BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A JAGUAR I PACE FROM OSV: bit.ly/2V3ta5p
Jaguar becomes the first of the premium brand manufacturers to make a long range, practical, battery-powered electric vehicle. If you can afford the £60,000 asking price, you might well have everything you could want here: a 300 mile driving range, 395bhp, potentially zero emissions and a car that might be as comfortable taking to a racetrack as to a gravelly ravine. Welcome to the I-PACE.
Background
It seems to have taken the posh car makers a long time to have got their heads round the concept of full-electric power. Yes, they've dabbled with plug-in hybrids and shown futuristic concepts at motor shows but in terms of products customers can actually buy, the Tesla Model S has had the full-EV premium market for large cars to itself for well over half a decade. But stand by Elon Musk: things are about to get a whole lot tougher.
This Jaguar I-PACE delivers a Tesla-style 300-mile drive range but, thanks to proper 50/50 weight distribution and Jaguar know how, handling dynamics that owners of a Model S or a Model 3 could only dream of. Technology people can create an electric car. But only car people can make one like the I-PACE.
Driving Experience
We're looking forward to putting this I-PACE to the test; the prospects certainly look promising. The stuff you need to know here's quite straightforward - by electric vehicle standards anyway. The 90kWh lithium-ion battery pack lies between the axles and Jaguar has specified two electric motors so that it could position the wheels for a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. They're powerful too, giving this 'performance' EV a 395bhp output. Rest to 60mph takes just 4.5s. Drive like that though and the claimed 300 mile operating range will be used up pretty quickly.
You'd expect silent refinement and instant acceleration from rest from an electric car but, due to the heavy weight of all those batteries, less than stellar ride quality. Jaguar claims it's put a lot of work into that and offers I-PACE buyers a wide choice of suspension options. You can have passive or adaptive dampers or air springs with adaptive damping. An electric 4WD system is standard - one of those that can put as much or as little torque as is necessary to any wheel. If you were ever brave enough to try your I-PACE off road, you might be surprised at what it could do. Jaguar claims it would wade up to 500mm of water.
Design and Build
In theory, the I-PACE is a kind of SUV. But you might equally want to see it as a coupe, a luxury saloon or even some kind of sportscar. Designer Ian Callum isn't bothered either way. At 4,682mm in length, this model is 10mm longer than Jaguar's XE; it's bigger than the larger XF saloon too, with a 30mm longer wheelbase and 15mm of extra width. There's more of a cab-forward stance than you'd get in a conventionally-engined Jaguar but the silhouette looks very agile in profile. And it retains a traditional big grille, even though the three independent cooling systems (for the electric motors, the battery and the interior) don't really need it.
Inside, the cabin's very Jaguar-like, with big comfortable seats that come with faux-leather as standard and real hide at extra cost. You can even have wood trim if you want it. Ahead of the driver sits an all-digital instrument binnacle and the centre-dash infotainment layout is bespoke to the I-PACE too. As in the Range Rover Velar, it's a two-screen package, the upper part dealing with navigation, audio and 'phone functions and the lower part operating informational stuff you'll need less frequently. It's a comfortable five-seater and there's a decent 656-litre boot, with a further 27-litre compartment out-front.
Market and Model
From launch, the I-PACE comes in one 'EV400' package with a 90kWh battery and a 395bhp all-wheel drive powertrain. There are three standard trim levels - 'S', 'SE' and 'HSE', with an additional 'First Edition' flagship variant offered during the first year of production. Prices start at around £63,500 and range up to around £81,500 - but of course from those figures, you can deduct the usual government £4,500 grant that applies to all full-EV models.
Equipment levels are as generous as you would expect for the money being asked. Even the entry-level 'S' variant comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, full-LED headlights, sports seats, a Meridian sound system, a 'Navigation Pro' infotainment set-up, a rear parking camera, cruise control and heated door mirrors. 'SE' models add leather seats, a powered tailgate and power-folding mirrors. The 'HSE' gets a Meridian Surround Sound audio system, 20-inch wheels, Matrix-LED headlights, super-soft 'Windsor' leather upholstery and a 'Driver Assist' pack including adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree parking camera.

