Raymond Williams and Jacques Derrida talk in the empty hall at the end of the Linguistics of Writing Conference (Glasgow UK, 1986). They begin by reflecting on the recording of the event for television. Gradually their conversation widens to touch on topics including translation, the international flow and influence of publications and artistic movements, and the role of the English language and North American market in legitimizing academic ideas.

Pleased to see some video of Raymond Williams. There is very little about: surprising considering his interest in television.

Raymond Williams here is placing Derrida in a "set" which is the classiest form of formal academic playful diss one could give to Derrida.

Raymond Williams had the utmost mutual respect and broader commitment to understanding of Derrida's work. Clearly you don't understand what you're listening to.

If you think academic philosophical conversation is about 'classy disses' you are consuming it exactly as the spectacle Derrida was critical of.
