You're the ONLY person I've seen who addressed the "apathy's a tragedy" line. I've seen numerous people address the "boredom is a crime" line but I feel like the apathy line is MUCH more impactful. People are demonized now for not caring about every single issue on earth and people feel like they HAVE to care about everything. It's a terrible way to live and isn't even realistic.

That’s because a lot of people (reactors) don’t understand what apathy is and to avoid criticism for not having a mature vocabulary, they would rather ignore the line completely. I love that Jacob actually took a second to pull up the definition from Google, even if he knew what it was already and was just for reassurance…. He was able to give a better understanding for the viewers who don’t know the meaning.

It's also where the slide whistles and such come from that was discussed. The imagery is meant to invoke a carnival barker who is surrounded by performers, all of whom are dazzling you with their antics, much like the internet does.

What's interesting about the Bo Burnham and AJR comparison is that they have all been performing since they were pretty young, and it influences a lot of their content. Bo Burnham at one point talks about how comedians use their own personal experiences in their content, and since all he's known is performing, that's what all of his content is about. AJR feels very similar, considering a lot of their music is about their career, with songs like "I'm Not Famous", "Next Up Forever", "Beats", etc.

Here's the thing; Yes, you're contributing to the problem, BUT it's in a much more innocuous way. You're not alone. As a viewer, I'm probably more of the problem. I'm still watching though. Moral of the story, "Inside" gave us all existential moments. Will we do something with that or not? I don't know.

That’s the thing: what do we do? For as insightful and poignant Bo is, not even he really has the solution. He’s too stuck in his own head to get out of it and find where to go. That’s not dissing him; I love Bo’s work. But being stuck “Inside” only perpetuates the problems were going through right now.

You had me thinking… about the difficulty of getting a song about true events and letting it unfold the right way. Couldn’t help but think about The Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. It’s definitely not my typical genre… but I guess it doesn’t matter because the storytelling is so compelling.

About your little talk on how hard it is to make music based on real events/history, you should check out Sabaton. They're a Swedish heavy metal band and the majority of their music is based on real historical events during wars throughout history. (Their songs are in English) They even have a separate KZfaq channel named Sabaton History specifically for going deeper into the events mentioned in the songs, they really like history and like using their music as a way to tell the stories.

I love how this song goes back and forth between trying to be friendly to lure you in, then gets overwhelming and scary, the calm and seductive to lure you back in, before slowly becoming crazy again. That’s how the internet works. You check out something fun, descend into the comments or random links until you end up somewhere bizarre and uncomfortable, you back off for a bit, come back for some relaxing browsing of hot people or food porn or something and then you inevitably get dragged into chaos again. He seduces you into putting yourself out there a little and it becomes intoxicating until it turns scary again because there will always be trolls. Back to the absolute circus again… haha so good! This song musically genuinely feels like the internet.

Can't Handle This and Art Is Dead are my two favorite Bo songs not on the newest special, and I highly recommend both before you watch Inside in entirety. Bo burnham and Eminem are I think my two biggest influences when I write. When I’m having a panic attack I just randomly start writing lyrics to keep my mind busy and they both use what you said, that halt, pause method and they both stretch words. Slow down, wait here, and then now I’m going to, start talking faster and put more rhymes into my rhyme scheme to keep your attention. Almost any one can do that but they actually make sense and deliver a message

Apathy’s a tragedy.- We grew up being told never to just ignore someone who needs help. Thus, why we always try to find trouble to fix or call out on. Boredom is a crime. “It’s your own fault if you’re bored.” I grew up hearing that and it was even before the internet became this way.

Interesting thoughts about the content creators being some sort of drug dealers. I sometimes get lost on internet. You can really lose the track of time here. And the sad part is that most of the content I binge-watch is good and harmless, like reaction videos: I just want to see "one more" and maybe discuss it a little. Which is EXACTLY what I'm doing right now, when actually I should be writing my paper. Everyone here have their own addiction: to Bo it was attention and audience, to me it's the community, and always has been. To an introvert the internet is the best place to be. I can't even count the amount of people I have met through different platforms and channels. And yet, this is taking away the time I used to spend on books, music, movies and walking through forests. Honestly, I don't know which is the better option. Because I love my internet community - it has helped me feel less lonely and tought me tons of things.

The internet contains so many beautiful and so many terrible things. Personally, I don't see what's wrong with enjoying online content, as long as you know your limits. Thinking about life and society makes me sad, but going on the internet and seeing all the wonderful things humans have created gives me hope. I'm not built to live in this society. This society is modeled for healthy neurotypical cishet white people who go to bed at 23 and wake up at 6, to work 8 hours a day. I am almost none of these things. I dread the thought of having to spend the rest of my life in that society, but on the internet, at least I'm not alone. There I can interact with things that make me happy. I can read stories, find inspiration, and ecourage and support artists who want to share their creations. I can find and talk to people who are just as passionate about my interests as I am. I am not limited to only what my surroundings decide to allow me access to. The internet is the only place where I can truly be myself. The only place where I'm not scared of intruding, because the only people who listen to me here, are those who want to. I would not say that being an internet creator is like being a drug dealer. A drug dealer doesn't just throw the drugs on the street and see if anyone takes it. You put your content out because you enjoy doing it, and you want to share with other people. Who then watches your content is not your responsibility - at least not as long as we are adults and you are not spreading harmful content. If you do not handle the internet well, and it harms your mental health, you should definitely take a step back and stop using it as much, or change what you use it for. That doesn't mean it has to be taken from everyone. The problem, in my opinion, is not the content that people put out, but social media and news sites forcing themselves into our notifications. Social media is nice for keeping in contact, but should most definitely not be used to share every second of your life. Doing so creates a need for vaildation in every one of your actions in your personal life, unlike content sharing, which is all about sharing your craft and your creations. The problem is not the media which we seek out and enjoy, but the media which is shoved in our faces to control us. If you go to the cinema, you enjoy yourself, but if someone constantly played movies they wanted you to see through your living room window, you'd have a problem.

I am extremely irritated in this reaction, because (deliberate or repetitively coincidentally) you keep stopping the video RIGHT when something really interesting happens (such as a tempo change), completely ruining it, and you completely fail to recognize the moment because of this.

I think Apathy goes hand in hand with empathy. As people continue getting bombarded with awful information, everybody telling them they need to care about absolutely everything all of the time and if you don’t, you’re an awful piece of trash, people get overwhelmed and acquire what is known as “compassion fatigue”. You want to care but you’re too tired mentally, and even physically, to care anymore and that is when apathy comes and a little bit of empathy goes away, a little bit each time. Sometimes you’re just too overwhelmed with stuff happening in your life/country that you don’t have the energy nor time to care about anything outside of that. “Oh, there was another mass shooting? Well that sucks. They should regulate firearms!…. Anyways, back to Tumblr” Two weeks later: “Oh, there was another mass shooting?….” Rinse and repeat.