Reasons why I would have a Jaguar I-PACE over a Tesla : 1. It doesn't rely entirely on the infotainment screen to control everything. 2. It looks good, in that it looks like a traditional car. Don't care if the front grill is not necessary, it adds to the character, 3. You have the option of a space saver spare wheel. 4. It's a 'Jag'.

Watched the video and I bought the car, getting 230 miles from a charge in the summer, happy with that, expect 190 - 200 in the winter. Tried the model 3 and the S. Great cars with better tech however the interior in the ipace and a dealer network swung it for me along with the quality of the build. Faster chargers for CCS are popping up everywhere now so while it will never be as good as tesla chargers 40 minutes is good enough for me and I expect - most people. I just think it is now great to have a choice as this should make sure each manufacturer keep on top of their games.

Thank you OSV for such an in depth review of the Jaguar I-Pace. Although some here would question the length of the video, I would think that if you are seriously thinking of parting with £70k+ of your hard earned cash, you'd want this level of information and coverage of all key parts of a car. Although I have already purchased an I-Pace and am very happy with the purchased, I would have loved to have seen this video review before my purchase as some of my purchasing options would have been slightly different. I think in short if you prefer the tech-geeky nature of a Tesla, purchase that, if you want a luxury driving experience, purchase the I-Pace. However, charging is a big question and the Tesla supercharging network is second to none, however, for us, we rarely do more than the 80% charge per day and plug it into charge as soon as we arrive home, which means we have yet to visit a public charger. Once again, thank you OSV for such an in depth review and please keep up the good work. If I had seen this video before making my purchase, I would have most definitely considered OSV as a purchasing source and I will be recommending this review and others to friends/colleagues.

I've driven an i-Pace and a Model 3 Tesla for about 20 minutes gentle driving of each. I like the i-Pace because it has more dedicated actual mechanical switches but nothing else comes to mind (I have owned a Tesla Model S for almost 4 years and having to go through screen menus to accomplish simple tasks is a little annoying but not a deal breaker for me ). The Model S steering feels remote, with little feedback and the steering lock is only just adequate particularly considering it is a long and wide car (again not ideal but not a deal breaker, the Model 3 is much better in both respects) but the weight balance of which so much is made in this video is fine on all AWD Tesla cars. The Model S is too big for me (at the time I bought it I knew that but it was the only EV with the range I needed and I wanted an EV). It's a personal judgement call but I think the Tesla Model 3 is a better car and an EV that will not require a petrol car back up (if you want a larger car the X and S are available). Tesla still has the best charging network (that is really important) but the service situation has gone from sublime to chronic and is about to get much worse with the release of the Model 3 here (that should also be a big consideration when choosing which EV to buy). What is the service situation for the iPace (I don't know, just curious) ?

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply it’s a lovely car. Air ride is comfortable on 22” wheels. HSE. The Meridian Surround is the best system I have heard on the road. Very comfortable to drive. Driving it on the M25 though, 30% of the range disappeared and, at services there was one free charger but it was faulty. However, it will regularly see A-B roads rather than motorways. Brake regeneration high is frightening as there is a dead spot in the brake pedal. Low mode feels a lot more like a traditional automatic but not the best. People say MY20 is a bad purchase because the infotainment is slow. Honestly, it was not and, the car has had all the updates so, works fine. I use Apple CarPlay mainly anyway. Buying used, a battery report is vital. It takes 10 hours. The lowest cell of the 36 was 92% which is good news. Jaguar guarantees the battery will not drop below 70% for 8 years/100k miles. Other than 4 wheel drive not meaning 4 wheel stopping power it’s a lovely car all round. I have kept our C220d for long journeys for the time being. I honestly wouldn’t have bought the Jaguar though without watching this video. The audible reverse beeps on the exterior are helpful. I have a visually impaired neighbour and she can hear me reverse but cannot hear our other neighbours Tesla. Talking of Tesla it is possible to use their charge network via the app as a ‘non Tesla’ customer. However, the cables are so short you would have to park parallel and take up three bays. It’s working out cheaper than my diesel for local journeys for sure. Around £60 cheaper. Hopefully there is another petition to block the planned VED for 2025.

