cuts are on the album. That night was a lifetime memory!

The guy on the slide guitar (who also sings a verse of Stay) is David Lindley. My wife calls him the most famous musician you never heard of and he's worth YouTubing. Lindley is a virtuoso on the slide guitar and fiendishly talented on a horde of other instruments. His concerts are absolutely wonderful . Take a listen if you get a free moment.

The entire Running on Empty album is one of the best concept albums done. It opens with Running on Empty and ends with this, and every song is about life as a touring musician. The entire thing was recorded on the road, some on stage, and some in hotel rooms and on the bus and backstage. It's so good as an entire album

Absolutely LEGENDARY. Mythical. Takes one back to an era when stars were foremost musicians and commited with their art. That's what Jackson Browne was throughout his career.

Great song that always chokes me up. I especially like the "Stay" refrain. It reminds me of the early 60s. (I'm 65 now) My cousin had a 45 rpm of Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs doing Stay. I wore it out. I think at that time it was the shortest record to make it in the top ten as it was only 1 minute and 38 seconds long. That may be part of the reason I couldn't get enough of it. Love you guys!

Attended a J. Browne concert in the early 80s. Lawn seating at our local fairgrounds. A cool breeze toward the beginning of Fall.....right around sunset. I had a great spot, seated on the grass about 30 feet from the stage. All I can remember though....was this girl returning from the concession stand. She was carrying two large beers, and she tripped over someone & spilled one of those beers on ME. Of course, I hadn't brought a jacket & was shivering in a soaking wet tee shirt thru most of the concert.

@Kel-n-Rich YO !!!!! Me Mark!! So happy you grabbed this one!! As usual it is SOOOOOO much fun seeing Kel's reaction which is genuine and accurate. Thanks again for picking it. Now my mission is to get you folks to co-react (I'm 99% certain you've never heard it, Rich) to my Jefferson Starship request (it's on your list) for "Awakening". As stated previously, it's kind of proggy in construction and delivery but my main thrust is the lead guitar work in the second half of the song. It TRULY compares to absolutely any other lead piece I know of...... and I know A LOT of them. In fact, I would ask/challenge any and all commentators here to also go and give this song a listen and, if you agree with me, say so to KnR. My next challenge would be to Rich specifically and that would be to give the whole album (Freedom at Point Zero) a listen straight through. It's one of those that you don't have to touch once you start it. You should recognize at least two songs on it (Jane and Rock Music) so it's not completely unfamiliar territory for you. My last challenge from before still stands ..... if I'm wrong about "Awakening" I will happily have breakfast delivered to you at your convenience from a local to you establishment that does so. See, the thing is, I know my money is safe .... I'm THAT confident. Again, if you do pick it, send me an email and I will shoot one back with tidbits of knowledge surrounding it. Take care you two. Mark, Detroit suburb.

Starship? Why I remember when they first began they could hardly afford their Airship. But they got big and rich, great songs and tours, bought themselves a Starship to tour around on. Much safer that way. Yeah would really like to hear me some Jefferson Airp...Starship. With new and improved Photon Drive for efficiency and speed out there in the great beyond the solar system. But I can still hear the music. Thanks to the electromagnetic spectrum. I've got one...well, part of one.

It’s SO hard to believe he wrote the lyrics to “These Days “ at that age. Same said for John Prine’s “Hello In There” And now that I am “of a certain age”, how hearing those songs change. Lots of covers done of “These Days” By far MY favorite is David Alan Coe. It just sounds like he’s not singing a song, he’s telling HIS story. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/br6bh5WLzbWZcX0.html

Jackson Browne was a huge hit for several years and kind of faded off the radio. This song was on a great album. One of the Eagles stayed in the same place as him before they were a band, maybe when some of them backed up Linda Ronstadt. He was asked about influences in his ability to write songs. He said he would listen to Jackson work on one. Play it over and over, change a little thing here a word there until it was just right. All night hour after hour. This brings back visual memories of my first apt. and my stereo on the floor in the living room, everyone grooving to this album, Rush 2112, others at that time. Thanks :-)

