who knows the future but a LOT of married couples are separated or legally separated & live apart but they still see each other, spend some nights with each other, travel together, etc. because they still have a deep love, even if they don't get along in a full time kind of way. and none of the people have ever found someone they like or love enough to end the relationship of their first marriage permanently. this definitely doesn't work for all married couples who split up & most move on to get divorced. but it DOES work for some. whether or not they see other people in spending time together between is something we, their closest friends & family haven't seen be a priority, even holidays they still come together and/or are with one or more of their adult kids and their kids' family. only one of these pairs, a couple that lived on the same property but the husband lived [officially] in the guest house for years - at least one of the 2 people decided to finally end that form of their relationship and finally divorced. and the now ex-husband has a girlfriend who he brings to important events. the others, those of us who know them have never seen them with a new person at holidays and other important events. just like some of the longtime couples I've known who have been in open relationships [not meaning polyamory]. and Im sure if I didn't know them personally, if I wasn't close to them or didn't care about them it would all be weirder in my mind. and cheating in a relationship and selfish, self-centered people in open relationships have a whole different vibe for me and feels Iike something awful. and I can't imagine, personally, being in these kinds of relationships myself, the thought or experience has never worked for me. only once did I even date more than one man at once but I wasn't intensely intimate with either one of them at the time. I was honest with both of them and they were both very nice men who I liked a lot. I don't even remember making a conscious decision to spend time like that with more than one person. and being a woman I know, for many men, it's quite normal to date 2 or more women at a time but for me, it wasn't normal at all and I didn't want to risk misleading either one of them. a courtesy that some but not most men I've known as friends didn't always extend to women *they* were seeing. their rationale was always that until they *"commit"* to seeing only one of them they felt fine about it and only if asked would they tell a woman they were seeing another/others. me dating 2 different men during the same time period didn't last long. because within a few months one of them went out of town for a few weeks and the other guy decided to 'shoot his shot' and seduce me into being his girlfriend. it worked and it was, so far anyway, the only time in my life where I felt I could have ended up with either one of them as my boyfriend. meaning if I'd been lucky enough to be able to date both of them longer. but then maybe if that had happened I would have favored one more than the other but guess I'll never know, right? anyway, I did feel bad when I let the other guy know I wasn't going to be dating him anymore. he was disappointed but he said he understood. a very nice guy and we actually had mutual friends, so that it was all amicable helped.