I have one of these on order for November. It will be my first EV and being complete car fanatic I am nervous to see if living without the noise and feel of an ICE is going to disappoint me too much. I loved the test drive I had and the interior is gorgeous and well made. It felt fast enough and handled far better than I expected. It is leagues ahead in terms of quality and driving enjoyment compared to a Tesla Model S P100D I drove a couple of years a go. I was also looking at a Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor but the extra space, nicer interior and an amazing deal from Jaguar swung it in the cats favour. The colour is the only thing I cant seem to stick with. Started with Caesium Blue but now changed to Firenze Red (for now)... A couple of updates are that you now get 40:20:40 split rear seats but at present because of the 'worldwide chip shortage' there is no 360 camera and as of yesterday no gesture tailgate release option.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply I loved the I-PACE ever since I drove one back in 2018 but the lack of 100KW chargers then and even more sporadic 50KW charger locations than now meant it wasn't a viable option. I looked at an iX3 but the interior of the I-PACE is a nicer place, especially with the full leather upgrade and also the iX3 is much slower and doesn't look as nice to me. BMW residuals are also horrific which is a shame as they drive really nicely. I've have a few BMWs, an Alfa and a Porsche so have always wanted to try a Jag. I don't like the look of the Merc EQC and the lead times are very long as well as their finance deals being much more expensive. The Polestar 2 was the car that almost changed my mind but I cant find one close enough to test drive and the space would of course be much smaller. With a 4 year old and a new baby on the way the extra space would be useful and I wasn't too keen on the vegan interior of the Polestar which I've heard marks quite easily and £5k for leather is more than BMW charged me for a full 'Individual' leather interior on a 540i Touring which is a crazy price. I really hope more options don't become unavailable though as I would have loved the 360 camera but I can live without the gesture tailgate.

Only downside I read and hear is a lack of charging stations, up to 8hrs charge if this is correct, til more charging stations became available, even at your place of work, to charge whilst working, person's living in flats, on road parking with no option to charge from a charger fitted to their home's is a issue to resolve to the future of electric or (your local city jag dealership would collect your ev from your home, to take it to the dealership with a charge station at their dealership, for you.. to charge it for 8hrs, and then return it to you once charged up) with a build of lower charging time's, also, but I love it, and the best styling of a electric car, I've seen at present

I tried to test drive an iPace when they first arrived at the local dealer, totally clueless sales people, apathy seemed to be their best trait. I arrived to pick the car up to drive about 50 miles to Malton North Yorkshire, the car wasn't even charged for me !. They didn't know how to operate their on-site fast charger then tried to sell me a diesel Jag !. These dinosaurs need to die, the sooner the better. We contract purchased a Range Rover P400e in the end, didn't go anywhere near Land Rover or Jaguar (same Indian owners) and got the car for a projected £10k less by leasing online avoiding the dealerships was a win and when they come out with a 350 mile real range iPace we will probably lease that too, but not via Jaguar !

I bought my I-pace a couple months ago and I absolutely never thought I'd love a car as much as I do. I believe the term 'best' is not substantiated by the specs but rather by the overall way the car handles, drives and it's features. This thing is wicked-fast and it handles FAR beyond what a vehicle of this size/weight should....it's almost like magic. I think I"m faster through the canyon with this I-pace then compared to my Ferrari. The regen braking, instant torque and ease of operation makes it faster....not by specs but simply by virtue of how it performs. I've driven the (slightly faster) Tesla S and while it is a tad quicker, it doesn't come anywhere near the handling of the I-pace. I'm relentlessly delighted with this I-pace!

