Jacob Frye is misunderstood, and here is a character analysis to explain exactly how and why. I go through his motives, the consequences to his actions, how him being bi changes his story, and much more.
I hope, in some way, this video allows you to see Jacob in a new light. Enjoy :)
Also, if you want more videos like this, please do tell me in the comments :D!

I feel so bad for Jacob, no one ever takes him serious and he is always yelled at even when he tries his best, in the final of sequence 9 he is thrown around and hurt and neither Evie or Greenie ever goes to help him. All of that just for him to get killed by the one he loved most.

What do you mean about Sequence 8? Do you mean in Sequence 9 during the boss battle? Because Evie does help him? And he doesn't get killed? He's still alive at the end of Syndicate? Sorry, I am confused

I never really considered that most of the game's writing is probably from Evie's perspective before - but when you think about it, that arguably makes so much more sense! Both in and out of the AC Universe when you look at the development of the game and how Evie was originally meant to be the only character for a long time. Also we see Evie be more brash and jumping at opportunities than Jacob during cutscenes as well! Just look at when she meets Dickens and Marx - need I also mention the road rage-y quotes?! (also Jacob *really* needs a hug ngl. He deserves complete happiness) A superb video all around 1000/10!
@Kateis_
@Kateis_ 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Oh the road rage-y quotes, like on the carriages? Because I love the comparison between Jacob being soft with the horses vs Evie shouting at them ajhgdfj it really shows their personalities well I think. And yeah you're so right about her jumping at opportunities, especially with Marx when Jacob says they should talk about it first before saying sod it :P And yeah, he really does need a hug!!

Most the game can't be from Evies point of view. We're in an Animus, and Jacob has like 2 thirds of the story. So if anything, most the game is from Jacob's point of view. Evie only has 11 missions in the story. Really, the main game is about Jacob, and the Jack the ripper DLC is about Evie. Also most the details and depth about Jacob and his story, aren't seen by Evie. Not ever. She literally doesn't notice his struggle. So the game can't be from her point of view, in any regard.

This were exactly my thoughts about Jacob omg I've never seen someone see him like I did. I would like to note that Ethan was *probably* not homophobic as the Assassins in general are very progressive I would also like to add something. A general critique that Jacob gets is that his jokes are childish don't land so he's a bad comedic character but I always thought it was part of his charm? His humour is childish and sometimes even cringy but he's confident and proud of it. Jacob never thinks of what ppl would say/think of him and it reflects on his humour, saying every dumb thing he wants to say

I'm so glad you're doing Jacob justice, he honestly deserves it. While you were taking about Jacob being a mature Master Assassin in the Jack The Ripper DLC you said you had many theories about the DLC as a whole, and I was wondering if you would still be up to doing a video on your theories? Sorry if it sounds a bit forceful or something, I'm just really interested.

Some people call him a Idiot and that really saddens me because he isn't one. He really tries his hardest and he likes joking around, If both Evie and Jacob were serious it wouldn't be as nice to see them interact, Jacob's more fun personality is what I like most about him, So once again I thank you. Cannot express to you how much I enjoyed your analysis. Jacob seems to be the most hated and loved Assassin in the fandom at the same time, at least from what I've seen. I think it's very good that you talked about Jacob's Bisexuality IN DETAIL, instead of just brushing it off or thinking that it makes no sense or that it's unnecessary. It adds SO MUCH MORE depth than he already has lurking underneath his charm, witty humor and chaotic personality. Anyway, I'm off to reading more Jacob/Freddy fics. 🤌

Great in-depth analysis! Jacob and Evie remind me a lot of Dante and Vergil from Devil May Cry and also Vash and Knives from Trigun. It's not unusual to see twins portrayed this way - one easy-going the other more serious - and that doesn't mean the less serious twin is stupid or incompetent. Most of the times he is actually more the "hero", or at least the one we find ourselves rooting for the most. I usually like these raw diamond type of characters, they're the ones who are more fun to see evolve and mature.

When I had first played Syndicate I couldn't help but hate Jaocb, until I realized he was Bisexual, then I started to see him in a new light. When I had explained to everyone around me, they simply thought it was just because I am a member or the LGBTQ community and so is he, so they called me biased. However, as I watched this video, I realized that I didn't just switch over because he and I are one in the same when it comes to sexuality, but rather because I understand him. I understand his feelings and why he acts like he does, and I think it helped open my eyes to Jacob's character.

Jacob Frye was the heart and soul of the London Bureau, whilst Evie was its mind, Henry its eyes and ears and the Rooks their limbs. When Evie left for India, she took the sanity from London. I blame her, and only her, for London's collapse into The Ripper's Terror. Frederick Abberline had Evie escorted to his office mostly as a friendly scolding - commanding in as polite a tone possible, "Clean. Up. Your. Mess." For all of his flaws, Jacob Frye is a Masterwork of an Assassin and while not perfect, he is by every means exactly what London needed in his time.

a notice from the book (partly told from the perspective of Henry, Ethan Frye, and Aberline): Ethan Frye is described both by other assassins and a young Henry as being brash and mischievous, as well as a smidge sloppy in some of his cover ups, I think another aspect you could read into their dynamic is that sense of Ethan seeing too much of his worse qualities in Jacob and wanting him to be better, not realizing that it ends up being the thing pushing them apart. This is a great analysis that i love a lot and i appreciate the emphasis on Canon Bi Jacob Frye (even if i am a lil annoyed it was a Word of God confirmation, not that it would make sense otherwise)

He isn't perfect, but he does his job the best he can, improvises, and of course, he has a little fun. Who wouldn't have fun traveling on rooftops in London? He matures later in the DLC, but I think just like other AC games, if they had more time, every single one of them could be game of the year contenders.

