Video 125 The video compares various types of LED bulbs against the normal incandescent bulbs used on the main instrument clusters of our Jaguar XK8 X100. We reviewed the fitment, sizes and types of bulb required. Special thanks to Phil Preece for starting this LED bulb project and James Lucas for sharing his red LED interior complete with illuminating Jaguar logo sill covers.

@@ODRModurol Did you get the ticket for the XK8 yesterday Damian? Talking of jobs, I’ve just spent every evening after work for the last week attending to some bubbling rust on the rear wheel arch of my x308. Really pleased with the final result. It’s quartz grey and the paint match is excellent despite the fact that it was done using rattle cans. Only downside is that the rear bumper bracket did the usual trick where the ally receiver turns to dust as you attempt to bolt the assembly back together. New (used) part on order ready to be smothered in copious quantities of copper grease at assembly. Like you say, always something to do!

Gerard, yes I it passed its MOT with an advisory. Was a bit disappointed but will get it sorted. Only attempted paint work on the sills or lower as not very good at it. Hope you have more skill than me. Thanks for the comment regards Damian

Thanks for the extended detail. I keep coming back to rewatch. I need to change some burnt out bulbs and, while I”m in there, have to decide which ones to keep standard, which ones to upgrade to brighter incandescent, and which ones to upgrade to LED. The choices out there have become endless. And the prices seem to have skyrocketed in the last few years.

Tom, another fellow enthusiast actually used white bulbs together with small resistors to dim the light slightly. I think this is possibly the best idea although much more fiddley to sort out. Prices for everything are going crazy, regards Damian

Udo, thanks for the comment. Colours are a very personal choice. Everyone has different preferences. I was looking for the whole dash to match. Will be finding out what I can change in the centre console to modify its illumination colour. More to come, regards Damian

I agree blue looks better than green despite being a cooler colour which contrasts with the warm cozy colour pallet of the cabin interior. Brilliant tutorial as usual Damian - much appreciated! I'm holding out to see whether you are able to change the centre console lighting - pending your findings will determine whether I stay with the factory lighting or go with the contemporary cool blue. Thanks again 👍

Jonathan, I’m interested to see what bulbs in centre console can be relatively easily changed too. Thanks for the encouragement. Had the MOT this week so not much time to start it but will be doing the work soon. Thanks for the comment regards Damian

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD A BATTERY BE DISCONNECTED WHILST THE IGNITION CIRCUIT IS LIVE, AS PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MAY OCCUR.

Sorry to repeat this question from another console light video: Is the switchgear on the steering wheel supposed to be illuminated? Cruise control, radio column, wiper stalk? If so, how do you change out those bulbs.

A very interesting video. It is a shame the LED's change the colour slightly. I like the idea of changing to brighter LED's but I want to keep the colour as close to stock as possible. Cheers John.

John, I like the idea of changing to LED too but there are problems. They are either not bright enough and the light is patchy or too bright and not a patchy. Overall happy but will do a follow up once we had them on for a while. Green is easier to coordinate but not sure yet about what is easy to change in the centre console. You can change some but not all the back light easily. I have recently followed your vent repair video and will be referring to it in our video. We were not as completely successful as you, as we broke the vent clips off. Love you videos and thanks very much for the comment regards Damian

I assume that you used ‘cool white’ LEDs for the test Damian. Obviously, the gels in the illuminated sections of the display have been calibrated for tungsten bulbs. I therefore wonder if ‘warm white’ LEDs would maintain the original colour balance but add brightness?

Gerard, not 100% sure to be honest could be worth a try. The bulbs with mainly LEDs wash out the instruments, the ones with less LEDs gave uneven light across the instruments due to less than optimum positioning of the LEDs. The one thing about ordinary bulbs is the even distribution of light all around. Quite a bit more too this LED thing than first appears. Thanks for the comment regards Damian

Damian, great video. I call the T10 and T5 lamp socket (holders) wedge type, and the BA9S lamp a bayonet type. Is it different in Britain?