This is typical from a fuel vehicle manufacturer. They are stuck in their old ways, like how much unneeded weight they have. You can not use fuel vehicle design and get an efficient electric vehicle. They need to be designed with this in mind from the ground up. Sadly no major manufactures are doing this, unlike Tesla who started electric.

The Tesla Model Y is more or less what I am looking for in a car but we are all going to have to wait to see how it compares to this I-Pace. The price point of the Model Y is a lot better than the I-Pace and if one wants the sport version then the prices points are close to the same but then the performance isn't as the Model Y boast far better numbers than this I-Pace. Once one gets acclimated to the Tesla minimal interior design all of those buttons really aren't missed at all as one can just drive and have fun and not have to worry about some button failing at some point in time in the future. I love the way it looks but the Model Y also looks very good and it give far more range and up to 7 seats and a really usable frunk than that joke of a frunk the I-Pace gives. All in all I actually feel sorry for Jaguar as it seems like it was planned to take on Tesla's Model X not knowing Tesla would be coming out with the Model Y and it can't beat the Model Y on paper thus far and Jaguar looks like they really tried hard to compete in that market but ultimately failed. Basically all the other car manufacturers allowed Tesla to get out too far ahead of them and now they are paying the price for their lack of vision.

I agree. Efficiency is going to be a big deal as EVs come on the market, and most comparisons of the IPace and the Teslas fails to mention that the Tesla is way ahead. I like the IPace, but holding the price down, giving it more range, and increasing efficiency has to be their priority going forward - or they will fail to sell enough cars to flourish in any way.

Yep the quoted residuals at the time were way off - which is GREAT! 😊 I'm looking at a 3 year old 2021 model with the gremlins improved and still a good range compared to the competition. EVs are evolving but I don't see this being obsolete in the next few years so I think at around £25-30k it's a good way to get a nice eV for not much money and in 4 years time hopefully range and weight will have been addressed!

When I test drove an I-Pace, I found the 360 camera system stopped working when I slowly drove forward or backwards. This makes the system useless for curb parking or tight parking spaces. Test driving the E-Tron the 360 camera works until at least 5 mph. Videos of the EQC also mirror the E-Tron. Tesla of course offers no 360 camera system at all for parking!

The Tesla can park itself and continuously adds features and performance the longer you own it. Being locked to updates only when trading in is an obsolete business model that assures the old companies will not longer exist in 3 years. Sales figures for the I-Pace have been dismal and not enough to support the continued production without a complete redesign. Too little too late...bye-bye Jaguar. I owned 2 Jags over the years and my GF got one for her birthday: E-Type 3.8, an XJ-S 12 cyl and I got an XJ-6 for my GF. They all were nice to drive, had adequate performance but the only one made well and was reliable was the E-Type. There is no indication they have gotten better in reliability or service after becoming an Indian company. Car buyers have spoken with their cash, the old dealer centric, model year based business model is dying and updates are expected over the air instead of waiting for a recall or trade-in time every few years. Buyers are not buying ICE cars, they see the future and would rather save longer than commit to an ICE car that has a resale value that drops in 1/2 every 6 months now. Dealers are stuck with the largest unsold inventory since 2008. The customers get it much better than management of the ICE legacy companies that have mountains of debt just from their existing products so are very reluctant to invest even more reinventing their companies. The current CEOs and upper management are not the inventive types, they were caretakers of the legacy brands. The only company that might survive in Europe is possibly VW. Tesla and Rivian in the US and a dozen or so Chinese brands. No Japanese brands and maybe Kia in Korea. That is it, but Tesla will be the Apple of transportation because they are the only ones who see the big picture and have no legacy system to maintain. Too bad, Jag used to mean something. I would still prefer that old XK-E 3.8 to anything made in Europe. For the price of a 4 door sedan, the E-Type was the most advanced mass-produced car in the world at the time. No one has had the vision since to break the molds. The i-Pace is a lackluster me-too car that will die along with all the other legacy company's efforts. No innovation, no vision.