After watching this video fully i think i actually view Jacob in a more positive light. He defo needs a hug😭 Evie will always be my favourite twin if I'm being honest😭 Her drip and character is more my type. I wish she wasn't done dirty and had equal missions with Jacob like how it was supposed to be in the og storyline. I felt forced to play with her brother ngl. I live in a homophobic country so the kiss between Jacob and Roth was cut out and i had no idea that Jacob was bi till i watched the gameplay online💀 Assassin-wise Jacob isn't my fav but I'm glad for the representation🙏

Before I get into what is likely to be a long comment, let me first say that I think your analysis was excellent and I agree with almost everything you said. Most videos and articles about Syndicate are years old (so I feel odd commenting on them), but I only played the game back in June, so I hope you'll indulge my babbling :) I started to watch this video last night, and I'll admit to initially rage-quitting at 3:15 when you said that Evie's missions were "padded out". In my -- admittedly limited so far -- experience with the Syndicate fandom (not game reviewers, but people posting fanfiction, fan art, memes, etc.), there seem to be two very popular opinions that drown out almost everything else: 1) that Jacob and Evie should bang (gross), and 2) that Evie is a b**** whose selfish obsession with the Pieces of Eden prevented Jacob from doing more good in London. So when you said Evie's missions had been padded out at the expense of Jacob's character, I thought you were one of the latter. When I was playing the game, I actually thought it was pretty obvious that Evie's story had been cut short in the main game and then they'd tried to make up for that by making her the star of JTR and giving her more time in the novel. I don't know if you've read the articles that came out in July, about Ubisoft executives forcing the team to reduce Evie's role in the story (and Aya's and Kassandra's as well), but apparently she and Jacob were initially intended to have equal scripted time. I feel cheated wondering what story line we missed out on because Ubisoft is run by misogynists. Would Evie have had a mess of her own to clean up at some point, or would we have seen her fulfill her promise to Clara instead of having the child liberations relegated to side missions, maybe? But I also feel that both JTR and the novel would have been stronger if we'd spent more time with Jacob or gotten more insight into his character. The novel would have been a perfect time to tell us more about why Ethan and Jacob didn't get along, but all we really get is.......*****novel spoilers ahead*****.......that they loved each other, Jacob was sad when Ethan got sicker and died, and Ethan thought both twins were ready to go to London, though he died before he could start making any concrete plans for them beyond their blooding. **End of novel spoilers** I came back to your video today with the intention of arguing that it is possible (preferable, even!) to defend and explain Jacob *without* assassinating Evie's character, and was pleased to learn that I wasn't going to have to do that after all. :) Without giving out any more spoilers, reading the novel made me wonder whether Ethan might have been bisexual himself, though likely in denial about it, and if he recognized that in Jacob -- maybe catching him giving another boy "inappropriate" (or so he would have thought) attention -- there might have been an element of self-hate there as well. I'm not LGBTQ myself, so it's quite likely that I'm reading into things that aren't really there, but I thought I'd mention it in case you read the novel (or planned to) and would love to know your opinion on that. Either that, or Ethan saw other aspects of his own personality in Jacob, recognized what those traits had cost him, and wished better for Jacob. I had a bit of a different interpretation of Aberline's instructions to Jacob regarding Twopenny than you did. I don't remember the exact line, but Aberline said something to Jacob about needing to catch Twopenny in the act and not to interrupt him, so before regaining control of Jacob, I thought the objective would be to kidnap Twopenny at some opportune moment, or maybe let Twopenny complete the theft and then tail him, leading the police straight to his hideout with the stolen goods. I was quite confused when the objective was instead to assassinate Twopenny, because in my mind, that's exactly what Aberline *didn't* want. That gave Jacob more culpability for the fallout, although the police are still partially to blame. I hadn't thought of it that way, but I think you're absolutely right in that regard. Finally, I'm with you 100% on the nature of the sibling relationship and what it tells us about Jacob. I almost feel like, even though we get Evie's own words from her journal, we actually get a more honest picture of their relationship by the looks they give each other at various points in the game. Fond amusement when Jacob gets his first kukri or when Evie fangirls over Charles Dickens. Tears in their eyes when they fight. Regret as they head off to the ball for their "last" mission together. And yes, jealousy from Jacob that Evie isn't spending as much time with him anymore. It's such a well-done relationship that these two are among my most favorite characters in any medium, ever. Anyway, great video, and thanks for reading!
@Kateis_
@Kateis_ 3 жыл бұрын
Wanna start this off with, thanks for watching! Even if the video turned ya off at first. I meant the padding out how many missions Evie has comment as a criticism of Syndicate's structure, but I didn't go too much into it since it wasn't the focus of the video. Obviously, I would have loved to have some of the fallout missions go to Jacob, and for Evie to have her own missions (especially assassination ones) that are independent of Jacob. It really annoyed me, and since all that stuff came out about Syndicate (and the other games), it annoyed me even more. That being said, even though Syndicate was supposed to be Evie's game alone (pretty sure that was one of the things going around months back), I do not regret that we got Jacob since, you know, he's bi. That mattered at the time, but now im just so much angrier about it all. Like, Evie could have had the starring role she deserved. I remember the reassurance at the time (just before the game launched) that Evie was going to have a small amount of missions compared to Jacob, and to find out it was supposed to be HER GAME. Ugh. That's the mood I have about it. To be honest, I've never read the novel despite being a huge fan of the game. I'm always gonna take the game's word over the novel's, if that makes sense :P Yeah like I love Evie to bits, I never intended that 'pad out' comment to be criticising her portrayal as much as I was criticising the story for leaving her out of the story somewhat. Huh, that's an interesting interpretation! If you see it, than I might as well believe it :P Ethan is bi confirmed! :P If it was a self hate thing, that would be more interesting. I just, god, I really wished we knew more about Ethan and Jacob's terse relationship in game. I mean I hadn't thought Abberline might that like, I mean, he knows Jacob is an assassin and I... Like I just can't with that whole thing, you know? It's just so... Abberline, what the fuck man! That's how I feel XD Yesss, so agree with what you said on their sibling relationship!!!! Thanks for this long comment, I've never seen one so long before :D