I am really happy with the way mine turned out with the white. I like the different colors displayed in the 3 main instruments. The green looks too, too, uh 1960s Mercury Comet or something. Reminds me of my dad's car. Your 25 minute video probably takes you 10+ hours to do. Thank you ever so much for what you do Damian.

Mark, correct I think there are lots of reference numbers of the same bulb depending on the country. I like the white look too especially in the daylight. However the white LED turn them blue for some reason. The green work OK but make the dials green even in the daylight. I miss the white look. The LED might be a bit too powerful. Also the dimming function doesn’t really work. I will live then for the moment. Thanks for your comment and support much appreciated regards Damian

Hi Damian. I replaced the halogen lamps with LEDs on my speedometer, everything works fine, apart from the low beam light, it no longer comes on, but the headlights work. What may have happened?

L’Ombra della Luce. if the new bulb hasn't work to could be either wrong polarity or a faulty bulb. Best practice to test each bulb and note the positive terminal on the bulb. Hope that helps, regards Damian

All that red would drive me nuts, even though it's probably the best choice for long night drives, it's common in aircraft. I WANT TO KNOW HOW HE DID THE SILL PLATES!!!! I just had to pull up my sills because I'm painting the car so I'm in the market for something original like that.

Andork, red is a strong for me too but I think really suits a black car and interior. I want to know more about the sills as well. It’s James project and he’s not quite finished the refurb on his car. He hopes to finish the work on the car this year. Fingers crossed we will be able to see it complete shortly. Thanks for the comment regards Damian

Hi, what did you use for the non-LED original bulbs (T5)? I found Sylvania 74, which is 1.4W. can you help me find non-LED bulbs? Thanks!
@ODRModurol
@ODRModurol 2 жыл бұрын
Jin, I will help if I can. What do you want to know? Which bulb and where? If you looking for non-LED instrument panel bulbs other Jaguar owners have used Sylvania 194's (14v, 3.8Watt). Brighter than the 74 (1.4W) but not as bright as some bulbs with 5watts. I haven't gone this route personally but that what I have found. OEM bulbs with holders can be found with part number LJA4390BA but they are circa £5.36ea. Hope that helps. If you need anymore information please let us know, regards Damian

Since I added these to my XK8 they are on whenever the ignition is turned on and headlights are not working. Is this a coincidence?

@cormaco6324, this is quite normal. The bulbs are constantly lit and dimmed when the headlights are on. When you change to LED you notice this effect more as you can see the light in the daytime. Hope that answers your question, regards Damian

Hello, I followed your instructions and disconnected the battery then took out the dash and swapped the bulbs with LED. I checked to make sure the polarity was correct. Now my dash won't do anything like its not getting any power to the entire dash cluster. I can't imagine I blew a fuse so can you give me some suggestions. My car has a yellow plug to the board on the right and a black plug on the left (which No one seems to mention tbe black plug on the other side.) Suggestions? Do you know which fuse controls the instrument cluster? Btw. By radio and Center console doesn't light up either but it never did when I bought it.

@@ODRModurol Hello Damin, The instrument cluster is fixed!!! But the problem wasn't the fuse but the black plug that plugs into the instrument cluster (left side at least for U.S. left hand drive cars) wasn't pushed in all the way. It was a matter of pushing it in far enough the teeth on the gears that clamp the plug onto the board were damaged and caused the plug not to slide down correctly. I took an Xacto knife and trimmed off the frayed plastic edges and the plug went in with ease and my new LED instrument cluster lit up like Christmas! I posted pics on the fan page where you responded to me. If you do an update as a cautionary tale please tell people to move the locking bar all the way to the other side before removing the plug AND when plugging it back on the locking mechanism should move freely to lock the plug in. If you have to force the bar to shot you're just grinding down the locking gears and the gauge isn't plugged in securely.
