I think Etsy is a good place to buy most of these items ( butterfly boards, shadow boxes and dried butterflies) and for the containers you can buy them from most supermarkets. The silicone can be found in shops focused on DIY or a DIY section in a supermarket it depends where you live but where I am B&Q is a good bet for the silicone. Hope this helps :)

Hi! I have a few questions: Can you just use any shadowframe like the ones from IKEA? Is silicone glue soluble so you can put the butterfly in a different shadowframe if i would want to in the future? Or does soluble glue not exist? I saw someone using a special tape to make sure nothing can get in the frame, does sillicone glue do the same? If i use an IKEA frame where do i put the glue or tape? I'm only a beginner and i finally know how to prepare the butterflies, but now i'm trying to find out the best way to display them in a frame or a bell jar. Thanks in advance, Janneke
@YeOldeRockShop
@YeOldeRockShop 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, you can use any shadowbox just make sure you seal up the back so that nothing can get into it. The silicone is not soluble so if you are wanting to place it into a frame and then place it into a different one afterwards, I would recommend you to not use any glue for the butterfly at all. You can get shadowboxes with a pillow or a foam backing where you can then use that center pin to just pin the insect to the back instead of gluing it. This way you can move it to another frame later on. Although using silicon is safer as the pin is not as stable and can fall off. If you are wanting to change frames you can also get a picture framing tape that you can use on the back of the frame. It is a moisture adhesive tape that you put along the edge in the back to help seal it. You can use a knife to cut this in the future to remove the butterfly, but it is not as secure at a silicon would. As for the IKEA frame I am unfamiliar with it, but you want to put the silicon along the edge where the back of the frame attaches to the front. The goal is to seal it in, so if you are unsure of the frame you want to use, I would recommend waiting until you find the perfect frame as your specimen will be safer if it is fully enclosed.

I have a few questions hope you dont mind, but if I have a freshly dead moth, can I just mount them immediately? And if I could, would mold grow inside the display shadow box later on, because they till have their original fluids or not ? And say I'm not ready to mount them yet, how can I properly let them dry and be stored without the growth of mold and still be kept save for some time ? Sorry for asking much I'm new to preserving moths and other beautiful critters
@YeOldeRockShop
@YeOldeRockShop Жыл бұрын
Typically I recommend putting a freshly dead specimen into a freezer for a day or two just to ensure that it has completely passed on and that there is nothing else feeding on the specimen that you may not be able to see. In terms of mold allow your specimen to completely dry out in the open air before placing it into any container as if it is immediately put in an air tight container it will mold if not dried properly. If you're not ready to mount it yet you can let them dry out for a week or two in the open air and then you can place them into a sealed container so they don't get excessive dusty or have issues with dermestids. Just remember, the thicker the body the longer you have to leave it out to dry.

@YeOldeRockShop
@YeOldeRockShop 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can over hydrate, if you leave them for too long they can start producing mold which will deteriorate the wings. It really depends on how big the specimen is for the hydration time so there is no set time frame.

This was so helpful :) would it be bad to use superglue or regular glue instead of silicone?
@AlastorIsAStrawberryPimp
@AlastorIsAStrawberryPimp 11 ай бұрын
I'm not very experienced and I dont personally pin butterflies but I will in the future, you don't have to listen to me but here's my thoughts. Super glue might harm the back of your butterfly and do other things due to the chemicals and regular glue could be hard to apply due to how it's either too thick (as a glue stick) or too stringy and sticky (as PVA or liquid) I hope this helps but like I said you don't have to follow this advice as I'm only a child. Thank you for reading this :)
@Seimonster27
@Seimonster27 27 күн бұрын
Also, if the superglue isn't fully dry before closing the shadowbox, it will fog up the glass. And I think it's not a thick enough glue consistency for a good long term hold. I think silicone is recommended in this case because it's probably not as acidic, so it won't eat away your specimen over time.

Sometimes if too much fluid is injected with high pressure, it may cause some of the specimen to leak out. Allow the specimen to completely dry out for a longer period of time. Without seeing it I cannot verify if its mold or not. If it is, you can try to dab the area with rubbing alcohol GENTLY to kill off any growing old. Then allow the specimen to dry out completely afterwords.

Lmao I'm in the same situation rn, I think I'll just leave it like that until it dies, and then do what she did. I don't think you can kill it normally without damaging the wings

Hey I have a question! Do you need a syringe? I don't have one but I have a butterfly I found that I want to pin, thanks!
@YeOldeRockShop
@YeOldeRockShop Жыл бұрын
You dont NEED one, however it will just take much longer to hydrate. To do this place the butterfly in a air tight container with a warm wet cloth (paper towel) and leave until wings are mobile.

Can you hydrate the butterfly with out injecting it?
@YeOldeRockShop
@YeOldeRockShop Жыл бұрын
Yes you can, this just requires the specimen to be in the hydration box longer. However, you risk molding with this method.

Question: Do I have to inject warm water into the butterfly or can I just put it in a humidity box? bc I’m personally not allowed to use needles because my psychiatrist doesn’t want me messing with it due to past issues🤠

Yes, you can do it without the syringe however the hydration time will take longer.

How do you know if it needs rehydrated
@YeOldeRockShop
@YeOldeRockShop Жыл бұрын
The hydration makes the specimen easy to maneuver and pose. If it seems stiff or ridged, it needs hydration. :)

I came here because I played Dream Daddy, a Daddy Dating Simulator and a Dadbook event for one of the characters gave me just enough information to become interested in pinning butterflies. Random, I know.

Hi, I just have a question I wondered if you can answer. Killing the butterfly. I’m raising some Peacock caterpillars I found into butterflies and then want to dispatch and set them. What’s the best method of dispatch without a chemical kill jar? I’ve seen “pinching” recommended but I’ve no idea where to begin and there are no tutorials. And then freezing. I’d do the freezing, but I’m curious as to the aftermath. How long to freeze? Do they go mushy when thawed or are they fine? Thanks for any advice.
@YeOldeRockShop
@YeOldeRockShop 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, I would recommend freezing. Leave them for a few days and allow them to de-thaw before working with them. Personally, Ive never had a problem with them coming out mushy.

That butterfly at 8:15 actually looks so scary. I wonder if its possible to make a dress out of morpho butterflies? It would be an awesome wedding present for my 3rd wife. (If it happens, hopefully the first two don't get too jealous)

I haven't used it before for this, but I would potentially worry about it letting go? Particularly on a shiny bodied insect, on say a beetle. Butterflies may be ok?
