Classic Obsession - Gary Mavers

Classic Obsession - Gary Mavers

26 күн бұрын

It’s time to tackle some unpleasant jobs that Gary’s being putting off - namely replacing the track rod ends and brake pads on the Jaguar XJS, getting to the bottom of why the Rolls-Royce Corniche’s air con isn’t working and last but not least replacing a broken spring on the BMW E46.

I really appreciate these "catchup" episodes as in life it's not always about working on your classics but your dailys too. All vehicles need work constantly and Gary always makes the work look so easy. I was surprised that Gary did all that work to the interior of the XJS without finding out where the leak was coming from??? 🤔🤔🤔Would hate to go out to that car a week from now and the interior is all soaked again. 😡😡😡

I was thinking the same thing. My guess it that he definitely fixed it first, hope he shares the results. If it's anything similar to the xj6 issues of that era, I'm thinking the windshield gasket.

BMW passed on the "snapping spring syndrome" on to Rover for the 75 in the late 90s. The XJ-S is like one of those old ladies you have to visit and she'll grab you and tell you all about her ailments and issues and find lots of jobs around the house and garden for you to do and you won't even get fed before you have to try and make your escape before she starts repeating herself.........

Good watch. I did my apprenticeship at the company that made the rear axles for the XJS. I spent sometime in the test department and we had an XJS development hack, a 5.3 HE. The rear sub frame used to get dropped out complete to do any real brake or axle work. The techs were pretty slick at it. Mildly surprised you only changed one spring on the BMW. As always a good watch and strangely therapeutic

Another good video Gary. If you end up keeping the E46 long enough, you will have to replace the front drop-links at some point. Just to let you know that Mahle make an aftermarket replacement that is much better and stronger than the original and is still cheaper than a BMW part. I think they call it the "HD" for heavy duty. I have recently fitted a pair on mine and they are the dogs. I have also had the aircon gas leak where the UV dye does not show anything. It is always worth a new condenser for the peace of mind, that's what was wrong in my case, it had a minute leak in one corner that was completely unable to be seen with it in situ. Look forward to the next one.

Hi Gary, A first time comment……I discovered your channel a few months ago and I honestly love every episode . Your attitude and methodical approach is great to watch. I lost my old man last year, and it’s because of him that I have a love for cars and all the oily bits. I would help him as a young boy, but we invariably had the wrong size tools or missing bits and pieces. Changing the subframe on a 1964 mini, outside in the west of Scotland rain wasn’t my favourite experience I can tell you. Anyway I wanted to write this and say how much I enjoy these videos. The cars are a joy to see also. Many thanks ,..John.

Your phrase "A bucket full of Legionnaire's Disease" must be just about the MOST DESCRIPTIVE thing I've heard for years! I'm just wondering HOW all the water/moisture got in?? I'd be putting my money on a screen or door seal. I once used a wet vac on the carpet, settee and armchair in a cabin on a ship I used to sail on. We always carried coal or iron ore, so lots of orange or black dust got inside. I "got stuck in", wet-vacced it then pulled the muck out the carpet. HOLY MOLEY!! Like yours, it was orangey-black, but there was about 1/2 inch of sludge at the bottom of the tank.....which I filled no less than 4 times (carpet) and 3 times (settee and armchair). Afterwards, the carpet felt much better to walk on and was about 5 shades lighter in colour. The furniture felt much better to sit on too! Great video, very informative.

Evaporators common on the XJS...not usually the condenser but possible.. Also those hoses ( if original) are not bonded to retain R134 refrigerant ( post 93) ...inject uv dye with the recharge..if it goes again inpect the rubber hoses with a uv lamp..its likely you'll see spotting.

I own a '94 Merc W124 500E that has a passion for breaking front (500lb/in) springs and it is nothing to do with the quality of the springs but the design of the spring pan and the fact that Merc decided to form a helterskelter shape in the lower wishbone to house the spring that is merely cut off the coil rather than having a proper pigs ear with a ground and flattened end. The result is that stones get caught in the pan at one particular point, create a stress riser in the spring and because of the design all the stress in the spring is concentrated initially at that stress point and the spring snaps. My solution is to create a flat spring pan and get some new springs coiled up with a pigs ear and then ground flat.
@classic.obsession
@classic.obsession 24 күн бұрын
You know, the other front spring had also snapped in the time it’s been sitting up?! So dangerous. Imagine doing top speed on a motorway and this happens. It’s probably the cause of many deaths. Regards.
@clivewilliams3661
@clivewilliams3661 24 күн бұрын
@@classic.obsession I am not a BMW man so I did not realise that the front spring was so short. As you know a coil spring provides its springing by bending the steel rod so that the shorter the spring working over a longer distance, the greater the relative defection and thus the greater the strain, so looking at those springs it comes as no surprise that they break. Also, the spring pan is one of those complex shapes that permits the used of simple cut coils that generate huge initial forces close to the end. Looking at the failure, it appears to be the result of shear force overload , which shouldn't happen if the design is correct. If this was my car I would be looking at the options. (coil overs come to mind)

Why not re-gas the system with some UV dye in it and then use a black light to find the leak? Or, re-gas it and use a freon sniffer to check for leaks. This is especially effective if the evaporator is leaking because you can detect the freon coming out of the vents inside the car. Replacing components until you finally find the bad one is not the best way to go, IMO.