In 3 years those cars will not be worth 57%. of cost because in 3 years that battery will be considered obsolete. They will only sell 50 thousand a year hardly enough to justify charging stations like Tesla does. Very disappointing to learn they bury the batteries in a landfill you would think they could reuse lithium forever its a frickin element.

I really don't understand the constant nonsensical comparisons people keep making between Tesla and legacy ICE manufacturers, like Jaguar. Its an apples and oranges, false equivalency. Tesla has been specifically making electric cars for what 16 years now and this is Jaguars first electric car. Their first. People seem to conviently forget that the current technology, Tesla uses in their cars, has had all that time to build upon. For a company that's using technology from its Formula E program (which the I-Pace's drivetrain was initially based on), to concept, to an actual production car, Jaguar has had what 4-5 years. To create this, their first electric car in that amount of time, is pretty impress.

You have got to understand what is happening here. Having proven his genius at making buckets of money, Elon Musk has set himself a target to save the human race by colonising mars. So being a realist, he worked out that he would need a train load of money and some magical technology to do this. So he designed rockets to get there, EVs to run around and tunnelling equipment to create underground habitats and highways and made the money needed at the same time. Pure genius!

@@slartybartfarst9737 In a year filled with bad news for Jaguar Land Rover - Brexit, slumping sales in China, diesel woes in Europe and financial losses - comes word that Jaguar's best-selling vehicle, the F-Pace crossover, landed at the top of Consumer Reports' list of least reliable vehicles. Most of the problems F-Pace owners cited in a survey were related to the vehicle's infotainment software or noises and leaks, not mechanical breakdowns, said Jake Fisher, the magazine's director of auto testing. Still, the results are in keeping with a nagging problem for Jaguar: The brand rarely has been a leader in quality and reliability.

Although this review has not yet mentioned it, the major issues with this and all EV's have are range and availability of charging points. I for one could not have an EV. How many people have off road space for a home charging? Not many. As he said the range given is "optimistic". Say you could get 200 out if it, 100 miles and you'd need a charging point at the destination, plus time to recharge. With fuel saving technology my petrol family car get 550 miles from a 50 litre tank (it would do another 100 including a reserve tank) and if I am low it's a 10 minute job to give me another 550 miles. EV's are manageable for short journeys only and if you have home charging. EV's will take over, but not until range and charging point catch up. This is some time ahead.

Tesla’s pricing? You mean really high, and in the case of the Model 3, nowhere near what Saint Elon claimed. Battery Tech? It’s better, but not by a huge degree, and rivals are improving/catching up all of the time. Charging network? You got me there. Tesla nailed it in the charging network arena, although they fail in the customer service department. Auto driving? It doesn’t work. It’s not available, i.e. you can’t use it as it’s not legal. Auto pilot works well, just like it works in my wife’s Volvo XC 40 and my daughters Buick. This is coming from someone who owns a Model 3 Performance. The Jag is a great car, as in I’ve drove it and it’s amazing, and if I was in the market for a Model X, I would probably get the jag. As for the charging, I have an adapter I got from eBay that lets me charge at Tesla stations, and I have a Level 2 at home, so it’s not that big of a deal for me. For others who aren’t as fortunate, I can understand that being an issue.

Oh dear- just a teensy bit slanted would you say? My Tesla S85D is now four years from new except many features have been uploaded to my car when parked so it has been improved free of charge, with no visits to dealership and no time required, no hassle with loan vehicle etc- so my car becomes a newer car many times every year. Tesla seems well on the way with recharging that is mentioned here as a necessity. I could go on with more 'slanty' bits but my advice if you are considering EV is to check with a Tesla EV owner locally. You will find that features being quoted as something entirely new have been with the Tesla S for years. Regenerative braking for instance. Air suspension and ride height adjustable on my S. This video is a sales pitch rather than a review. A significant difference between Jaguar and Tesla is in the interior. Tesla goes for simplicity, Jaguar for tradition. Tesla resembles modern executive aircraft cockpit practice and that is no bad thing at all. Tesla by the way, is currently talking to my local internet provider as they have identified a deficiency which the provider should be addressing. Tesla can check car system over internet as a matter of course. After 60+ years of relations with factory/dealer set-ups, I much prefer what I am getting at the moment from Tesla. Good to have new entrants into EV manufacture though, best way to see progress to benefit customers. A bit of a cheer for Tesla, for their leadership, innovation, sentry mode, charging network, astounding speed of development etc., would not go amiss. Without them Big Oil and ICE would be dictating to customers as long as Governments allow.

