When I was a kid, my dad had loads of e-types -- sometimes two at a time. But the one I remember most was a lightweight ex-race Lister (I think), that had blown it's engine and been put back on the road with a tuned 3.8, and no soundproofing! My mother used to refuse to go in it because it gave her headaches, as it was so incredibly noisy. But I loved it. He used to drop me off at school and then blast it back up the very steep Westerham Hill. You could hear it going for ages. I used to tell all my friends he was a racing driver and was late for his race. Now you barely ever see an e-type on the roads, let alone something like that. Cool times! :0)

Great story. A few years ago I became acquainted with a guy who owned a GT40. He invited me to his house to see it in late August (very warm time of year, where I am). He said the car gets so hot that he only is able to drive it in late October/November. He also said it is so loud that he couldn't turn it on for me to hear it because it was obnoxiously loud, and really disturbs the neighbors. Here in the U.S., in the late '70's, I had an 8th-grade teacher who drove a beautifully-restored E-Type with a pale yellow paint job. GORGEOUS car.

Having read these comments . A few responses are appropriate 1. this is Goodwood revival only FIA htp appropriate cars are invited ,this is probably an original or very close too. It makes at most in race eligible form 320 hp . 2. To be invited it is probably an original or at least has a serious race history last one of the thirteen originals made sold at auction for $7.9 million so the crack about being cheap compared with a cobra is uninformed 3. the 289 was what ran against the e type not the 427 cobra . they are in different classes apples and oranges . 4 the cobra is a power car the e type more of a momentum car notice you never hear the revs drop ,look at the tarmac its wet you can't put the power down or your going sideways . 5. Chris Ward is one of the top vintage race drivers often hired to coach the old men gentleman drivers who own these cars ,then co drive in the enduros . He is an e type specialist 6. a A well set up E type is a joy to drive ,and J D classics know what they are doing . I have driven a Low drag E type back to back with a modern Aston Martin GT4 a number of times . The e type holds a better line if you dont over drive and Chris Ward is a master as is Stretton and Minshaw to name some others . 7. As for the speedo the only time you need it is in pit lane to avoid a penalty, they probably have tape on the rev counter for pit lane 35 mph . the e type speedo is a cable steels horse power as its mechanical

Exactly is and well written. Thank you. I do rather suspect though that these days the 3.8s are giving off rather more than 320HP, especially with Lucas Fuel-Injection. I'm glad though that I do not have to work on the buggers any more!

It's still a British heap of shit engineering. Tapered axles with keyways and hubs, wire wheels, obsolete shocks even when new. Horrid electrical system. 1950s technology at best. British autos died in the USA for a reason, and it wasn't because of styling or performance

Douglas Ames I think you tend to forget that the cobra was of the same era, another British sport car, that you Americans Couldn't make, ok Shelby put a small v8 into it, but then to get noticed on any race tracks you had to employ a British race car driver to show you how to drive it , one Ken Miles, so again you idiots don't do any research before running off at the mouth , face it chap you owe us big time... Having driven both -- and being seated next to Mr. Shelby during an awards banquet -- I seized the opportunity and addressed something that's bugged me since the muscle car era. I asked, "Which was better, the 289 or 427 Cobra?" Practically everyone in the room looked over when 12 forks/knives clanked on plates as journalists dove for their notepads scrambling to record his answer (here's his direct quote): "The big block was a BASTARD of a car! Go like hell in a straight line, but that's about it. The small block was a MUCH better car!" This video reinforces why more torque isn't always the answer in road racing....it's balance. Lucky for me, that Beck Lister Corvette tribute car #007 is one of only two lightweights he built, and its all-alloy Donovan HC400 small block means that I now have both!...I'm spoiled, I know. :) www.damdrivingschool.com/media/Photos/pages/CarrollShelbyNAJA.htm

I think the power difference is smaller than you'd think. Those 289s are probably around 350-370hp. Another video of what I believe is this same car says it's making 344hp. Add in the better aerodynamics of the E-Type and it's not terribly surprising. I'd like to see the 350hp Shelby Daytona go up against the E-Type. That's a pretty close race in power and aerodynamics I think. Aside from drivers, it'd all come down to the chassis.

I guess these were 283 or 289 ci Cobras? They could pull the Jag slightly on the straights but fell way back on the corners. The Jag was able to use far deeper braking points and it turned in superbly. While the Cobra drivers had to manhandle their machines through the twisties, sliding sideways in four-wheel drifts, the Jag driver used his car's superior suspension to pass his competitors on the inside, the outside, wherever there was an opening. Had he not been blocked by that second-place Cobra for so much of the race, the Jag pilot would have run away from the field.

(I do love the e-type and have since I was a boy...arguably the most elegant sports car available to the common man at the time. My second and third loves are the Cobra and the 300SL Gullwing. Interestingly, all of these were relatively affordable when I was a boy...i remember seeing ads for a used Mercedes priced at $5k USD. The Cobra was $7K. A used e-type was less than both....1960s.)

man that dude drove it like he stole it ! really not a fair race..thats a Jaguar E-Type Lightweight ! the bulge on the rear deck gives it away and those are 289 cobras..its easy to tell when a 427 cobra is beside you..you go deaf : )

@michaeldeakin4283 4 жыл бұрын
The 289's had more success, the 289 Daytonas were hitting over 190 mph down the long straights at Le Mans.

@@michaeldeakin4283 You also forgot to add, the 427 was little more than a dragster, it really does not do corners!

The camera placement in the car was perfect, both for the forward view, and that the competitors were so easily seen in the rear view mirror.

You're right...If this was a normal "E-Type" Jag it would displace either 231 to 256 cu in. But this is not a regular "E-Type" Jag. The Jag in this video is one of I believe only 2 "lightweight" E-types that were modified into coupes. From what I understand the engines in these cars were upgraded several times during their racing life. So to be fair there's no telling what's actually under the hood of this one.

Sorry, only going off of the description of the car written by the makers of this video, and also the fact that the in car camera very clearly shows a metal roof ("Roadster" = No Metal Roof). P.S. Thanks for giving me an excuse to watch this video again :)

A great video with some very nice cars on the track, thanks. I enjoy driving my E Type. When you get in you really "put on the car" everything about it is just right. The Jag power with triple SUs is just a joy to drive.
