Liz and Merry Noel become friends as college roommates and their friendship endures over the years. Liz becomes a respected "serious" novelist. Merry Noel marries, has a daughter and writes, too: "trash" fiction which becomes enormously successful. Their story begins in college and jumps ahead some years at a time to show their relationship with each other and those in their orbits as they grow and mature.

Very creative, how Bisset says her lines, and then leans back, revealing Buchner in the mirror to speak his lines, rather than changing the camera angle.

I've seen this film probably more than 50 times. I worked at the Plaza theatre in Westwood when it played. I sat through it many times. The ending moved me to tears. However, I had to grow to like this one particular cafe' scene. I thought it came off terribly pretentious the first time I saw it. I also knew George Cukor and he did not have nice things to say about Bisset. He adored Candice Bergen however. That said, it's Bisset's best performance and she's ravishing in it.

Agreed Bisset gives a wonderful performance here, I think it’s one of her best what a totally underrated performer

Agreed, the raw vulnerability she displayed in this films gets me every time. I have read that the making of the the film was not very pleasant for her. I don’t think she’s ever gotten the credit she deserves for her sheer talent as an actress. Her stunning looks have often gotten in her way
