Ratha Yatra is a celebration of the legends of the three sibling deities, Jagannath (also known as Lord Krishna), Balabhadra, and Subhadra. Statues of the deities are taken in a procession (yatra) through the streets in a chariot (ratha). The festival is celebrated around the world, but the most famous and largest celebrations take place at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, India. The day begins with a ceremony called Ratha Prathistha. In the afternoon, the most exciting part of the day occurs when the chariots actually begin to move, prompting great excitement and joy. This is called the Ratha Tana. In school we strive to celebrate each and every festival with the meaning of understanding which can be fruitful for children to know more about Indian festivals and culture.
