Today's food tour in Kozhikode kicked off on a different note as our amazing host Mazan took us on a brief heritage tour featuring two major heritage points in the city. But before commencing we gulped down a heavenly parripu payasam from Lakshmi Sweets & Coffee Cafe. The first heritage destination was the newly renovated Kuttichira pond in the center of Thekkepuram, a Muslim dominant settlement along the coast of Kozhikode. It has sheltered pavilions with seating overlooking the water body. A part of the walkway serves as an open museum with a paved path, signage and relief works, contributing to the historical awareness of Kuttichira with reference to Ibn Batuta’s travelogues.
It being a wet day, we headed to The Beach Hotel's bar to have some hot brandy to tackle the chill and continue with the tour. The next stop was the iconic Mishkal mosque, a 4 storeyed mosque that was built by an Arab trader and ship owner Nakhooda Mishkal in the 14th century. This unique structure can accommodate 400 people and has 48 entrances. A blend of traditional Kerala style and Arabic style, it is one of the important architectural monuments in Kerala.
Soon after we started our food tour and the first stop was Bombay Hotel. It is known for its elaborate Malabari snacks menu that is closest to those made at home. Interestingly the place is a favourite of people from all age groups. Here we tried a bunch of snacks like elanchi, chicken chatti pathiri, cheemen cake, mutton cutlet and unnakaya along with a mandatory tumbler of tea. Each and every dish was different from each other in taste and texture. Watch the video to discover more about the flavours.
From here we again stopped by a local bar to have some more brandy as it had rained heavily a while back and the weather had turned wet and chilly. The second stop was Jaffer's Soya Fry shop at Halwa bazaar. As the name indicates this place run by the genial Jaffar bhai and family is known for soya fry which is a spicy and delicious stir fry made of soya nuggets and every Kerala spices. We loved the tender and juicy nuggets that had soaked up all the spices along with the earthiness of coconut oil.
The third stop was the Rahmath Hotel. A much-loved non-veg destination in Kozhikode, Rahmath Hotel, famous for its meaty biryani, curries, parota and fried meat. Locals are so fond of the food over here that they don't mind the serpentine queues of people especially on weekends. Here we tried some wheat porota with fried chicken and quail.
The final stop of this tour was Ferozekante Sharbath Kada for tender coconut juice. This light and luscious drink made of tender coconut flesh was refreshing and a perfect end to the meal.