The mercedes specialist ive used said he could see the gas leaking from the air conditioning, abd even had some kind of sniffer l, which could smell it leaking. Perhaps you could find out ehat tools they use.

I think in this case it may be the compressor. When I switch to a/c the clutch doesn’t click in and engage. That’s probably where the gas is leaking from. I’ll inspect the condenser when I replace the oil cooler. Regards.

Oil leaks and XJS's are common. In your case it's probably either a hose to the oil cooler, or the cooler itself. as a teenager I rebuilt a 1977 Les Mans edition XJS from the ground up. Getting the oil cooler to fit took half a day of sweat, bruises, hammers, swearing and all manner of strife and awfulness until I realised that the pins that locate it are slightly offset, and if I just flipped it around it would drop right in. You probably know this, but if not, don't be an idiot like me.

@@klwthe3rd No idea, sorry. It seemed pretty much like any other XJS really. one of my dads customers jad it stripped to the shell and re-painted. complete restoration job. my dad just picked me up one morning while I was an unemployed teenager and dragged me to his workshop and pointed at a pile of rubble and said "that's a car. build it". The only thing I remember that was different was the glass on the doors and the plate in the door frames has "Les Mans 77" embossed in them.

Hi Gary The dampness in the front of the car looks suspiciously like the condensate drain from the a/c evaporator might be blocked. I would try and locate the drain line and blow it through. If it is that, it's a quick fix. I've had this problem on a couple of cars in the past. Good luck.

I was going to say the same. The ac drain pipes are one or both sides of the gearbox if I recall. My 94 XJS lines were blocked and it soaked the footwells. Also the windscreens can leak in the bottom corners and it’s a known rust trap under the seals. It can look fine from the outside but underneath holes can open up.

Also the lower section of the spring will work harder, taking up road vibrations and shocks repeatedly before the rest of the spring compresses and relaxes. The geometry / shape of the spring allows for this ‘progressive’ action…..

Gary where was the water coming in from ?
@classic.obsession
@classic.obsession 18 күн бұрын
Hi. Don’t know. The previous owners explained the car went in for a glass out, bare metal respirator 30 years ago and when it came back, it took in water and the A/C no longer worked. Because of this the car was never driven in the rain again. The first thing I did on acquiring the car was to clean out the water drains in the roof above the windscreen with a wire. This is favourite especially after a car is buzzed off or paint stripped. There was a lot of debris in there. Since drying the car out I’ve driven it many times and even left it for a few days in heavy rain to see and no water ingress whatsoever. I’m confident it’s solved the problem. Regards

@classic.obsession im having issues with another one of my XJS. The XJ-S I'm having issues with is my 1988 XJ-S with 50k miles (US SPEC). This car has been butchered over the years of having bad mechanics. I have replaced the smog pipes(they have been broken a plugged up), reinstalled the missing heater contol valve, flushed the cooling system, replaced all coolant and heater hoses, replaced thermostats, replaced the distributor cap ( the vacuum line on top has the connection broken off), replaced an air injection solenoid valve, replaced AAV. (All parts were purchased from sng barratt, moss motors or jaguar heaven)The symptom it is giving me is a lean condition like the AAV is bad where it revs high when cold and idle races when it warms up. I replaced the AAV twice with a new aav from sng barratt, and when I disconnected the hose from the air intake manifold, the car ran fine. I disconnected the TPS to see what it would do, and it just reved high and didn't idle surge. I have videos i could attach in an ema. My goal was to get this car back on the road before the summer. I would like to be able to show off this car at a local cars and coffee coming up in a few weeks along with my three other Jags. Can you help me diagnose this issue and get this Jag back on the road?

I think it was due to the really cold spell we had in the winter. I remember the scuttle panel froze up badly with ice. It was always a dry car before that with no problems. I like to use cars all year round but was experiencing glass steaming up and was shocked when I lifted the carpets. I think once cars have water inside it stays until you do what I did. Been a few weeks now and despite a lot of rain it’s still bone dry. Regards
