Jaguar XK8 97-01 Starter and battery replacement.

Hello everyone. Today I replace the starter and battery on my 2001 Jaguar XK8 Convertible. First time replacing this ever. It was… to say the least… something. The absolute poor engineering on the replacement of this is mind blowing. I’ve seen plenty of poor engineered parts on vehicles over the years, every manufacturer has them, but this is just brain dead lol. The DIY’r can do this at home, just follow the way I do it as per service data and you will accomplish your task. So I hope you enjoy this journey WE take together. Thank you all.

Thanks. I just did my 2001 XKR starter and this video helped a bunch. That upper bolt is a tough one and that ‘half moon’ or ‘obstruction’ wrench really helped. A couple tips would be: 1) Make sure you drop that steering rack as low as you can and then forward. Rotating the tires to ‘toe out’ position really helps. 2) Make sure you ‘chase the threads’ on that upper bolt hole to help the bolt spin back in more easily. As far as saying it’s bad engineering? That’s easier said than done. That engine fits in multiple vehicles and the XK series is a tight fit. Plus in reality you will only have to replace the starter once in the vehicles life. My original starter went out at 164K miles. Great video!

Are there any other top batteries you'd consider for QPR - quality for price ratio? for your & my treasured XK8 2001/2?

I do like Bosch very much. Varta is also a great battery. For lower cost alternatives there is Interstate, Exide.. for Big box Auto part stores Auto zone Gold is a well built battery as well.

@@themechanic2.060 I rang YAUSA in Reading/PHL, PA today & they will soon be selling to distributors (Battery Warehouse, Batteries & Bulbs) for their 5000, 7000 & 9000 series (good, better & best categories) that I've heard about via To The Garage's host. I need a battery rather quickly - so I will check out Bosch (any suggestions for best vendors??), Varta, & AutoZone Gold that I have had good luck with for my Porsche. Thanks for your feedback & well done videos on how to work on one's motorcar oneself correctly!

If you remove the oil filter and the alternator cooling ducts the starter top bolt is easy to access with a ratchet and extensions. Don't drop the rack.

Unfortunately the only successful way to do this job is exactly how I showed you. There is no other route…. even removing the oil filter won’t speed this up and the rack has to be dropped for access. Thanks for your comment! Hope you’re subscribed!

I did it without removing the oil filter, just the alternator duct. I used a non ratcheting box end 13mm on the top bolt to break it lose since it had more room to swing, then a 13mm ratcheting wrench to take it out. I then put the starter back in with the top bolt in the mounting ear held in place with tape then tightened it back up with a 13mm ratching wrench. it does take some fiddling around with the starter to get it into position.