@@Kateis_ The sole protagonist thing was with Aya in Origins. She was supposed to be the sole player character, but then the developers were forced to replace her with...her husband, I guess? Same with Kassandra and Odyssey having the Alexios option. Evie was just supposed to have equal screen time along with Jacob, instead of getting roughly 1/3 of the story to his 2/3. While I'm sure Evie could carry an AC game all on her own, I love Jacob too and like you, I'm glad we got him (although before getting to know him, I admit it took me a while to warm up to him because I saw him as yet another male protagonist shoving the female one aside). But now, I can't imagine having one twin without the other. I get what you mean about taking the game's word over the novel's. There are some scenes that occur in both, where the novel's version is noticeably different than the game's, and I wonder why they made the changes they did. However, 2/3 of the book takes place before the game. You learn a lot about Ethan and Henry, and there's a decent amount of Abberline in there, too. Ethan is a very flawed individual, with what I feel to be a combination of Evie and Jacob's worst traits, and based on the excellent character analysis in this video, I bet you'd be able to glean some interesting observations from the book, even if we never get a definitive answer about his relationship with Jacob. You're probably right about Abberline, honestly. If he didn't want Twopenny dead, he should have specified, like he did with the kidnapping targets. (I accidentally let one die, once, because as I brought the target to the waiting carriage, a horse on the road *touched* him, and he dropped dead. Abberline's disgust was palpable XD )

Ah right yeah!!! Aya was let down so bad :( Kassandra tooooo :((( Yeah they do work well as like twin protags, just sooo wish Evie had been given a full story that didn't like have "Jacob cleanup missions" :( I should probably read the novel one day, as all I have right now is the wiki to see what happened in it! Great video - it's certainly given me a different perspective on Jacob. I have to ask though…what’s your opinion on Evie? I only ask this because, I’ve done a video on how to me, Evie is the redeeming aspect of Syndicate, and commented that Jacob is quite annoying. It’s a throw away comment and based mostly on the fact that I didn’t want to play as him, but I never EVER considered the fact that I saw him as a bit annoying because…well…Evie did, and she’s the twin I tried to play as much as I possibly could (despite the limitations of the story). I just find the idea that whichever twin you favoured is the one you would take the side of - much in the same way if they were real people venting about their sibling. I’ve always felt the sibling relationship between the two is probably the best part of the writing in Syndicate, it feels so authentic at times. Quite frankly, if me and my younger sister were assassins my last words to her before a mission would most certainly be ‘don’t die’ just like Evie’s were to Jacob at the start of the game. I find the Frye twins broken down to Evie is the straight man to Jacob’s joker and I just don’t think it’s right, I think they’re both so much more than that character wise. Both twins suffer from a very bad story - or in the very least a story that needed more background. I think Syndicate NEEDED to see some of their life with their father to truly understand their characters. There was just something missing in the backstory to fully round the two off. I won’t lie, it’s put the idea in my head to do a video along the lines of how both twins are viewed depending on who you spend most of your time playing as and if it influences how you feel about the other Frye sibling.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get to this! My opinion on Evie is that I love her! I love playing with her, I love her story and development, and while I favour Jacob, it's because he's bi, and that's more relatable to me than Evie is. But both of them are amazing characters and I love Evie just as much as Jacob! :) I do agree whichever you favour will give you a biased view for sure, I feel that's how we work as people with characters we like!
