Thanks Sam. As a DIY mechanic for many years in the UK and an XK8 owner myself it was very interesting to observe your thniking process....very much like my own. Thanks again

A useful and informative video for someone like me that's daunted looking under the hood. I have a duff coil so might as well change all my plugs at same time.

Do not use oil on the spark plugs when installing them. The torque values are dry fit, and lubricating them will overtorque them by 25% or more. NGK says that you don't \have to use anti-seize on their plugs. Look it up on their web site. Otherwise, good video.

Note: Don't be surprised (I was) if the rubber boot at the bottom of the coil pack remains with the spark plug when the coil pack is removed. I had to use considerable force to remove the coil packs. not simply a lift out procedure as this video would have you believe, and the boot adhering to the Spark Plug was the reason. Removal of the recalcitrant rubber boots was accomplished with a long nosed pliers with non-aggressive jaw surfaces.

Sam a good tip for putting plugs into a modern alloy head is use a length of rubber pipe that fits over the ceramic end of the plug and use it to hold the plug and start the thread. It cant grip tightly enough to turn the plug into a misthread but makes it easy to get the plug in.

Thank you, I have an XKR, but your video was still informative. Had to laugh at your comment about embarrassing yourself, truth be told I do that all the time. I am guessing your are amongst good company. Thanks for all the tips.

I would never, never use oil to lubricate plug threads, it gets super hot and carbonizes and can foul the new plugs. Use permatex anti seize thread compound instead. I use it on my wheel bolt threads too.

You should never use anti-seize on wheel nuts/bolts. Its affects the torque of the wheels and can create loose nuts and stretched studs.

Spark plug torque settings are for clean and DRY threads! If you oil the threads you WILL overtighten the plugs. Very bad.

I'm having a problem with the right hand side of the engines spark plugs. I can't get one of the ignition coils out! Not that it's stuck, it's just blocked by the strut tower, when I try to get it out it hits the strut tower and no matter how I position it I can't get it out ! Has anyone had the same problem? Unfortunately in this video he only does the left side and the video stops just before he removes the right bank coils..

What year is your car? And is there a difference between the XK8 and the XKR when changing spark plugs?

Exactly what tool (socket+extender?) are you using here? Magnetic? Never seen one with a rubber lining inside. I need to get one whatever it is so I can get this job done on my XJ8. I have everything else needed.

It's just a spark plug socket. You can buy them at any auto parts store for just a few dollars. It's very handy because it grips the plug to make it easy to remove and reinstall. It's not magnetic. The rubber lining in the socket holds the spark plug.

Any suggestions on how to tell which coil is bad when its only missing and not completely fouled? I only have a small miss... Thanks.

wwwDrHeadlightcom With the engine running, unplug the coil packs one by one. If the idle changes for a second before smoothing out again (compensation), then the coil pack is good. If, when you unplug the coil pack the idle DOES NOT change, then thats your bad coil pack. (Cylinder cut out test)