This song is a masterpiece & a tribute for the behind the scene workers that keep the show movin'... "Jackson really put in the time" ( Glenn Frye - RIP ) who lived below him in the same building said he Could hear Jackson pounding out a song for hours and hours then he'd hear the tea kettle whistle blow for a ten minute break... then he was back at it,over and over for hours on end... "dedication, time, persistence, that's how you write a song" ! Glenn got a lesson that he never forgot ( From the history of the Eagles ) K-n-R love the channel man... keep rockin' 😎🎹

Who was the first person to the play a guitar into an amplifier? THE easy answer is a jazz guitarist by the name of Jack Miller. Miller first used his new Rickenbacker Electro Spanish guitar at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles in 1932. He later wrote a series of articles for Downbeat magazine in which he described himself as 'the first to play electric guitar'. However, since the invention of the telephone mouthpiece pickup by Alexander Graham Bell (1876), all sorts of methods of electrically amplifying musical instruments had been tried, with little practical success. Throughout the 1920s, many guitarists and DIY enthusiasts tinkered with ways of making the guitar louder, producing prototype electric guitars and basses, and primitive amplifiers based on relatively new valve radio technology, though none ever made it into production. The coil-and-magnet guitar pickup as used today was invented around 1930, and the first electric guitars (made by Rickenbacker and National) went on sale to the public in 1931. If the questioner wants to be strictly accurate, George Beauchamp, the man generally credited with the invention of the guitar pickup, was almost certainly the first to play through an amplifier. One last point: amplification helped transform the guitar from a provider of rhythmic backing into a lead instrument that could compete with the horns of the 1930s jazz and swing bands. Among the first people to play lead guitar through an amp were Charlie Christian and Eddie Durham, the latter apparently being the first jazz guitarist to take a solo on record (around 1933).

Reminds me of sharing Jackson Browne with my dad when he was alive; makes me cry now (good tears though). Give it a go please...

Love this one. Used to sing to this at home a couple of decades ago, even recorded my singing for the first time ever. Poor neighbours! I loaned the album 'Saturate before using' from local library long time ago, but the only song I loved was Song for Adam. A masterpiece. Used to sing along from the top of my lungs. David Lindley's falsetto vocals!!!

Me and my roommate in college got to be roadies for a day fir Kool and the Gang back in 1981 or 1982. Amazing to be a part of setting up the9at stage and then tearing it down hours later.

Good pick, Rich! Us metal heads don't think much about Jackson Browne, but that's a good song, with some great musicians.

What a great song writer! I'm betting you've heard "Take it Easy" by the Eagles, yep, it's a JB song. I've seen him several times, and once, in a small theatre setting, he said...."I'd like to do a Gregg Allman song that I wrote" in reference to Gregg's wonderful version of Jackson's "These Days" It took a second, but cracked up the house! Jackson's version is magical as well. That "For Everyman" album is pure gold from start to finish! David Lindley is genius! As a former roadie for two bands, this has always been a favorite of mine!

Jackson Browne is one of the best. I think he is past by to often in classic rock circles. Another great video keep it up.

The album Running on Empty was an original album recorded live in concert and even on the tour bus. Has Kel seen Fast Times at Ridgemont High because Jackson Browne's song Somebody's Baby was featured almost in full in a major scene?

You are great guys. Man that song is over the top unbelievable. I love him so much. That kiss was amazing during the early part. I love my wife like that. Damn that's a reason to live.

I was born in 1976 and Jackson is my fav artist of all time. Huge thanks to my parents for that. Bright baby blues is my top song. I wonder if the eagles would have been as big without Jackson’s initially input?! Take it easy thieves!! (I joke as I love eagles too!)

I always loved this song, and it meant even more when I got a chance to actually roadie a couple of shows as a local roadie. It was nothing like I thought it would be, I thought it would be like Spinal Tap or something, but the traveling roadies were VERY professional. A very cool experience.

So great! At first all for the band and what they go through and then why they do is for the fans and then for the audience to stay just a little bit longer because once they are on stage and get that reaction everything comes into focus!!! Love it.

They used to play this all the time on the real rock stations . That was when you could hear deep cuts from all kinds of bands . Oh , this was the encore songs at their shows .