A bit OTT. "The Coventry makers?" - but made in Austria. I am sure it's an excellent vehicle, it should be at this price. It's a big piece of machinery, and its obvious rivals are Audi and Mercedes. But there's a hungry rival out there, called Tesla. This is a company able to design and build a car for batteries from scratch, and has a ten year lead on these long established companies. Why on earth did Jaguar build an SUV? I can't help thinking this is not the place for Jaguar to be. An aerodynamic sports saloon and estate version would have been much more in keeping with Jaguar tradition, and a much more efficient in use of energy, with much longer range likely. I think all these established motor vehicle companies are going to face some severe problems if they don't meet Tesla head on.

I live in Vancouver, Canada and there seems to be a big price gap in the EV market. The Jag is very nice , but well over $100k in Canadian dollars. The only mid priced EV is the Model 3 Tesla at around $60k. So pricing for Jag is a high, The Chevy Bolt, Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius fall under the $50k price point. It will be interesting to see what Volvo and other manufacturers come out with later this year and through into 2025. It is really such an open market still with new car sales for EV, well under 5% or so of the total new car sales overall. Love to see an I-Pace type vehicle for $50K.

The presenter appears to ignore the issues on performance compared to the competition, now I love Jaguar cars I’ve owned two XKR, but Jaguar are behind the curve already. The guy needs to test drive other EV cars and actually understand the technology.

A good first try but leagues behind Tesla. Autopilot, over the air updates, safety, efficiency, sentry mode, dog mode, huge charging infrastructure etc make tesla the clear winner

Regen braking, whilst attractive as it seems to convert wasted energy into electricity for the battery, is nevertheless an inefficient way to drive if you want maximum range. Any braking, including Regen braking, requires more energy than saved, to regain the speed. Simple physics. So Max Range is achieved by switching it off. And can I just say, heated seats have absolutely zero effect on range, whether they are on or off. Absolutely zero. That little gripe aside, what a useful review. I really enjoyed it.

Really? So is Regen fake?
@iainmackie7064
@iainmackie7064 4 жыл бұрын
doThatGWalk Is it fake? Of course not. It absolutely works. That is NOT what I said. What I am saying is the energy it saves is less than the energy required to get back up to the original speed again. Simple physics. The most efficient way of driving is to coast, not brake (manually or via Regen) then have to accelerate back up again. Obviously if you are going down a hill, or are HAVING to stop, at say traffic lights, then Regen works great. But going from A to B, having Regen On means every time you lift off the accelerator the car will brake. So all I am saying is there is more than one way to skin this cat. Driving using Regen is arguably easier. Driving without Regen is arguably more efficient. Personal choice as always.

@@iainmackie7064 so driving with Regen off is more efficient? I heard the Regen helps certain people Regen the brake mode like on Chevy Bolt. I heard driver's can get 300miles instead of the 250 advertised.

doThatGWalk I have found I definitely get better range with Regen Off. I’m not sure it would make such a difference as 300 miles instead of 250 and it would vary depending on the car, particularly the weight. But in winter I would certainly put Regen onto Low to offset some of the normal losses due to temperature drop. But it is also true that good Regen makes driving a bit easier, more like 1 pedal driving. If someone doesn’t need the efficiency, then having a Regen On makes a lot of sense.

I like the car... just my fuel car has got all of those attachments inside the car...and it can flip up the accelerator peddle and allow it to be pulled down on the left side of the peddles for I am disabled and need this adaption in a car... Just with you saying feet off the peddles sounds up my street
