David Paddison didn't grow up in a car-loving family-he developed his passion for cars with his friends with whom he grew up racing slot cars before graduating into full-sized versions. Today he enjoys collecting classic cars and still looks to the ones he lusted after in his youth as a bucket list of must-haves. His beautiful 1974 Jaguar E-Type is one of those cars. Petrolicious had the chance to spend some time with David and his very special E-Type, one of the last sixty made.

The E type. I fell in love when I was sweet sixteen. Wanted one with all my might. Three decades. By the time I had the mechanic to check it and the money to buy it, I was in my forties and my little ol spine would just not let me enjoy lowering myself down into the drivers seat, and especially NOT let me get UP out of that seat four, five ...a dozen times a day as I took care of daily business. So I had to fall in love with the 12 cylinder 4 door Jaguar. Not a problem unless the year produced body type I did not care for. Passion is wasted on the young (me) with a true fetish for the E Type . Still love to look at them. Also to look at the BMWs produced in the 1970s

A beautiful looking car that is only spoilt by the US regulators that mandated the stupid rubber bumpers on everything. The owner didn't say if he had done anything to the car since purchase, so it has to be to the credit of the previous owner.

I have to say, I own a series 3 V12 coupe and I've driven an early series 1 and they handle nothing alike. The V12 has assisted steering, the wheelbase is longer (to fit the V11 long block in) and the weight of the engine at the front changes the handling characteristics dramatically. The series 1 I drove was very direct, felt like an out and out sports car. The series 3 is much more of a grand tourer. It's still an exceptional car don't get me wrong, I would never part with mine, and which you prefer is a matter of preference. I would never feel the V12 was at home around Goodwood circuit, but equally I wouldn't feel a series 1 was best suited to a leisurely lope through Europe. Both very different cars.
@williamg8853
@williamg8853 7 жыл бұрын
Tom, the extra length was at the doors and behind, not for the engine. The (aluminium v12 ) engine is only slightly heavier than the (iron block) 6 cylinder. The wheel track of the V12 is also wider. The longer wheelbase and weight (primarily) make the V12 a bit more GT, but it can be made to handle very well... .
@cruiseoveride

And just to add to what William said, the V12 XKE is actually rear weight biased (i.e. lighter in the front)

Well I have owned several I am a mechanic bought my first E type 66 coupe when I was 18. sold my insurance policy and jumped in from advice from my best friend a neighbour. For me I prefer the 65 -67 best of all worlds synchro gear box, open headlight, tri carbs. The 3.8 may be a wee bit quicker but not as nice to drive.The V12 is smooth quiet and sounds like a mad hornet from exhaust sure its not as firm on the road but as some said a tourer. You can get stainless bumpers frt& rear get rid of that[ not so good looking rubber] put a 5 speed and 6 downdraft webers stiffen suspension and my knowledge says You are likely to not drive a smoother, faster, sleek sports car that keeps it value and looks so beautifu

From a guy that had two series 1 E-types I found the 3 series cars too heavy up front and not a great handling unit in comparison. Air conditioning, power steering and a SOHC vs a DOHC made the series E-types boat-like in the performance department. Still, all types are cool. My days of taking a $125,000/$175,000 car out for street rides are long over. God forbid some nut on a cell phone blows a stop sign and t-bones the unit! No doubt a classic that will gain in value but with these units the attraction by the general public causes problems, unless you want to answer questions for an hour. Be that as it may, they are great Hanger Queens!

mmm, not Petrolicious' best video, and the owner didn't seem to really know much about it. The six and 12 cyclinder cars are quite different and the sixes are much more desirable. Well, not so useless actually if they qualified the Jag for the 5-mph bumber law. Quite useful actually if someone backs into you or you miscalculate by a bit. Not that I'd leave them on either. If Jaguar had the money they could have done something less awful to comply. It took a while for all the car companies to figure out. For a really awful solution check out the Triumphs or MGs of the period.
